I'm scared of cats. I mean, they seem to carry around this aura as if they know more than we (humans) do. And besides, they can cause bad luck.

Dogs don't do that. Whose ever heard of receiving xxx years bad luck becase a DOG crossed your path?

Freakin' cats.

Just that you shouldn't be ashamed, you just need more experience with them. How could anything that started out life looking like this:

I like dogs and I like cats, but the dynamics of the relationships definitely differ. If you want unconditional unquestioning love get a dog. If you need something to keep your ego in check get a cat.

I became a cat owner, primarily because I'm gone a lot and thought a cat wouldn't mind my absences nearly as much as a dog would. It's worked out nicely. "Camion" is actually the cat's name and he gets authoring status because he frequently helps with the typing.

I heard this explanation a good while back and like it for it's simplicity and accuracy. The difference between dogs and cats?

A dog thinks: Gee! This person feeds me, shelters me, loves me, sees to my every need. This person must be a God ! !

A cat thinks: Hmm! This person feeds me, shelters me and loves me, sees to my every need. I must be a God ! ! ! !

I'm very allergic to cats. It started about 10 years ago out of the blue. Don't know why. So I have to avoid cats, and people that have cat dander on them (any and all cat owners) aren't allowed in my car or my house.

Yes, so could the fault be entirely their parents?;)

Understand the issue, but I would posit an analogous situation. In my youth, I used to be able to dunk a basketball. Then a few years ago, I noticed I couldn't anymore. Should I blame those darn regulation rims for my shortcomings at this stage of my life?:)

With some regularity you read a news story about a dog running into a burning house to wake and save the family, or a dog finding a lost child in the woods and staying with him/her until help arrives. While dogs are doing these things cats are warming their paws by the embers of the burning house or eating excess food while the family and dog searches the woods for the lost child. Dogs care about us - cats care about . . . cats. Actually, cats don't care about other cats, cats only care about themselves.

Many people are allergic to cats - very few are allergic to dogs. Why? Because either a) there is a god and god knows that cats and humans don't belong together, or b) due to natural selection many people have evolved to the point of learning that cats are simply pests with soft fur. Therefore they developed allergies so they would have an excuse to stay away from friends (?) who own them.

Dogs are high maintenance and needy. They don't "love" you that's totally projection on your part. They're just pack animals.

We have an adorable two year old beagle mix and he is always "happy" to see me and wastes no time in "kissing" both of my hands. This is because I'm the one who spent 6 months housetraining him so he is still looking for treats from me all the time. He is almost entirely motivated by food and interesting scents. If we are not all together and one of us is somewhere else in the house he whines incessantly...oh isn't that sweet! He loves us! Yeah right - he just thinks everyone in the pack should always stick together.

We also have two cats, one of which you ought to be scared of. He's a black and white tuxedo cat, weighs about 20 pounds and thinks he rules the roost. The dog is actually more scared of the 9 pound 14 year old tortoiseshell cat, which is pretty funny. Both the dog and the cats are fairly high in entertainment value, IMO.

Oh and the cat pictured is named after one '94 graduate of Duke who played basketball. Only finished runner-up in the favorite player poll here though. His sister(my avatar) managed to keep the name given to her at the shelter. But it goes well with G if you recall a 1955 Hitchcock film with a burglar.

We had a pet dove for ten years. Our son's care giver found him when he was a fledgling (is that a word); he had fallen out of a tree and couldn't fly. She'd bring him to work everyday. She left us when our son and CooCoo were two or so (Steven was actually a year older). CooCoo could dribble a golf ball, loved to nestle, and sung like, well a bird.

Gave him a bath, he loved them, an hour before he expired in the nook of my neck. Anybody who finds a dove that can't fly, you have a treasure. We'll take him or her off your hands in a heartbeat if you think otherwise.

Cats make my eyes red and close my throat. Were it otherwise, we would have had my wife's cat and never would have known CooCoo. Life's funny that way, bad break, good break. You never know. Happy New Year everyone.

Dogs have owners.....Cats have staff.

I don't mind cats but I much prefer dogs (must be why I've spent countless hours training/showing my dogs) I personally would only have a cat if I were in a situation that precluded me from having a dog.

My mother has always had cats, which have ranged from very dog like (played fetch, followed you around) to the unbelievabley snooty (total interaction with humans involved howling at the food bowl if it was not full of food to her liking)

Cats are much easier to have than dogs...my mother can go away for the weekend by simply putting out a second litter box and adding a few food bowls. The cat's don't care. It is much harder to take off for the weekend with three large dogs.

Dogs are hard wired to interact with people (yes people) cats are not. There was a great show 'Dog Genuis' on TV (either discovery or National Geographic I forget which) that showed just how tuned in to people dogs can be. If you like dogs and see it re-airing I would recommend it. Do dogs love people? No, not in the humand sense...except for mine of course :)

Regarding allergies: I believe there is a hairless (and totally ugly) breed of cat which is hypoallergenic. There are quite a few dog breeds that do not shed and tend not to bother people with allergies, allowing people who are sensitive to dander to still have dogs.

Jewish guy walks into services with his dog.

Rabbi says, "Get that animal out of here."

Guy says, "He's a Jewish dog, you ought to hear him davin (pray for you unbelievers)."

Sure enough, dog opens a prayer book and starts in.

Rabbi says, "That's amazing, you should take him to Hollywood."

Guy answers, "You talk to him, he insists that he only wants to be a doctor." :o
