    D.O.C.

Department of Corrections? What's up, D.O.C?

Sun working in her garden. Spooky music but it's just Jack. He's checking up on her healthe and asks her about the pregnancy. She's OK.

Flashback: Boring Jin and Sun stuff. A woman approaches Sun in the park. She knows about Jin's background and blackmails Sun.

The paratrooper woman starts mumbling in Spanish(?). Hurley seems to understand her, so maybe it is Spanish. She says she's dying. She's hurt badly. They discover a tree branch protruding from her abdomen. Desmond decided to run for Jack. Charlie reminds him where they are and what else is on the island, it's dangerous. Desmond: Nobody knows we're here. Hurley makes like Pippin in the mines of Moria and accidentally fires off a flare. Hurley: Oops.

Flashback: More boring Jin and Sun stuff. Jin has no family pictures.

Sun and Kate talk about Jack. Sun tells her about the pregnancy chat. Sun wonders if Jack is working with The Others. Kate tells Sun what she knows about Juliet, what kind of DOC she is. Sun goes to Juliet. Sun: What happens to pregnant women on this island? Juliet: They die, they all die.

Charlie and Desmond argue until they hear a noise. Mikhail(!?!) appears. I guess he's not dead. Sometimes, even when you see the body, they aren't dead on this island. You sure looked dead to me. I'll never believe you are dead again.

Mikhail runs off. Jin gives chase. They fight. Jin can fight well. He wins.

Desmond grabs Mikhail, "Who are you?" Somehow Charlie knows who he is. He recognizes this guy as the one who shot Sayid. I don't know how he knows that. Maybe he had an offscreen discussion with Sayid. Desmond holds the flare gun to his chest. Mikhail: As your friend pointed out, I already died once this week.

The paratrooper starts mumbling. Phoenetically it sounds like 'Es too moriendo'. Mikhail offers to help. He was a Russian army medic. Mikhail: If I fix her, you must let me walk away as if I never came upon you.

Flashback: Sun goes to see Jin's father, so they have met. Jin's father lied to Jin about his mother. She is alive. She was with many men. Jin's father isn't even sure if he is Jin's father. He tells Sun that she can never tell Jin that she met him or that his mother is still alive.

Juliet wakes Sun in the middle of the night. She tells Sun to come with her. There may be hope for her yet.

Juliet is taking her to The Staff to do an ultrasound. It matters if she conceived on or off the island. They are going to determine the D. O. C., ah, the date of conception.

Flashback: Sun asks her father for $100,000. Sometimes she is her father's daughter. She knows how to work the situation and gets the money. Her father tells her though, that if the money is for her new husband, he will bear the debt. He will be working for the old man now. Ah, so that's the beginning of that particular trouble, Jin is paying for a debt that isn't his and that he didn't know about.

Mikhail saves the paratrooper in a very Pulp Fiction kind of way. Actually, it's more Three Kings but I think you get my point. Hurley lets it slip to Mikhail that she had a satellite phone. The paratrooper says something. It must not be Spanish anymore because Hurley doesn't translate. Mikhail: She said thank you for helping me. Whatever she said in whatever language, that's not it.

Juliet and Sun get to The Staff. Sun wants to know why Juliet is helping her. Juliet used to give patients good news. She told them that they were pregnant and made them happy. Since she came to the island she has lost 9 patients. Juliet wants to give good news again. Sun confesses her affair to Juliet. Sun: It was a mistake. Juliet: We all make mistakes. Yeah, like trusting Benry?

Juliet takes Sun to the hidden room. Why is it hidden. It's where they brought the women to die. Nice. I bet Sun is glad she's there.

Mikhail tells the Campers to keep the wound as clean as they can. She'll be better in a day. A day? It's the island. Desmond lets Mikhail leave. Charlie argues about it. Mikhail leaves. Jin notices the phone is gone and chases him. Desmond tries to stop Jin but Jin gets the phone back, whew! Charlie: You stole this? Mikhail: How could you respect me if I didn't try? Charlie wants a fight. Desmond still lets Mikhail go, he's given his word. Some of that monk training stuck.

Sun tells Juliet that the baby couldn't be Jin's. Juliet explains how the island makes men extra fertile. The men here have way high sperm counts. The men have super high sperm counts and pregnant women all die? Hey, it's Misogynist Island! Sun figures she's going to lose either way.

Flashback: Jin discovers the money in Sun's purse. He doesn't want to be in debt to her father. He can take care of Sun.

Juliet shows Sun her baby on the ultrasound. Sun is very happy. The baby has a strong heartbeat. It's been 90 days since the crash. The baby is at about 8 weeks gestation. Sun got pregnant on the island. Sun starts crying but they are tears of happiness. She wanted the baby to be Jin's.

Flashback: Sun takes the money to the mystery woman. Sun figured out that the woman is Jin's mother. Sun threatens her. She reminds her that she comes from a very powerful family. Sun: My husband thinks that you are dead. Do not force me to make that a reality. I'd listen if I were you, Jin's mom.

Juliet tells Sun that the other women made it to the middle of their second trimester. Sun figures she has 2 months. I figure she makes it to at least Season 5. She tells Juliet she is very happy the baby is Jin's and thanks her. Juliet goes back inside.

Once inside Juliet records a message for Ben. She reports on Sun's ultrasound. She's supposed to find out if Kate is pregnant. After she turns off the machine: I hate you.

Hurley tries to get the phone to work. The paratrooper wakes up. Hurley tells her that they are the survivors of Flight 815. The paratrooper is confused. Flight 815? The one from Sydney? She explains that they can't be the survivors of that plane. Paratrooper: They found the plane. There were no survivors.

    The Brig

Locke sits by a fire, reading a file, the folder is read and the name is blacked out. We hear struggling. Locke: Save your breath. Nobody's gonna hear you. Locke burns the file.

The door is opened and Locke sees his father. Finally we're getting back to Locke's dad. We haven't seen him since the last little bit of The Man from Tallahassee. It was only when I looked up the episode name that I realized Locke's dad is the man from Tallahassee. Oh wow, let's refresh. Locke is standing in the closet holding a gun to Alex's head and Ben tells Richard to go get the man from Tallahassee. So much for the magic box.

OK, back to the scene at hand. Ben tells Locke that he, Locke, brought his father there. We, of course, know otherwise. Locke goes to talk to Dad. Ben warns him not to get too close. Locke takes the gag out of his mouth. Dad bites him. Ben: I warned you, John. Dad: Don't you know, John? Don't you know where we are?

Ben and Locke leave the room. Locke asks what his dad meant. Ben said they don't have time to explain because they are all packing up to leave in the morning. Ben: We are going to a new place, well, an old place actually. Does John want to come? Yes. Ben tells him that he might like to say goodbye to Kate.

Back to now, Kate is with Sawyer in his tent, but she can't sleep. Sawyer offers to walk her home. He's got to pee anyway. Kate: How romantic? She leaves but Sawyer goes out anyway. He sees Hurley and Jin acting suspicious. Sawyer goes to pee and hears a noise. He draws his gun, it's Locke. Locke: Hello, James. Locke has come to get Sawyer. He has inflitrated The Others. He kidnapped Ben and has him tied up. He wants Sawyer to come back with him to kill Ben. Why can't Locke do it himself? Locke: Because I'm not a murderer. Sawyer: Neither am I. Locke: Except for the man you killed in Sydney. Locke has seen Sawyer's file (and burned it). Sawyer says that the facts are wrong. Locke: Then I made a mistake coming to you. Please don't tell anyone you saw me. Sawyer decides to go after all.

The Others all notice Locke. He's famous in a Harry Potter kind of way. Cindy tells him they are all excited he's there. They've been waiting for him. Tom tells Locke that Ben wants to see him.

