Anybody have any experience with this device?

Hypothetically, would I be able to rent a movie from netflix and copy it?

You can already hypothetically do that now. Handbrake is a good DVD-ripping tool.
While the OSD converts the DVD (or any video source) to mp4 pretty easily, it's the other capabilities (yet undeveloped) that make it pretty appealing.

This would be really attractive if you could hook it up to any backing store over ethernet. I would like it to rip things to a network share and be able to play things from the same share.

Yes, it's easy, but it's definitely illegal and morally suspect.

Ripping your DVD to your network share is also illegal, but I'm sure you know that. (I'm just mentioning it for all those reading who don't know how ridiculous our current laws are.)

Yes, it's illegal, but I consider it less of a moral issue.

Why reburn it?
Rip it as an .iso file, and 'mount' it as a virtual drive. Run it like it was an actual DVD, but without the useless waste of plastic discs.

Media Center Extenders (like XBOX 360 + Homeserver) are your friend.

Yes, I have a 360 and HomeServer, but to be honest, latency makes it almost unusable. It's not purely network latency: it's lag within the 360 as it browses the collection. Very, very frustrating.
Also, that doesn't solve the DVD auto-ripping thing.

Yeah, that 'making it easier to rip off IP' really isn't a top customer priority for some teams out here.... sheez.
Our video collection isn't all that large (we download, we watch, we delete -- wait, what is that in Latin?) so haven't hit the latency thing in that regard. But I have seen it slow up when going through our pics; I can see that would be a showstopper with a large video library.

Of course. I'm always [m,s]ad that I can't rip to iTunes seamlessly and sync with my iPhone, but I blame the entertainment industry. Same with the media center case.
