Does anybody know of any good Celtic rock albums/artists? I have a friend who is into that type of music and would like to get him some for his upcoming birthday. Unfortunately I don't know where to start looking!
Thanks in advance.

Pulled out my ipod to answer this question. :)
I have the following bands noted on my ipod both of which are fairly traditional Celtic bands. Not sure I, Tilly, would classify them as rock:
Alton
Albannach - this band is primarily a pipes and drum band, their music is awesome!

I really enjoy Great Big Sea, with "Rant and Roar" as an album in my collection.
It's celtic rock with a little more focus on the *rock,* but they can do a chanty as good as the next band at the ceiligh (sp?)

Great Big Sea aren't so much Celtic (as in Scots and Irish Celtic) as they are eastern Canadian Celtic. That being said, I've seen them a few times at various festivals and they are quite good.

I've heard good things about Enter the Haggis.

Try a band called Iona. They had several albums from the mid to late 90's. They lean more to the rock side of Celtic music.

Dropkick Murpheys!!
As a Red Sox fan, I second this. At my workout today, I was asked who I was listening to on my I-Pod and when I answered the Dropkick Murpheys I was met with puzzled looks. Great stuff.

Pardon my ignorance, what is the relationship between the Sox and the Dropkick Murpheys?

They've become the unofficial band for the Sox. Their song Tessie was a remake of an old song played the year the Sox first won the World Series..The new Tessie was released before the 04 WS and is now played at home games at Fenway...

Correct--the Murphy's IIRC were even in the parade to welcome the Sox home. They may not be "real" Celtic rock, but they do rock.

Is this the group that one of the Sox was dancing to? I can't remember which player, Papelbon perhaps.

Flogging Molly.
I think they're from LA, but they're awesome. And I think they just had a CD released last week.

I love the Dropkick Murphys! Don't know if you can find anything, or if they still exist as a band, but the Drovers out of Chicago are pretty cool. They were in the movie "Backdraft" in the 90's.

Gaelic Storm if you want to go Irish, Mother Grove for a more Scottish sound. Both are a blast in concert.

I like the Saw Doctors. They have a great live album - Live in Galway.

Celtic Frost.
I'm pretty sure the original poster would be shocked if he went looking for Celtic music and ended up listening to Celtic Frost!

Dropkick Murpheys!!
Dropkick Murphy's is a great bar!!
It is located down a back alley in the Old Town in Edinburgh. Last time was in Edinburgh I couldn't sleep (hadn't adjusted to the time difference yet) so I went looking for something to do. I walked into Dropkick Murphy's at 4am (yes, you read that correctly - bars in Britain can stay open 24 hours a day if they want) and the place was 3/4 full. I had a great time.