Locke overhears Juliet's message on the recorder. Ben explains that they plan to go in and take any of the pregnant women. Ben: This is not the first time we've done this, John. Trust me, no one will get hurt. Really? Well, at least I believe you about it not being the first time. Ben can walk now although he needs a cane. He credits John's arrival with helping him get the feeling back. Ben tells Locke that Locke is not ready yet to know everything about the island. Locke disdains the magic box. Ben explains that it's a metaphor. Really? OK, two things Ben says that I believe in this episode, could be a record. Ben tells Locke that Locke won't be free until he releases himself from the hold his father has on him. Has Ben talked to Helen recently?
Ben: When people join us here on this island they need to make a gesture of free will, of commitment. That's why you're gonna have to kill your father.

The Campers are hiding Naomi the Paratrooper in a tent. I know her name is Naomi but I don't remember when she tells them that's her name. Anyway, if they can keep her safe she'll get them off the island. They discuss wheter or not they can trust Jack. Desmond makes a pretty good argument against trusting Jack. Desmond tells Hurley to bring somebody they can trust. Me? I'd go to Sayid.

Sawyer and Locke walk through the jungle. Sawyer is making this trek without shoes. Oh Sawyer, my feet are hurting just watching you. Sawyer asks what is in this file that Locke got to read. Locke is pretty matter-of-fact about Sawyer's parents. He knows that Sawyer's dad shot his mom then turned the gun on himself. He just doesn't know why. Sawyer gets upset and tackles Locke, holding a knife to his throat. He's been conned enough on the island that he's beginning to get suspicious. Why did Locke come and get him? Because Locke can't do it. Sawyer lets Locke up. Sawyer says that they will bring Ben back to their camp because he ain't killin' nobody. Locke: But you'll change your mind. When you hear what he has to say, you'll change your mind.

Sayid is digging something. Hurley walks up: Hey Dude. Sayid says hi and goes back to work. Except Hurley just stands there. Sayid realizes something is up. Sayid is smart one. They listened to me! It was kind of a no-brainer.

Sayid comes to talk to The Campers. He asks if they've told jack about Naomi. Charlie: No. Sayid: Good. Sayid goes in and questions her. Her name is Naomi Dorrit. The heroine of Little Dorrit is named Amy. Her helicopter crashed in the water. She bailed out over the island. She took off from a ship, a freighter, about 80 nautical miles west of here. She's part of a search and recovery team. The wreckage of Flight 815 was found in an ocean trench near Bali. They sent down diving robots. The bodies were all there. So, if they weren't looking for survivors of Flight 815, who were they looking for? Naomi: Him. Desmond.

Naomi: My company was hired by a woman named Penelope Widmore. I don't know why, I never met her. She gave us a set of coordinates. Sayid: You knew about the island? Naomi: Island? We were given coordinates in the middle of the bloody ocean. We thought it was a fool's errand until 3 days ago. She explains that the clouds opened up and she saw the island just before the helicopter's instruments went haywire. Sayid asks Desmond if he actually saw the helicopter. No. Then he speculates that she has no means whatsoever of communicating with her ship. Naomi is offended. She shows him the satellite phone. Naomi: Remind me not to rescue you, Sayid.

    More in a bit.

    The Brig (cont.)

Locke and Sawyer walk through the jungle. Sawyer explains that the guy in Sydney was a mistake. He thought he was someone else. He didn't mean to kill him. Locke: Well, who'd you mean to kill? Sawyer: Are we almost there? Locke: Almost.

Ben wakes Locke up. He tell him that it's time. Ben take Locke to where his father is tied to a pillar. The Others have gathered to watch. Ben takes the gag off Dad. Dad doesn't think that Locke can do it and taunts him. Ben encourages him. Dad: You really haven't figured it out yet, have you? Ben tells Locke he has to let go of his father. Ben: As long as he's still breathing you'll still be that same sad, pathetic little man. Locke takes the knife, he can't do it. Dad: I'll be here the rest of the week, John, if you change your ming. Ben knocks Dad out with his cane. Ben turns to The Others: I'm sorry. He's not who we thought he was.

Locke and Sawyer arrive at The Black Rock. Locke: Ben's inside, in the brig. Sawyer says he's ready. They walk through the ship. Sawyer hears a noise: Son of a bitch, you really kidnapped the little bastard. We ain't killin' him. Locke: Whatever you say, James. Locke shows him to the brig and locks him in with a hooded figure. Sawyer pounds on the door then pulls off the hood. It's Dad. Sawyer: Who are you?

Sayid works on the satellite phone. Kate comes upon them. She starts asking questions. Sayid: Kate, if I explain, I want you to keep this very quiet.

Locke sits outside the locked brig as Sawyer pounds on the door. Rousseau comes in. She's there for dynamite. She hears the pounding but doesn't say anything. She takes her dynamite and leaves.

Richard introduces himself to Locke as he sits on a hill overlooking The Others camp. Richard tells Locke that Ben wanted to embarrass him. When word got around that a man with a broken spine could suddenly walk again, people got excited, because that could only happen to someone who is extremely special. Richard: Ben doesn't want anyone to think you're special. Richard thinks that Ben is wasting time on novelties like fertility problems. They are there for more important reasons. He wants Locke to find his purpose. That can't happen with Locke's dad still around. Richard gives Sawyer's file to Locke.

Dad starts talking to Sawyer. How did he get to the island? He was in a car accident in Tallahassee. Of course he was. He was put in an ambulance. Before he went under he thought the paramedic smiled at him. I bet he did since that paramedic must have been Richard. Wait, how did Richard get to Tallahassee? When did he go? How did he get back? I still know it was Richard who went. The next thing Dad knew he was tied up in a dark room until they opened a door to show him his dead son. Dad admits to conning Locke out of a kidney and to pushing him out of a window. Dad thinks they are in hell. Conned? Wait, what? Sawyer catches on: What's your name? Dad has a whole list of names. Anthony Cooper gets mentioned, so does Tom Sawyer. Dad: The ladies loved that one, made me charming. Sawyer: Well, how bout that. Sawyer's my name too.

Flashback: The Others are moving on, again. They are leaving an easy to follow trail but Locke shouldn't bother unless he's carrying his father's body on his back.

Sawyer asks Dad if he's ever been to Jasper, Alabama. Dad admits that yeah, he's been to Jasper. Dad: Don't tell me I'm your daddy. Sawyer: No, you killed my daddy. Sawyer takes out the letter. Dad starts to read it but doesn't get very far. Then he starts in on Sawyer, blaming Sawyer's mother and father for what happened to them. Dad, I don't think you quite get who and what you're dealing with here. He gets Sawyer mad enough. Sawyer: Do you want to go to hell? Then Sawyer strangles Dad with the chains. Locke opens the door: Thank you.

Jack and Juliet sit on the beach. Kate comes up. Kate tells Jack about Naomi. Sayid, why did you trust Kate? Jack: Why didn't anyone tell me this? Kate: Nobody told you because they don't trust you. Juliet thinks they should tell Kate. Jack and Juliet have a secret of their own.

Sawyer goes outside and throws up. He's not really a killer but this was personal. I understand Sawyer. Sawyer asks why. Locke: He ruined my life and he ruined yours and he had it coming. Locke tells Sawyer about Ben (and Juliet's) plans. Locke isn't going back to the beach, he's on his own journey now. He gives Sawyer the recorder. Sawyer wants to know if it's true, if Locke was a cripple. Locke: Not anymore.

Locke goes to his father's body and starts carrying it.

    Nevermind....

Just saw Jason's link in the other Lost string...
    http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...&cs=1&nid=4749

Wow - don't know if I can hold out until Feb! Any idea how many episodes? Jason, maybe just forewarn against any foreshadowing - caveat emptor - and then go ahead and share some of what you've heard about the final season.

I for one am hoping they cool it a bit on the time travel concept.

    The Man Behind the Curtain

    Happy Thanksgiving, DukeUsul.

A woman is giving birth in the woods. Her husband is there, helping. "Emily, you can do this." The baby is a boy. Emily thinks something is wrong. "Roger, it hurts." He carries her, she carries the baby. He gets her to a road, so, OK, we're not on the island. There is a road sign "Portland - 32", OK, so we're not exactly in Portland either. A young couple in a red roadster stop to help. They aren't exactly wearing modern clothes, none of the cars are new models either. They put Emily in the back seat. Emily: Roger, call him Benjamin. She passes out. Wow. Well, so much for being born on the island, huh, Ben?

