As time goes on, it seems increasingly clear that the Heather Sue Mercer case
is going to have precisely the opposite effect it was intended to have and will
in fact make it very difficult for other women to kick in college. Latest
woman kicker to chime in is Tonya Butler of Middle Georgia, a junior
college. She says she's willing to sign a contract that she won't sue, but she's
still very skeptical of her chances, and is not happy about the Mercer
case. Mercer had said she would use the money to set up a scholarship fund
for female kickers but that looks increasingly unlikely as football programs are
clearly spooked by the verdict.
