Earljam's summer injury thread got me thinking...

Based on a totality of factors (size, aggressiveness, venom toxicity, venom injection, etc.), what do you regard as the world's most dangerous venemous snake?

I vote for the cobra. One time in middle school we had this crazy snake dude come and show us snakes. I think it was supposed to be educational or something, but it turned out to be freaky scary because one of the cobras almost got away and ran up under the bleachers. You can just imagine how upset the critter was - taken out of its nice cobra-box, subjected to hundreds of screaming schoolchildren, handler trying frantically to wrangle it... not a good scene. That thing moved like water - no way at all to get out of its way if it decided to strike.

I said other... specifically, the saw-scaled viper. Not as deadly of venom, but much more aggressive than the others listed and causes many more fatalities.

Really?!? Even more aggressive than the black mamba???

(If so - wow.)

I vote for the one you are currently standing on.

Did you know (if I am not mistaken) that NC leads the nation annually in snake bites?

In Laos, I encountered the green tree pit viper. Also found in the region is a terrestrial pit viper, Chinese cobra, Monocled cobra, Indochinese spitting cobra, Malayan pit viper, and two species of banded kraits.

Fortunately, there are no front fanged venomous snakes in Madagascar.:D

Saw a special few months back on world's deadliest animals, it seemed they all came from Australia. Has anyone seen that funnel web spider? Fangs long enough to pierce leather boots.

Had a friend in the military in Guam and he said the common brown snake (I think) is literally everywhere...hiding in car engines and even squirming inside cars, sneaking in houses, even coming through sewers....yikes! Basically they were dangerous not because they are so aggressive but because they are so abundant and people happen upon and startle them so they bite. I don't have any statistics, but do know they are a real pest in Guam.

Otherwise, you can't beat a good ole King Cobra. The scene with all the Asps from Indy Jones also gave me nightmares for years.

I said Black Mamba because it's so fast. It could probably catch up to me if I'm running, so that scares the heck out of me.

Looks like you need to beat 12 mph (http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/reptiles/black-mamba.html), a goal to aim for, one that should be easy enough to accomplish I think, especially for short distances.

I don't know about the venom, but this definitely looks faster than 12mph --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44mCYMLSkOY

p.s. HD youtube looks neat - about damn time they went public with it

Wow! Neat is an understatement.

p.s. How are you posting on DBR when you should be on the 5 South with an MLT? :D

I went with krait, even though taipan is more venomous.

In prep for Laos, I asked what to do with kraits. The guy filling me in on everything said not to worry. He estimated that only 1 in 3 bites contained venom. He told me that kraits were much more venomous than cobras and mambas. He let me know that if I didn't soon go into paralysis after a krait bite, not to worry about it. There'd be nothing anyone could do about me after such a bite.

Kraits were particularly troubling as I was looking for nocturnal primates; kraits are nocturnal as well.

Aside from snakes, leopards and tigers were also high on my danger list.

Again, I prefer working in Madagascar.:)
