ACC-SEC Followup

We got several responses to our comments yesterday on the ACC-SEC Final Four
appearances. Henry Hirose sent us the accounting below.  However, Texas
Wolf, who runs www.cardiacpack.com,
says that UVa made the Final Four in '83.  We can't remember so maybe it's
time to dig out some records somewhere to make sure.

A UNC fan sent this:

Gentlemen:  On your ACC/SEC comparison article (12/19) you were in error
on UNC's final four appearances.  You failed to list:  1946, 1972,
1981 & 1982; additionally, your designation of 1983 is wrong.  You guys
run a good site, notwithstanding your intentional or unintentional lapses
concerning Carolina's accomplishments.

He's right about 1983; we meant 1982.  As far as 1942 goes, that's way
before our memory banks, and it's not an ACC appearance, though neither was
Florida State's. Also, several Arkansan forays came from the old Southwest Conference (41, 45, and the fabulous triplets in 78). And State's 50 appearance was also pre-ACC.

Here is the complete list of all Final Fours by current members of the ACC
and the SEC, according to Henry Hirose.

ACC

  • Duke (63, 64, 66, 78, 86, 88,89,90,91,92,94,99)
  • UNC (57, 67, 68, 69, 72, 77, 81, 82, 91, 93, 95, 97, 98)
  • NCSU (50, 74, 83)
  • UVa (81, 84)
  • Georgia Tech (90)
  • Wake Forest (62)
  • FSU (1972, pre-ACC)
  • Clemson-never (Elite 8 in 80)
  • Maryland-never (Elite 8 in 73 and 75)

SEC

  • Kentucky-42, 48, 49, 51, 58, 66, 75, 78, 84, 93, 96-98
  • LSU-53, 81, 86
  • Arkansas-41, 45, 78, 90, 94, 95
  • Mississippi State-96
  • Georgia-83
  • Florida-94
  • Auburn-never (Elite 8 in 86)
  • Vandy-never (Elite 8 in 65)
  • Ole Miss-never (no Elite 8 appearances)
  • South Carolina-never (no Elite 8 appearances)
  • Tennessee-never (no Elite 8 appearances)
  • Alabama-never (no Elite 8 appearances)

It's pretty clear from this list that the ACC outshines the SEC in this
field as well. While the ACC has only 2 out of 9 teams never to reach the
FF, only half of the 12 SEC teams have a FF. Furthermore, all ACC teams
have an Elite 8 appearance but 4 SEC teams don't even have those.