Ben holding a carved wooden doll, Richard enters. The doll is a birthday present. It's Ben's birthday. Ben: You do remember birthdays, don't you, Richard? Richard wants to know if Ben wants him to take the recorder back to the medical station for Juliet. Ben thought he took it yesterday. Ben asks Tom about the recorder and sees Locke coming into the camp. Locke drops Dad at Ben's feet. Locke: You said that if I killed my father, you'd tell me everything I want to know about the island. So, why don't you start at the beginning. I'll hand it to Locke, he knows how to make an entrance when he needs to.

Ben tells Locke that it's not that simple. He can't just open up a dusty old book that tells everything. Ben is not the leader of The Others. Really? No, it's true, he answers to Jacob. Locke tells Ben to take him to Jacob. Ben can't. Locke thinks that maybe Richard will take him. Ben is the only one who talks to Jacob. Ben is one of the last people that was born on the island so Jacob talks to him, tells him what to do, trusts him. Locke: You know what I think, Ben? I think there is no Jacob . . . you are the man behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz and you're a liar. I'm inclined to agree with Locke here. Why does Locke think that? Locke: Because if you were telling the truth, your hand wouldn't be shaking.

Flashback Ben arriving on the island with his father, he looks to be about 12 years old. They are greeted with garlands and 'Namaste'. Mr. Goodspeed - Horace - meets them. Mr. Goodspeed was the good samaritan in the red roadster when Ben was born. Roger tells him that Ben doesn't talk much. Horace got Roger the job. He takes Roger and Ben to processing. They watch another Marvin Candle orientation film. He explains about Doorbell Stonehenge. They should stay within the fence. Marvin can be heard saying "for the betterment of mankind and the advancement of world peace". A little girl, Annie, introduces herself to Ben and gives him an Apollo candy bar. Roger is upset to find out he's a janitor - a Work Man.

Sawyer talks to Sayid. He tells him that he was with Locke and shows him the recorder.

Mikhail runs into The Others' camp looking for Ben. Ben thought he was dead. You weren't the only one, buddy. Mikhail: I was fortunate the pylons were not set to a lethal level. Mikhail is not happy to see Locke. Mikhail tells Ben about Naomi. Ben says they will take care of it day after tomorrow. Mikhail says they have to go now. Locke says they can't. Ben is taking him to see Jacob. Ben starts to negotiate with Locke. Mikhail: Since when do you explain yourself to him, an outsider? Locke comes over and beats up Mikhail. Ben calls to Tom and Richard. They don't intervene. Locke: So, when do we leave?

Ben and Locke filling water bottles at a stream. Ben tells Locke that he didn't need to beat Mikhail senseless. Locke: Yes, I did. Alex comes up. If Locke is going to see Jacob, he'll need a gun. She gives him one. Alex: Happy Birthday, Dad. They share a look.

Flashback: Young Ben in class, Annie asks about the volcano on this island. It was a long time ago. There's a volcano on the island? I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that tidbit of information comes up again. An alarm goes off. The teacher tells the kids to get into their positions. She tells Annie to lock the back door and gets a gun. Annie shows Ben where to go and tells him not to worry, it's just the hostiles.

Later Ben, holding his pet rabbit in his room, overhears his father arguing with Horace. Dad was driving back from The Flame and he drove into a shootout. They don't exactly know who the hostiles are. Roger wants more pay and he doesn't care about Ben's education. Ben sees his mother outside his bedroom window.

Sayid and Sawyer are looking for Juliet. Juliet is off somewhere with Jack. Kate comes up and tells them that she told Jack about Naomi. Sayid is not happy about it. He tells Sawyer to play the tape for Kate.

Ben tells Locke that Locke may think Jacob is the Wizard of Oz but he is very real. Ben: This is not a man you go and see. This is a man who summons you. Locke: I guess there's a first time for everything. Ben and Locke head out. Mikhail, Richard, Alex, and Tom watch them leave.

Flashback: Ben gets a birthday present from Annie. It's carved wooden dolls - they represent Ben and Annie. We've seen the Annie doll before. Ben goes inside to find his dad drunk on Dharma Initiative beer and passed out on the couch. Dad wakes up. He apologizes for forgetting his birthday but says it's hard to celebrate the day he killed his mother. Ben gets upset and runs out. He sees his mom on the other side of Doorbell Stonehenge. He starts to run to her. Mom: Ben, don't! It's not time yet, Benjamin. She leaves.

The Man Behind the Curtain (cont.)

Ben and Locke walk through the night woods. They step over a stripe (a large circle perhaps) of grey powder. Locke investigates it, smells it. Ben urges him to move along.

Meanwhile, there is a night meeting on the beach. Sayid tells them that the world thinks they are dead. Naomi is at the meeting. They kept her a secret to protect her from Jack. Sun defends Juliet so Sawyer plays the tape. Just as the natives are about to gather up their pitchforks, Jack and Juliet show up. She tells Sawyer to turn the tape over. He does and we hear Ben's instructions. Juliet is to mark any pregnant woman's tent with a white rock. The Others are coming the next night. Juliet came clean with Jack. Jack didn't tell them before because he hadn't decided what to do about it yet. Sayid: Yet? Jack: I think we got some catching up to do.

Flashback: Ben, still 12, has the code to Doorbell Stonehenge and sneaks out of the compound looking for his mother. He hears whispering in the trees then sees Richard. It's the same Richard. He looks marginally younger but I think it's just the '70s do that he's rockin'. He's got a groovy tunic type shirt on too. He certainly doesn't look 30 years younger. Ben starts to run away but Richard stops him. Ben asks if he is one of them, a hostile. Richard wonders if Ben even knows what that word means. Ben tells Richard about seeing his dead mother. Richard perks up. Ben might be special? Richard wants to know if he spoke with his dead mother. Yes. Richard: What did she say? Ben says that she told him that is wasn't time yet. Richard tells him he should go back. Ben doesn't want to go back. He hates it there. Ben: Take me with you. Richard: Maybe that can happen, maybe. If that's what you really want . . . you're gonna have to be very patient.

Ben and Locke arrive at Jacob's house. Ben tells Locke to turn off his flashlight. Jacob feels the same way about technology as Locke. Is Locke a Luddite? I hadn't really noticed if he is. Ben lights a lantern. Locke turns off the safety on his gun. Ben: Once I open this door there's no turning back. Are you sure this is what you want? Locke is sure. Ben: So be it. Ben warns Jacob that they are coming inside.

What follows next is a complete and total freak out. I'm sure you can all relate. It's a dark house but the we can still see the chair, the empty chair. Ben (to 'Jacob'): I told you he wouldn't. Then Ben turns to Locke: You can't see him? Nope, Locke can't, neither can we. Ben carries on a conversation with the non-existant Jacob. I get a Psycho vibe, minus the actual skeleton. If it weren't for the ageless Richard, I'd think Ben was completely off his rocker but Richard seems to think there is a Jacob. Tom does too. I'm bumfuzzled. Locke doesn't know about Richard, so he thinks Ben is crazy. I would too, if I were Locke. Locke: You're crazy. You don't know anything about the island, do you? You just made it all up. Ben keeps talking to Jacob. Locke: Shut up! You're putting on a show for me? Or do you really think there's someone there? Ben: I know someone is there. Locke: You don't know anything. Ben: I'm sorry you feel that way, John. And I'm sorry that you're too limited to see. Locke: You're pathetic. Locke turns to leave and a voice that isn't Ben's says "Help me." Locke turns around. C'mon Locke, you know that's not Ben's voice, why in the world would you ask him what he just said. But he does. Ben denies. Locke turns on the flashlight to have a look around and all heck breaks loose. Ben tells the empty chair "That's enough! You've had your fun!" and gets himself tossed against the wall. Then suddenly, for the briefest of moments, the chair isn't empty. We get a glimpse of someone, you've probably seen the portrait of this guy painted by Edvard Munch. Locke runs out of the house. Ben slowly follows with somewhat of an air of defeat about him. Locke: What was that? Ben: That was Jacob. So, there's a man behind the curtain after all.

