Every so often, Henry does some amazing statistical work. We're always happy to pass it along. Great job, Henry!
I meant to write up some of these during the offseason.
But I
traveled a lot and was unable to come up with anything. Just a few
days ago, a good friend sent me two different college hoops preview
mags. I am still furiously trying to memorize names and umbers.
During this lull before ACC play, I hope to compose some good ones.
Today's analysis deals with current coaches and comparative
winnings. I have entered into a table relevant stats on wins for all
coaches in the top 9 major conferences: ACC, PAC-10, Big-10, SEC, Big-
12, Big East, ConfUSA, Mountain West, and A-10. I also included
other better known, veteran, or up and coming coaches from the
remaining conferences. Altogether, I believe I have included all or
most coaches of consequence and those relevant to the compiled lists.
About the numbers. These figures include up to the 1999-2000 season
only. Though not explicitly stated in my source, I gather that these
wins include those dating from times when some of these coaches were
not in Div. I. But I think that is acceptible because Jim Phelan is
always mentioned as the winningest active coach and he was a Div. II
coach until 1989. I have spotted some errors in the source. While I
was able to catch them for the ACC through familiarity, I have no
backup data for the other conferences so caveat emptor.
Then I did a number of analyses. For each, I will list the top 10
and give stats for Coach K if he is not among the top.
1. Career winning percentage.
Coach School Wins Losses % Yrs
Tarkanian Jerry Fresno State 733 180 80.28% 29
Kresse Johnny Charleston 517 127 80.28% 21
Williams Roy Kansas 329 82 80.05% 12
Carmody Bill Northwestern 92 25 78.63% 4
Boeheim Jim Syracuse 575 199 74.29% 24
Majerus Rick Utah 360 125 74.23% 16
Huggings Bob Cincinnati 444 158 73.75% 19
Chaney John Temple 632 225 73.75% 28
Olson Lute Arizona 614 219 73.71% 27
CalipariJohn Memphis 193 71 73.11% 8
#13 Coach K Duke 571 219 72.28% 20
Some of you may have read the Charleston's Kresse has now passed the
Tark for tops in the list of active coaches. I am very glad to hear
that. His is a remarkable feat though much of it has been done in
very weak leagues. Bill Carmody will shoot himself out of the top of
this list after a year. Calipari will too for that matter.
2. Total career wins.

The only unknown for me here is Moreland of Texas Sounthern. I
sincerely hope that Lefty can convincingly beat out Tarkanian.

for years. I had no idea that Penders had been coaching for so long.4. Winning percentage at current school

the entire country. Those rabid dogs calling for his head are
egomaniacal lunatics.5. Most wins at current school.

7 other coaches have put in more time with their current school.7. Total games coached, career.

8. Average number of wins per year, career.

Crum Denny Louisville 23 10
Chaney John Temple 23 8
Olson Lute Arizona 23 8#11 Krzyzewski Mike Duke 23 9
The 9-3 official record hurts Coach K here because that counts as the
number of wins for one year. The same applies to the next set.9. Average number of wins per year at current school.

Richardson Nolan 15 24 10Again, you can see that what Tubby has done at UK is nothing short of
remarkable. Mike Jarvis has done very well with his Johnnies in his
two years. Whether he can continue to churn out those victories
remains to be seen. Now for some more fun stats, the embarrassing ones.

Willard Ralph Holy Cross 154 142 52.03% 10It is possible that I have failed to pick up some coaches with 10 or
more years of experience. But still, having a career winning % of
below .500 bodes ill for Bob Bender. Bender and Skinner are the only
ones from the true power conferences (I am not counting the likes of
the WAC and the A-10) with a losing record.12. Worst winning pecentage at current school (5 or more years there).
Sullivan Frank Harvard 97 138 41.28% 9
Bender Bob Washington 95 104 47.74% 7

Drew Homer Valparaiso 186 169 52.39% 12
Martelli Phil St. Joseph's 81 71 53.29% 5I must warn that of all the lists I have created, this one perhaps
has the most number of potential coaches overlooked.13. Most career losses per year (10 or more years)
Fletcher Marty Denver 16 19
Weltlich Bob South Alabama 11 15

Sullivan Frank Harvard 13 14
Wallace Riley Hawaii 14 14
Willard Ralph Holy Cross 15 14Ralph Willard is one Pitino assistant who has not seen his star
rise. Any way you cut it, Bob Bender is in the hot seat as someone
here has said.
