Is that Charleston? It looks very familiar, and I'm going to dig through my Flickr account to see if I can pull up a picture of that...

I believe that's on the Campus at South Carolina, isn't it? (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

The only way I remembered...

My dad is an SC grad, and has a picture of that statue (Or I'm pretty sure it's that statue...lol) in his office. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me though.

The have cannons in Charleston in the park area, so it could be there. Charleston and Greenville are the only towns in SC worth visiting.

I'm not sure if you're overrating Greenville or underrating the rest of the state. Probably both.

Nonetheless, I am certain that it's not worth risking the rest of your career for a chance to live in Columbia.

I've been to Columbia, Aiken, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Greenville, Charleston, Spartanburg, Gaffney and a couple of other places in the state. I felt most comfortable in Greenville and Charleston, the rest is redneck heaven. We went to visit my brother in law in Aiken right after the 9-11 attacks and the good citizens of Aiken were flying the stars n bars half staff. I didn't see it anywhere in NC at the time (though its entirely possible someone in the eastern part of the state would do that as well).

Easssyyyyyy. I've lived in Myrtle Beach for 17 years now, and I love it here. It may be a tourist trap, but not all of it. It's a great place to live from September until March. :D

A few midsize cities in the southern US, like Winston Salem and Greensboro here have taken their queues from Greenville SC for revitalizing their downtown in an attempt to appeal to younger people to stay in the cities.

Myrtle Beach is also doing it. (http://www.marketcommonatmyrtlebeach.com/) Transforming most of the old Air Force base into a somewhat-downtownish type area. The transformation itself looks amazing so far, I don't recognize any of it when I drive through.

Just what Myrtle Beach needs, more tourists.

I forgot to respond to this. I've spent a fair amount of time in Aiken, and that doesn't strike me as representative at all. I certainly wouldn't describe it as any more of a "redneck heaven" than any other town that size in South Carolina, or North Carolina for that matter.

Hmm, didn't know they're also called that in SC. I had heard GVegas referring to Greenville, NC and KVegas for Kernersville. There is nothing to love about downtown GVegas(NC) or KVegas...

No Fayetteville? Columbia is basically like if Fayetteville were the capital of North Carolina. Flat, hot, humid, overrun with pine trees, and around 100K people in the city limits.

Please tell me Dukies still go to Myrtle Beach between final exams and graduation at the end of each year. Its been 20 years since I graduated and did the annual trip to (North) Myrtle Beach but, to me, that alone is one reason to celebrate South Carolina.

You every been to Fayetteville, or any city with a major military base? Columbia isn't great, but its better than Fayetteville. You must have missed the extra special edition of Star Wars where Obi Wan Kenobi says "Mos Eisley...never will you find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy, but hey, its not Fayetteville"
Take a drive down there and see for yourself, and then go visit Jacksonville for good measure. Military towns can be sketchy places.

I've never been to either cities, but from what I hear from a friend of mine there, Columbia has a huge gang problem (at least that's what I gathered from articles from http://www.thestate.com/ he keeps sending me)

As of 2004, yes. Which reminds me, no booze on Sundays = strike against SC :D

Not that anyone here really cares, I am sure, but the South Carolina photo is of the part of the Campus that is called The Horseshoe. The Horseshoe was the original campus of the University. It really is pretty and I spent a lot of time sitting under those trees many years ago.

South Carolina is a beautiful and diverse state. There is a lot to like about the state, but not much at all to like about basketball at South Carolina. Basketball died there, IMO, when SC dropped out of the ACC. Basketball was quite healthy there in the late 60s and beginning of the 70s.

I have a great Alex English story, but I can't share it here. :D

I live in SC, not too far from Greenville. In the last 20 years they have done some amazing things there. They had a crummy little stream with a pipeline though it, running by some rundown stores. They cleaned up the stream, got rid of the stores, and built an elaborate pedestrian bridge over the falls in the stream. It is spectacular, and now builders are putting up condos overlooking the falls and the stream. Talk about turning a negative into a positive -- absolutely amazing. The whole downtown area has benefitted from like thinking.
Now, if you want to talk about Columbia, well that is an entirely different story.

We have booze on Sundays now! Even available for sale in stores, not just restaurants. (At least we do in Horry & Georgetown county. I'm actually not positive if it's a state law or not.

I agree about downtown Greenville...it's gorgeous in that area, now. My aunt actually owns a salon downtown, it's helped her business tremendously.