Locke and Ben walk back, it's daylight now. Ben wants to know what Jacob said to him. Locke still doesn't believe that there is a Jacob. He thinks Ben put on a show. Really? I think you're just being perverse, Locke, cause I'm convinced there's Jacob. Ben admits to sometimes not telling the truth. Locke wants to know why they are going back a different way. Ben wants to show him something. Locke is tired of Ben showing him things. Ben: For starters, I wasn't born on this island. Duh. Locke: Then where did you come from? Ben: That's what I want to show you.

Flashback: Adult Ben, with a truly amazing hairpiece which I guess is supposed to make him look younger, is dressed in a Dharma Initiative jumpsuit. He's a Work Man with his dad now. He picks up the Annie wooden doll. Then he and dad load up a blue VW minibus. That's the vehicle of choice for the Dharma Initiative, by the way, we've seen several. Dad has forgotten his birthday once again. Alex, I think I'm really glad you remembered. Roger suggests they go up to the mesa after their work is done, have some beers, and a little father-son time. Ben: I'd like that. On the drive to the mesa we hear 'Shambala' playing on the car stereo. Roger pops open a beer. Ben: Do you really blame me? Do you really think it's my fault that she died? Roger: What do I know? Ben keeps looking at his watch. Roger notices. Does Ben have a date? Roger promises to try and remember his birthday next year. Ben: I don't think that's going to happen, Dad. Ben has missed his mom too but he's also had to put up with dad. Ben: And doing that required a tremendous amount of patience. Goodbye Dad. Ben puts on a gas mask and pulls out a canister. He pops the canister. Roger starts coughing and bleeding from his nose. Ben doesn't watch but he stays in the car. Then we see Ben walking back to The Barracks where everyone is dead. Everyone. Wow, just wow. No wonder nobody came to relieve Kelvin and Radzinsky. He pauses at Horace Goodspeed's body to close his eyes. A group of Others lead by Richard appear wearing gas masks. Richard checks his watch then takes off his mask. Richard: You want us to uhm, go get his body? Ben: No, leave him out there.

Hey Ben? I thought you weren't a killer? Yeah, I didn't believe you then either. But I gotta say, I didn't realize it was that big of a lie. We do not see Annie's body among the dead, not that we'd recognize her anyway, but I'm going to assume she's not there. Maybe she'll turn up in a later season.

Ben shows Locke the mass grave of skeletons still wearing their Dharma Initiative jumpsuits. Ben: This is where I came from, John. These are my people. The Dharma Initiative. They came here seeking harmony but they couldn't even co-exist with the island's original inhabitants. Ben was smart enough to choose the right side so he didn't end up in that ditch. Ben: Which makes me considerably smarter than you, John. Locke pulls his gun. Too late. Ben shoots him and Locke falls into the ditch. Locke asks why. Ben: Because you heard him. He needs to know what Jacob said. Locke: He said, "Help me." Ben: Well, I certainly hope he helps you, John. Ben leaves.

I refuse to believe that Locke is dead, by the way.

    Jack
    Locke
    Kate
    Ben
    Sun
    Jin
    Hurley
    Sawyer (yeah, he belongs)

    To a lesser extent:

    BD,

The recaps rockrockrockrock, but I'd love to get your thoughts and reactions to some of the previous few episodes as well as the next couple to come in this season.

What did you think when Sawyer strangled Locke's dad? When Ben shot Locke? What are your thoughts about what went on in Jacob's shack? Give us not just a recap but share your experience, know what I mean?

Sawyer didn't strangle him because he was Locke's dad, he strangled him because Locke's dad was the original Sawyer, he was the 6 fingered man to Sawyer's Inigo Montoya. Yeah, I used a comedy example but the sentiment is exactly the same. Sawyer hunted his own 6 fingered man for about the same amount of time as Inigo too. When Sawyer says he ain't a killer, I believe him despite the man in Sydney. Sawyer's not killing so much as he's getting revenge. I think if Locke's Dad had just read the letter instead of behaving the way he did, Sawyer might have had a hard time killing him too. But Locke's dad was a sociopath and he thought he was already dead, so, why try to con your way out of that situation? If he'd read the situation differently, he probably would have tried. I'm sure Locke knew the relationship before he locked Sawyer in that room. I suspect the info was in Sawyer's red folder.

Why does Richard take orders from Ben? (Don't answer that, it's rhetorical, and perhaps gets answered in Season 4.)

When Ben was bringing Locke back a different way I started getting worried for our man Locke. When Locke turned his back on Ben at the grave, I was yelling at him not to do that. I wasn't surprised in the least that Ben views Locke as a threat. Richard even told us that. He told Locke too. Locke is just a bit too trusting if you ask me. But like I speculated already, Locke is not dead. He will come back, and it's a given it will be in dramatic fashion. I'll bet exploring the Ben/Locke dynamic is one of the best things about Season 4.

What went on in Jacob's shack? The reason Ben is the leader, despite not being the oldest among them is because he can see Jacob. I suspect nobody else has been able to before. The fact that all The Others believe in Jacob is, well, something I hope gets addressed later. I'm betting that grey powder comes back up. Jacob did figure out a way to make himself known to Locke and asked Locke to help him, why? Ben is violent and unforgiving. Did he somehow get the upper hand? Is he the Sith Apprentice who has figured out how to replace the Sith Master? But he hasn't killed Jacob so Jacob must still have some power. But yeah, I think Jacob is real. Unless lighting the lantern releases some kind of sweat hut peyote filled dreams in that little house. That could be another explanation, but it will disappoint me if it's true. I've posted before how much I hate a deus ex machina plot device.

Ben sitting next to his father as he bleeds from the nose and chokes to death on the gas? He could have gotten out of the car. Even with the hatred, it would have to be hard to witness (or just listen to) for most people. That's just cold, cold, cold.

    Greatest Hits

Somebody running through the woods. It looks like Carl to me. He gets into the outrigger and heads out across the water.

Jack leads Juliet, Hurley, Claire, Desmond, and Charlie somewhere. There wind up in a big field. Jack turns around: We're here. Desmond weirds out. Charlie suspects a flash. Desmond says no. Acutally, everybody is there, not a smaller group. They still want to know what Jack is up to. Jack calls to Rousseau. And now we know why Rousseau was getting the dynamite. Jack has a trap planned for The Others. Instead of pregnant women in the tents marked with white rocks, they are going to find dynamite.

Flashback: Charlie with Drive Shaft changing a tire in the rain. They hear their song on the radio for the first time.

Charlie writing - #5 The first time I heard myself on the radio. Naomi comes up and asks Charlie who are they going to war with. Charlie say it's a long story and to ask him something else. He recognizes that Naomi is also from Manchester (by way of somewhere Spanish speaking, I suppose). Naomi realizes that he is the 'dead rock star'. They made a big deal out of it. There's a new album out, a greatest hits album. Naomi: Look on the bright side, you're not really dead. Charlie sees Desmond over Naomi's shoulder.

Rousseau, Juliet, and Jack rig a tent with dynamite. They don't have enough wire. Jack sends folks to start stripping the fuselage for anything they can find. Sayid nees to talk to Jack about Naomi's phone. They can't transmit because of Danielle's signal. Sayid knows if he can turn if off, Naomi's compatriots on the ship will hear him. Juliet: No they won't. We're jamming it. Ben is using another of the Dharma stations to jam communications off the island. Which one? The Looking Glass. All Juliet knows about it is that it's underwater. She doesn't know where it is. Sayid: I believe I do.

Charlie plays with Aaron. Claire is worried. Charlie promises to protect them both. Desmond asks Charlie to give him a hand with something. Charlie: Of course. Charlie figures Desmond is ready to tell him what he saw. Desmond saw Claire and Aaron get into a rescue helicopter. Charlie: I thought you were gonna tell me I was gonna die again. Desmond: You are, Charlie. If you don't, none of it will happen. There won't be any rescue. I'm sorry, Brother, but this time? This time you have to die.

