"Because it was there." One of the greatest quotes ever.

Sad news, but what a guy! I hope the folks at the podcast "The Rest of Everest" do some sort of tribute. They've really caught the spirit of Everest in their video podcast.
Cheers,

We had a question at Team Trivia a few weeks ago about the New Zealand Five-dollar note...and Sir Edmond Hillary. Our team answering that question correctly won us 50 house dollars at Beef O' Brady's. Thank youuu Sir Edmond Hillary.

And R.I.P.

That quote is actually attributed to George Mallory, the British climber who died on (his way up or his way down?) Everest in 1924.

I was just going to post that same info.

Aah. Still a cool quote but maybe not worth dying for.

I just finished the book Into Thin Air and it gave me a much better appreciation of the dangers of climbing Everest. I can only imagine how much more difficult a feat that was more than 40 years earlier.

As impressive as I find Hillary's accomplishments as an adventurer, I was more impressed by his commitment to the Sherpa people, who are also mourning his death (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5juDHPPYw6v_QhZrcO0mdH4tjlvnw).

Sir Edmund was very much the hero.

Also a hero, one whom was lost during the past week and should not be forgotten, Mayor Johnny Grant. As much as the great Bob Hope, a patriot to the highest degree.
