Apparently Phoenix and San Antonio played one game where they wore jerseys with team names written "Los Suns" and "Los Spurs"... Wow, I mean, wow. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problems with the NBA reaching out to the Hispanic communities, but they just put LOS before the team names? That's just uncreative and lazy...

Shouldn't it be Los Soles and Los Espuelas?

I think that when referring to a team or company, they keep the name the same regardless of whether or not the words translate. I.E. Blue Devils is still Blue Devils, not "diablos azules".

Interesting. I've never taken Spanish, but I clearly remember in high school seeing some graffiti on a Portland building that said: "Viva los Blazers!"

Yeah! I always love it during baseball season when S.F. pulls out their Gigantes uniforms.
PS: and no, Barry never wore "Cabeza gigante" on his jersey.

Clearly San Diego needs an "English appreciation day" where the Padres wear "The Fathers"

One of my favorite Duke hats, that isnt made anymore, was a blue hat, with the Chinese (I think it was Chinese at least) symbol for devil on the front.

In terms of other proper nouns (place names) I have seen translations. For example Nueva York and Carolina del Norte. On the other hand the Spanish Wikipedia's NBA page (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA#Palmar.C3.A9s) has no translations. Dios mio, que interesante!

I have that, too.

A Chinese friend of mine pointed out that it's also the character (gui/gwei) they use for a derogatory term* for white (bak gwei) or black (hak gwei) person (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gweilo)... way to go, hat company!
*ok, FWIW that wiki article says it's not derogatory, but that's not what I've been told...

we should BE diablos azules!!!!!!!!!
I've been calling us that for years. In high school I had to explain to a hispanic co-worker who Duke was. I asked my dad (who's fluent) and he told me to say los diablos azules. After that it just kinda stuck.
Its best to blurt it out in a drunk Mexican accent after a good play!

Nash would have to appease the Quebecois and have both SUNS and LES SOLEILS on his jersey. I'll leave it to colchar to come up with the appropriate comment for this situation. ;)
DukeDevil: In Malagasy, we would be the lulumangas!
HERE COME YOUR DUKE LULUMANGAS!!!

He's actually South African Dutch by birth, so maybe we should use Afrikaans, too. Die Suns Die!