Flashback: Charlie's dad urging him to jump into the swimming pool. He finally does.

Charlie writing - #4 Dad teaching me to swim at Butlins. Desmond asks what's he writing. Nothing. Charlie: All right, tell me. Desmond: Are you sure you want to know? Charlie's sure. Desmond sees him inside a hatch, full of equipment. There's a blinking yellow light. He flips the switch, the light goes off and then he drowns. Charlie: When? Desmond: I don't know. Charlie: You're sure you saw Claire and Aaron get on that helicopter? Charlie decides he needs to flip the switch. Where is it?

Sayid has a map of The Looking Glass. Juliet has never been down there. She doesn't know anyone who has. Ben told them that there was an accident and the station was flooded. How is it still working. Sayid doesn't care, he's only worried about how to get in and shut it off. He has a map (IIRC, he took the map from The Flame before it exploded). He points out the moon pool to Jack and Juliet. How do they get down there? Swim. Sayid thinks that even if the station is flooded, he can get down there and flip the switch. Jack wonder how he will get back out. Sayid gives him a look. Jack isn't going to let Sayid go on a suicide mission. Sayid: Someone has to do it or we'll never leave this island. Charlie walks up: I'll do it. jack tells Charlie he doesn't know what they're talking about. Charlie: I was junior swim champion of Northern England. I can hold my breath for 4 minutes. I know exactly what you're talking about. Nice lie, Charlie, very convincing. I think you fooled Jack, maybe. But I remember in Season 1 when Joanna was drowning how you told us you don't swim. I think Jack was there. When did you learn? Lying about it and actually being able to swim are 2 different things. Writers, just a touch of logical inconsistency here. Jack puts the kabosh on anybody swimming down there. They have The Others to deal with, this can wait. Sayid argues. Jack: For 90 days I've been asked to make decisions for this entire camp. There you go, I just made one.

Quick Rose and Bernard scene. She can tie knots, he can't.

Jin wonders when Sun is going to tell him whatever it is about her and Juliet. She tells him about the ultrasound. The baby is healthy. Jin is happy. She doesn't tell him she might die.

Hurley sees the outrigger arrive. People start running. Sayid gets there first, yep, it's Carl. Sayid tackles him. Sawyer vouches for him, he was in the cage next to his. Carl came to warn them about a change in plans. The Others aren't coming tomorrow night, they're coming right now.

Ben gets back to The Others' camp. Alex sees him and asks, "Where's Locke?" Ben gives her back her gun. Ben starts looking for Ryan. Since Danny's gone, Ryan is the muscle. Richard wants to know what's going on. Why is there a change in plans? Ben: Jacob wants it to happen now. Richard: What happened out there? Did John . . .
Ben: John had an accident. You know, I know we only heard what Jacob said to Locke, but he really tell Ben to change the plan? Is any of this actually Jacob's idea? I'm skeptical. Richard still protests. What if Juliet hasn't had enough time. If she hasn't completed her task, then Ben tells them to take all the women, they'll sort out who they need later. Ryan: And the men? Ben: If any of them are stupid enough to get in your way, kill them.

Alex runs to find Carl who has been hiding out. She sends him to warn the beach crowd. She gives him her gun. He goes.

Jack wonders if they can trust Carl. Carl outs Juliet as a spy. Juliet: They know, Carl, but thanks. They don't have nearly enough wire to rig the tents. Sayid suggests shooting the dynamite. I'm going to trust Sayid that it will work. They don't have enough guns. Carl pulls his out. Whoa. No, he's just giving it to Sayid. Rousseau says she'll be the third shooter. Jack says they will take her gun but she's not staying. They need her to lead everybody to the radio tower. Everything needs to happen at the same time now, no dealing with The Others first. Jack: Charlie, are you still up for a swim? Charlie: I believe I am. Claire doesn't think so. Desmond: I'll go with him. Aw, Desmond.

Flashback: Liam gives Charlie the family heirloom - a ring - for Christmas when they are on tour in Finland. Charlie: I'll hold onto it, but I won't take it.

Charlie writing - #3 The Christmas Liam gave me the ring. He goes to see Claire. He didn't tell her about his swim plans because he didn't want her to worry. She's worried anyway. He makes her promise not to. He takes Aaron and puts him to bed. He plays with Aaron's feet: I love you. Then he shares a goodbye kiss with Claire. Are they really and truly going to kill Charlie? This episode, it sure feels that way. He sure thinks he's a dead man.

Flashback: Charlie busking. It starts to rain but it's a different time than the one where Desmond shows up. As he's leaving he sees a woman getting mugged. He helps her. She calls him a hero. Charlie: I just did what anyone would do. No, not anyone, three people walked by before he stopped to help.

Charlie writing - #4 Woman outside Covent Garden calls me a hero.

Desmond is making a weight belt for Charlie. It will make swimming down easier. Desmond: How long can you really hold your breath for? Charlie: Does it matter?

Bernard shooting cans. He's very good! Bernard: You want me to hit another. Sayid: Nope, you've made your point. Rose is there. She plans to stay with the shooters. Jack says no. Jack: If we don't kill everyone who shows up here in about an hour, it's not going to mater where Bernard is. Rose: I like you better since you got back, you almost sound like an optimist.
Sayid tells Jack he's taking Jack's place as a shooter. Jack protests. Sayid: This afternoon you said you were our leader. It's time for you to act like one. Lead them to the radio tower, Jack. And then take us all home. Oh Sayid, when, when, when do you take your shirt off? Please let it be in Season 4.

Hurley find Charlie and Desmond. He wants to go with them. He wants to feel useful, he doesn't want to trek across the island again. Charlie tells him that he can't. Hurley: Why not? Charlie tells him that he is too big. Hurley is hurt. Charlie chases him down and hugs him. Hurley tells him it's OK. Charlie: Just remember, I love you, Man. Hurley: Yeah, whatever, I love you too.

Claire packs up Aaron to leave. Camera shot of Charlie's ring in Aaron's cradle. I wonder how many babies have played Aaron at this point? I think it was probably a very wise decision to go bald from the beginning.

Desmond and Charlie locate the cable and head out in the outrigger, using the cable as a guide.

Flashback: The first night on the island after the crash. Charlie comes over to talk to Claire. He cheers her up.

Charlie writing - #1 The night I met you. Desmond: We're here. Charlie gives the list to Desmond. He wants Desmond to give it to Claire. Desmond: What is it? Charlie: It's the five best moments of my sorry excuse for a life - greatest hits. Desmond offers to go instead. Desmond: Maybe I keep seeing you die because I'm supposed to take your place. Charlie: What about your girl, Penny? Desmond: What about your girl? Desmond might be luckier than Charlie. Desmond looks around for the weight belt and Charlie gets all Matt Damon on Desmond's Jude Law. He knocks Desmond out with an oar and puts the list in Desmond's pocket. Charlie: You and I both know, you aren't supposed to take my place, Brother. Charlie puts on the weight belt and jumps in. He swims down, finds the moon pool, and comes up. He's rather happy to find himself still alive. The station isn't flooded, but it is occupied, by two women, with guns.

Through the Looking Glass Part 1

I think this episode originally aired as a 2-hour season finale, yes? Anyway, I notice Malcolm David Kelley is in the credits. Walt is back. Michael isn't. Hmmmm.

Flashback: Jack, with a horrific beard, looking decidedly doughy and a little depressed sits drinking on an airplane. I think it's an Oceanic flight. He asks the flight attendant for another drink. She turns him down, they are landing in 20 minutes. She gives him a newspaper instead. At first he sets the paper down but after a brief bit of turbulence, he notices an article which appears to upset him. He tears it out. Once on the ground, sitting in his car, he reads the newspaper article again. He starts to cry then makes a phone call. He starts to leave a message then hangs up. He is parked on a bridge. He gets out, goes over to the edge, climbs up on the wall but he doesn't take his shoes off so I don't know how serious he actually is about this, he looks up "Forgive me". I guess he really is about to jump when there is a car crash behind him. He hears people calling for help and it's Jack, so, of course he goes to help. Did they crash into his car? (Note to writers, weird fact, jumpers take their shoes off.)

