We thought about putting this under Crime Beat, but we're pretty wary of this
story. In the Michigan scandal, eight
have been arraigned now on federal gambling charges.
Michigan may get deeply lucky - Eddie Martin & Son may plea-bargain,
which would mean the NCAA would never see the evidence. However, the IRS might,
and could still file tax evasion charges against the implicated players.
Eddie Martin, aside from his many alleged flaws, has a lack of sense as well:
when he went to buy his Mercedes, he dumped crumpled 50s and 100s on the
salesman's desk. Maybe it's us, but that's just trashy.
It seems pretty clear that something untoward happened between Martin and the
players. We'll be interested to see how much, if anything, gets exposed.