Jack and Kate share a look as they pack up. If Matthew Fox filmed these scenes at anywhere close to the same time, it's remarkable how different he looks. That beard would take time to grow and he looks decidedly thinner. I wonder what they did, a fat suit? Matthew came back to do pick-ups? I'm curious. Anyway, back to the episode. Kate looks from Jack to Sawyer and the last episode of Seson 3 is still milking the triangle. Jack checks with the shooters, Sayid, Bernard, and Jin. Sayid: Jack, no matter what happens here, I want you to keep moving. Keep moving for that radio tower. Don't turn back for any reason. I am willing to give my life if it means securing rescue but I'm not giving it up for nothing. You understand? Jack understands. They shake hands.

Rose talks to Bernard: If I told you that I'd help you with the SOS sign, would you change your mind? Bernard: No ma'am. Rose: I want you to say it again. Bernard: Rose! Rose: Say it, Bernard. Bernard: I am a dentist, I am not Rambo. Rose: And don't you forget it. Bernard, I'm glad they finally show you being good at something.

Hurley tells Claire that Charlie will be fine. She agrees.

Jin tells Sun to stay close to Jack. Sun asks why Jin is doing this. Jin (in English): Because we have to go home.

The Lostaways head out, leaving the three shooters on the beach.

Naomi wants to know what Jack did before he became Moses. He was a doctor. Of course he was. Naomi wants to tell him something but not in front of Juliet. Juliet takes the hint and leaves. Naomi shows Jack how to use the phone in case something happens to her.

The two women in The Looking Glass, a blonde and a brunette, question Charlie. Charlie is tied to a chair and the blonde keeps hitting him. Brunette: Hey, take it easy. Blonde: Take it easy? He's one of them. Charlie explains that Juliet told them about the station, Juliet is one of us now. Brunette: We gotta call Ben. Charlie: Yap, let's call Ben. The women go into an anteroom with a blinking yellow light. Charlie gets the significance.

Ben gets a call on his walkie. He wants to know why they are breaking radio silence. Blonde: One of them is down here. Who? He won't say. Charlie yells out: It's Charlie, tell him I said hi. Has Charlie ever interacted with Ben before? He wasn't one of the ones privvy to Ben being in held prisoner in the hatch. Anyway. Ben: how does he know about the station. Blonde: He said Juliet told them. Ben: Sit tight, I'm sending help. He sends Mikhail. Mikhail though The Looking Glass was flooded. In a shocking turn of events, Ben admits he lied. Mikhail says he can be there by dawn but he wonders what else Juliet might have told the Lostaways. Richard hears this conversation too.

Ben radios Ryan. Ryan is surveying the beach through binoculars. All looks well. Ryan checks that all their walkies are off. Random Other Woman: The tents are marked with white coral. Three of them, Juliet did her job. The band of Others enter the camp. As The Others reach the tents and discover them empty, Sayid hits his target. Bernard hits his. Jin misses. Ryan captures Jin. Bernard goes to help and gets grabbed by Tom. Sayid has Ryan in his sights when a third surviving Other holds a gun to his head and tells him to drop it. Sayid drops his gun.

The Lostaways see the two explosions but not the third.

Flashback: Jack is in the ER getting stitches. He asks about the woman he just saved. She's been stabilized. A very pregnant Sarah shows up. She wants to know if Jack's been drinking again. Jack: Why did you come down here, Sarah? Sarah: I'm still listed as your emergency contact. She wants to know what he was doing driving around at 2am. He asks for a life home. Sarah: I don't think that would be appropriate. Geez, why did you bother to come down then? I don't get the point of this scene other than to show us a pregnant Sarah. Somebody else could have asked Jack if he'd been drinking. Plus we've already seen him drinking on the airplane. I'm also trying to figure out when this could have happened. Did Jack go on a bender right after the divorce? I'm a bit mystified.

Sun and Rose get worried about only 2 explosions. Trust your instincts, ladies. They want to wait. Jack says no. Rose: If you say 'live together, die alone' to me, Jack, I'm gonna punch you in the face. He doesn't say it but he does urge everyone to keep moving. They do. Naomi checks the phone, still red.

Charlie tells the blonde that he's there to turn off the jamming equipment. He's going to turn it off no matter what. Blonde: So, what's the code? There's a code, uh-oh. Only Blondie, her partner, and Ben know the code. Oops. Charlie won't need it since the station will flood. Blonde: But if the station floods, what happens to you? Charlie: I die. He's rather matter of fact and it worries the women.

Tom reports to Ben that the Shooters killed 7 Others. Tom tells Ben that they knew The Others were coming. The Lostaways are all gone except for the Shooters, they caught them. Ben says that Juliet betrayed them and he wants to know which three. Tom: Jarrah, Kwon, and the dentist. Poor Bernard, he's known as the dentist. Ben tells them to shoot Kwon to get the other two to talk. Bernard starts to talk. Jin and Sayid try to keep him quiet. Bernard talks anyway. He tells Tom and Ryan that the Lostaways are heading to the radio tower. He tells them about Naomi. Bernard also tells them about Carl. Tom: What do you want us to do, kill them? Ben: No, not yet. Ben knows that Alex betrayed him. It's dawn now.

Ben tells Richard that he is going to the radio tower, alone. Richard is taking everyone to the temple. The temple? That's new. Richard tells Ben that people are asking questions about leaving home, Locke, Jacob, and the rumor that everybody who went down to the beach is dead. Ben: They're not all dead. Alex asks ben where he's going. He's going for a walk, to find Jack. She says that she is coming too. He says all right. Ben: In fact I think it's a good idea. I mean, you do want to see Carl again, don't you? Alex leaves to get her pack. Richard: There's 40 of them and you're alone and they'll do anything to get off the island. What are you gonna do when you get there? Ben: I'm going to talk them out of it.

Kate talks to Sawyer. She wants to go back. Sawyer says of course she does. There is always someone to go back for. Kate tries to snap Sawyer out of his funk. She wants to know when did he start calling her Kate. She reminds him that Juliet was checking if she was pregnant too. Sawyer: Let's hope you're not.

Still no luck with the phone.

Desmond wakes up, still in the boat. He was passed out all night? I hope he doesn't have a concussion! Mikhail arrives and starts shooting. Desmond dives in and swims for the hatch. He pops up while the women are arguing in the anteroom. Charlie tells him to hide. The women notice him talking and come to investigate. Charlie was just singing to himself. They buy the story, sort of.

Flashback: Jack checking on the woman he rescued from the burning car. She has a fractured spine. The attending won't let Jack do the surgery.

The Lostaways trekking. Sawyer announces he's going back. Jack: No way, we keep moving. Sawyer: I wasn't asking permission. Kate says she'll go too. Sawyer says no, he doesn't want to go with her. Jack: Sawyer, it's a suicide mission without guns. Juliet comes up, she knows where some guns are. Jack: Juliet, you don't have to do that. Juliet: Yeah, I kinda do. Sawyer agrees. Jack: Don't do anything stupid. Juliet: I won't if you won't. She kisses him. Kate sees it. Juliet: Don't wait up.

Charlie keeps singing which drives the blonde - Bonnie -crazy. She goes to get the spear gun. It's in Desmond's hiding place. Charlie says he'll shut up but Bonnie's on a mission now. Just as she gets to the locker, Mikhail pops up. Mikhail: I thought you two were on assignment in Canada. Bonnie: He made us promise not to tell anyone. Mikhail wonders where the other one is. Charlie interrupts to point out that Ben has been lying about the station and the jamming. Ben radios in. Mikhail answers. Ben explains himself. Jacob told him to lie to his own people. Why? Ben: Because this island is under assault . . . and we are meant to protect it, by any means necessary. Mikhail wonders why Ben didn't trust him. Ben apologizes then asks Mikhail to help him clean up the mess he's made. Cleaning up the mess means he needs to kill Charlie and keep the jamming mechanism going at all costs. Since Ben can't risk the lies coming out, Mikhail needs to kill Bonnie and Greta too. Mikhail wants to know how he can be sure Ben didn't tell Bonnie and Greta the same thing. Ben: Because if I had Mikhail, you'd already be dead. I thought he was. Dead, I mean. Mikhail is one of those where even if you see the body, you can't be sure. He's not just named for a Russian anarchist. He's Michael Myers.

The Trek, Jack talks to Kate about Sawyer. Jack realizes that Sawyer was just trying to protect her. Kate: Why are you sticking up for Sawyer? He'd never do it for you. Jack: Because I love you. Well, then, suck on that one, Kate.

Sawyer wants to know why The Others had them busting rocks. Juliet explains that they were building a runway. For what? Juliet: The aliens. Sawyer asks about the guns. There are no guns. Juliet lied because it's the only way jack would let them go back. Sawyer: So, why are you going back? Juliet: Karma, why are you going back? Hurley catches up to them. He wants to help. Sawyer declines and isn't very nice about it. Poor Hurley.

Alex wants to know why Ben let her come. He's turning her over to her new family since she betrayed him. He was worried that Carl would get her pregnant. It's a bonafide worry on this island so, I can't really fault Ben for that one. The means? Not so good, but the intention is understandable. Alex wonders why he doesn't just let the Lostaways leave. Ben: Because I can't, Alex. Season 4, there are so many questions, oh Season 4, do you answer them? I bet you answer some of them.

John 'Not Dead Yet' Locke, in the ditch, struggles for his gun. He's about to shoot himself when Walt stops him. There he is, just when I'd forgotten to be looking for him! I wondered what his role would be. It may have only been about 3 weeks since Walt left in island time but Malcolm David Kelley has hit puberty and a growth spurt and his voice has changed. Walt is standing at the edge of the ditch. Walt: Don't John. Put the gun down. Locke: He shot me and I can't move my legs. Walt: You can move your legs, now get out of the ditch. Locke: Why? Walt: Because, you have work to do. Yeah, so get going Locke, I have every confidence you can pull an Eric Northman and expel that bullet yourself, you don't need Sookie to suck it out.

And that's the end of Part 1. One more hour of LOST to discuss and I can start on Season 4.

And once you are done with Through The Looking Glass, you can check out our comments on it here.

I just re-read that thread and it is amusing to see what we thought would happen and compare it to what does happen.

Through the Looking Glass Part 2

Flashback: Jack driving in South Central (just a guess here). He's got the newspaper article and seems to be looking for an address. He makes a phone call and gets an answering machine again. He goes into a funeral parlor. He is alone. The funeral director comes out. Jack wants to know if the funeral is over. There was no funeral, only a viewing and nobody showed up. Jack: Nobody? Are you sure? Funeral Director: Just you. My deepest condolences. Friend or family? Jack: Neither. The funeral director offers to open the casket. Not necessary. Then he tells Jack to take his time. He leaves. Jack stands at the casket and takes his last pain pill.

Jack asks Danielle how much longer to the tower, about an hour. She hasn't been back in 16 years. Then she tells Jack that she is not leaving the island. Danielle: There's no place for me back there. This is my home now. They crest a hill and see Ben with Alex. Ben: Hello, Jack. We need to talk.

Mikhail comes out of the anteroom. Greta: What did Ben say? Bonnie: Can we kill him. Mikhail determines that only Bonnie and Greta have the code to shut off the equipment and the equipment is encosed in waterproof casing. It will keep working even if the station floods. Mikhail: They why do you need to be here? Bonnie: Because Ben told us to, we are following orders. Mikhail: And you never asked why? Bonnie: No, because I trust him and I trust Jacob and the minute I start questioning orders, this whole thing, everything that we're doing here, falls apart. Mikhail: She makes an excellent point. Then he shoots Greta first. Greta falls into the moon pool. Bonnie starts to run. He shoots her in the back. The first shot doesn't kill her. He comes to shoot her again. Mikhail: I'm sorry, Bonnie, I too am following orders. Desmond comes out and shoots him with a spear gun. He gets Mikhail's gun and goes over to Bonnie. Charlie: No, Des, we need her. At this point, I start yelling at the TV: He's not dead! He's not dead! Cut his head off! He's Michael Myers!!! Years ago, when I saw Halloween, I yelled the same thing at Jamie Lee Curtis. Knitting needles? Are you kidding me? I knit. You're not killing anybody with knitting needles.

By the way, between the pregnancies and Mikhail, are there any women left among The Others. Keep this up and the natives are bound to get restless. I always wonder how the villains on Batman or even in James Bond movies got all those super loyal henchmen. C'mon, the pay can't be that great. Ben had managed to collect quite a crew himself.

Ben starts to talk to Naomi. Jack interrupts. Ben just wants to talk. Ben: Jack, you've just killed 7 of my people. The least you can give me is 5 minutes. Jack agrees. He grabs Ben's walkie as the walk off.

Flashback: Uncomfortable scene of Jack in a pharmacy trying to get oxycodone, unsuccessfully.

Ben tells Jack that he made a decision, not so long ago, that took the lives of over 40 people in a single day. I think we just saw that decision a couple of episodes ago. History is going to repeat itself. Jack: Let me guess, you've got us surrounded and if I don't do what you say, you're gonna kill all my people. Ben: No Jack, you are. Ben tells Jack that Naomi is not who she says she is. She's a representative of some people who have been trying to find the island. Hmmm, the native Spanish speaker from Manchester, England. When you're dying, I suspect you mumble in your native tongue. Ben has a point. Ben: She's one of the bad guys. Jack: I almost forgot, you're the good guys. I'm still waiting for Ben's definition of a good guy.

Aside, I like Nick Hornby's books, I've read them all, but I can't really recommend How to Be Good. His protagonist is a woman and she never quite feels real. There is one bit in the book though, that bears repeating. The main character muses about how sometimes, you do have to judge a person by their one offs. The character muses this just after she asks her husband for a divorce over the telephone. She notes that she can't really think of herself as the kind of person who wouldn't do that since she just did. Ben killed 40 people in one day. I judge him by his one off. I still can't understand how he can think of himself as 'not a killer'. Since I feel bad knocking Nick Hornby, let me add that Nipple Jesus is the greatest short story that has ever been written. In fact, I'll recommend that once you read it, never read another short story ever again. You're done after that one.

Ben: If you phone her boat, every single person on this island will be killed. Ben proposes that Jack give him the satellite phone - then Ben will go back to his people and Jack will go back to his people. I guess there will be a truce. Jack says no. Was there any doubt? Ben asks for his walkie back. Jack gives it to him. Ben radios to Tom, if Tom doesn't hear his voice in one minute he should shoot The Shooters. Ben: Bring me the phone, Jack. Jack's getting them off the island. Ben wants to know why he wants to go back so bad. Ben: Can you just not wait to get back to the hospital, get back to fixing things? Direct hit, Ben. Jack doesn't get the phone. We hear three shots. Ben: I'm so sorry, Jack. Ben, shut up, I'd beat you senseless for that. Oh, Jack does it for me. Jack gets the walkie and talks to Tom. Jack tells Tom that he's going to get his people rescued and then he's going to come find Tom and kill him.

Greta's a bloody mess floating in the water. Charlie talks to Bonnie. Charlie convinces a dying Bonnie that giving him the code is a good way to get her last revenge against Ben. She starts to give him the code, but she's dying. The code is 'Good Vibrations' by the Beach Boys. Bonnie: On the keypad, numbers, they're notes. It was programmed by a musician. She dies. Wonder if we'll ever find out who the musician is. Jack had a piano in the house he was staying in at The Barracks. I'm still telling Desmond to cut Mikhail's head off.

Jack takes a bloody Ben back to the group. Jack: Tie him up, he's coming with us. Jack walks off. Kate follows. Alex goes to Ben. Danielle steps forward and stares. Alex: What? Ben: Alex, this is your mother. Danielle and Alex share a moment. Danielle: Will you help me tie him up?

Kate asks Jack what happened. Jack tells her that Ben killed Sayid, Bernard, and Jin. Ben radioed the beach and Jack let it happen. He promised Sayid to keep going. Jack says they can't tell Rose or Sun yet. Jack kept Ben alive so that Ben will see them leave and know that he failed. And then Jack will kill him.

At the beach, The Shooters are still alive. Ryan and Tom argue. There is some dissension in the ranks. Ryan put three bullets in the sand. Tom thinks they should have killed them for real. Juliet and Sawyer have gotten back to the beach. They discuss what to do. They hear a noise. It's Hurley, in the blue minibus (no detail is unimportant!) hurtling through the camp. He runs over Ryan. Sawyer comes up using the bus as cover and gets Ryan's gun. Sawyer: Stay in the bus, Hero. (I think he says Hero, he might say Hugo.) Sayid uses the distraction to disarm the third guy. He uses his 'Army Training, Sir' to dispatch the third guy in spectacular fashion. Legs, broken neck, remember? Bernard and Jin will never mess with Sayid. And I mean never, ever, ever. Tom crawls towards his gun. Juliet gets there first. Juliet: Stay right there Tom. Tom: Ok, I give up. Sawyer shoots him anyway. As Tom dies Sawyer says, "That's for taking the kid off the raft." Hurley: Dude, it was over. He surrendered. Sawyer: I didn't believe him. Juliet doesn't know quite what to think about this new Sawyer. I'm not sure I do either. Killing the real Sawyer was one thing, this seemed a little cold-blooded, but I'll admit, he did have provocation.

Flashback: Jack is at the hospital. He steals some oxycodone. The attending finds him and asks him what he's doing. It's time for a talk. The woman he saved is doing well. She woke up and described seeing a man standing on the bridge about to jump. The distraction caused the accident. The attending wants to know what Jack was doing on the bridge. Jack resents the questions. Does the attending have any idea what he's been though? Attending: How much have you had to drink today, Jack? Jack says to get his father down there, right now, and if he, Jack, is drunker than his father, fire him. Attending: I'm trying to help you. Jack: You can't help me.

Hurley radios to Jack: Come in Others. Jack answers: Hurley? Hurley tells Jack that he went back to the beach and saved everybody. Sawyer, Juliet, Jin, Bernard, and Sayid, they are all fine. Much happiness. Claire comes to ask about Charlie. Hurley says that Charlie isn't back yet but he's sure he'll be fine.

Charlie and Desmond cover the dead bodies. Charlie notices diving gear on the wall. Desmond will get the diving gear, Charlie will take care of 'Good Vibrations'. Charlie asks if Desmond is having any flashes. Desmond says no. Charlie: Meet you back here then. Charlie finds the keypad, types the music, and the light goes off. He moves to leave the anteroom when an a buzzer goes off. The station is receiving an incoming transmission. For the second season in a row, Penny appears in the last episode. Charlie says that he's a survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. She asks him where he is. They are on an island but he doesn't know where. Charlie: Who's this. Penny: This Penelope, Penelope Widmore. How did you get this frequency? Charlie calls to Desmond. Penny: Did you say Desmond? Charlie calls to Desmond then asks about the boat and Naomi. Desmond turns around - Mikhail's body is not there. (I'm shouting "I told you so, I told you so!" at the TV.) Penny's not on a boat and who's Naomi? Mikhail appears outside the porthole, in the water, with a hand grenade. Desmond is running for the anteroom. Charlie realizes what's about to happen and gets to the door first. Charlie locks Desmond out. Mikhail sets off the hand grenade and blows open the porthole. Desmond tries to break through the door. There is a window. As the water rushes in, Charlie has the presence of mind to write 'Not Penny's Boat' on his hand. Thank goodness he had a Sharpie. Charlie holds his hand up to the window. Desmond sees it. They both nod. Then Charlie drowns. Oh my god, they've killed Charlie. I didn't believe it was going to happen until it actually did even though Charlie is now with Penny on Flash Forward.

Naomi is talking to Claire. Aaron has suddenly started crying. The phone beeps. Naomi: Charlie just got us rescued. They still need to shut off Danielle's message. But they've arrived at the radio tower.

They go inside and Danielle shuts off the message. Naomi can't get a signal inside. They go outside and get a signal. Ben is there, tied to a tree.

Ben: Jack, I know you think you're saving your people but you need to stop this, it's a mistake.

More desperate Ben: This will be your last chance Jack, making that call will be the beginning of the end.

Even more desperate Ben: Jack, please, you don't know what you're doing.

Naomi establishes a connection and gets a knife in the back. Locke returns in dramatic fashion. Jack: What did you do? Locke: What I had to. Jack gets the phone. Locke tells him to put it down. He has a gun. Ben yells for Locke to shoot Jack. Danielle cold cocks him. Locke: I will kill you if I have to. Jack: Then do it, John. Locke can't do it. Locke: Jack, you're not supposed to do this. Someone answers the phone - Minkowski. Jack explains to Minkowski who they are and that Naomi gave him the phone. He doesn't say Naomi is lying at his feet with a knife in her back. I suppose that can wait. Minkowski can get a read on their location. Just sit tight, they are coming.

Hermann Minkowski, teacher of Einstein, laid down the mathematical framework for the theory of relativity. He was the first to consider space and time not as independent but coupled together in a four-dimensional 'space-time continuum'. It's true. You can look it up.

Flashback: Jack finally gets whoever he's been trying to call on the phone. he just needs to see whoever it is. They meet at the airport. It's Kate. I didn't realize until she got out of the car that these were Flash Forwards. Hey wait, isn't there a new show called Flash Forward? Kate looks great. Getting off the island appears to have treated her well. Jack looks terrible. Kate: Why did you call me, Jack? He shows her the newspaper article. He thought he might see her at the funeral. Kate: Why would I go to the funeral? Jack has been flying a lot - using the golden pass Oceanic Airlines gave him. Why? Because he wants to crash. He wants to get back. Kate: This is not gonna change. Jack: No, I'm sick of lying. We made a mistake. Kate: I have to go. He's going to be wondering where I am. Jack: We were not supposed to leave. Kate: Yes, we were. Jack: We have to go back, Kate. She gets into her car. Jack: We have to go back.

Oh, don't tell me Ben was right!

    A couple of speculations

I imagine a lot of the original discussion was over who is in the coffin. I'm going to tell you. I'll be shocked if I'm wrong. Locke. Clues, Jack would go to the funeral and be upset that the person was dead but he or she is neither a friend nor family. I gotta say, only Locke fits that description to me.

I think Season 4 will feature a lot more Richard.

I think the Locke/Ben dynamic will figure a lot in Season 4.

I think the space-time continuum has been messed with because even though I know it's Locke in that coffin, I can't imagine that he would leave the island. I'm not going to speculate how he can exist in two places. But Jack's dad is magically alive again in the flash forward, so, something funky is going on. At least Jack thinks his dad is alive in the flash forward. I'm not going to explain it. I'm not really into making predictions, I prefer to let the story unfold but I also know that a few of you like to have me at least try, so, there you go. Reread the Hitchhikers Guide series, people, they explain how Earth is situated on a time fault. It keeps rolling back and forth over it. It messes with all of our senses of time. I tell you, Abrams must be a big fan.

I think we're supposed to believe that it's Sawyer who might wonder where Kate is but I'm skeptical.

I still can't believe they killed Charlie even though they told me they were going to.

Has anybody read Jasper Fforde's books? The Eyre Affair is fantastic but some of the later Thursday Next novels lose steam. His other 2 book series with Detective Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crimes Division, The Big Over Easy and The Fourth Bear is fantastic.

OK, I've read the thread, thanks Jason. It's not Ben in the coffin. Ben would never leave that island. Not gonna happen. And Jack wouldn't expect Kate to attend Ben's funeral. Perhaps it's somebody we haven't me. I'm sticking to my guns though.

Even though I can't believe it, I think Charlie is really dead.
