I just received an email from the children of the former Mayor and gold merchant of Sierra Leone, who also seems to have been a general in the army of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It seems that they have 28 million deposited in a bank in Ghana and that they need help getting access to it so they need my help. Just for giving them my banking info so that the money can be deposited into my account (seems to be the only way to get it out of the country) and then returned to them, I will be given 15% of the total recovered. Heck, for poor downtrodden souls like these I would do this for free but, as a starving student, I think I'll accept their kind offer.
I promise that, once I receive my cut, I'll throw a bash for everyone here at DBR. Is Final Four weekend good for everyone? What if I buy all of you tickets to the championship game - would that encourage you to attend the party?
Alright, time to send off my banking info and to just sit back and wait for the money to come rolling in.

Really? Thank you for keeping us in the loop on your spam situation. In the future, I think it is safe for you to assume that everyone else here also uses e-mail and got the same offer you did so there is no need to share it with us.
Colchar, just so we all know how things are progressing, I think it would be a good idea for you to post your bank account information (and social security #, just in case) on DBR. Don't worry. We're all just looking out for your best interest.

It was a joke for God's sake. Tell you what - when I receive my share of the cash I'll splurge and buy you a sense of humour. And maybe a personality too.
Unless you're going to try to take them on (http://www.419eater.com/html/baiting.htm)! Then we want to hear all about it.

I've tried to get some correspondence going a couple of times but they've never fallen for the bait. Maybe I'll try again with this one and see how it goes. If they respond I'll definitely keep everyone here in the loop.

Great, but we need your mother's maiden name, too. ;)
A friend of mine tried to write back to one of these but got no response. It always amazes me that some people must respond to these things.
Edit: the friend was trying to have some fun, not give away his bank info.

Here you go, if your contacts need it, please share with them so they can send directly to me:
Bank of New England

But really, I would just prefer small unmarked bills. Fedex works great for that!(Except they seem to have lost my 54 lbs printer today!)

I tried to post that the guys from the band who recorded that song still managed to find it but, for some reason, the filters here on DBR won't let me post the band name because they seem to think that it is obscene (the band is Faster *****cat so I guess the longer version of that word is banned despite not being obscene).

Apparently, they are having trouble with some funds in Hong Kong also. Mr. Song Li Lee assures me that there will be a 30%/70% split once I have helped liberate the $19.5 million dollars. Any one want in on the deal?
Hahahahahahahaha!

It is all funny and fun to pick on these absurd scammers (the website that asks the African crooks to put loaves of bread or fish (http://www.419eater.com/html/trophy_room.htm)on their heads and take pictures is really hysterical) but the reality is that a lot of people have lost a lot of money to these scams.
My father lost a sizable amount of money to a company that claimed it was a shipping service that would beat Fed Ex and UPS. Just at the moment he thought the company was going to go public and make him a small fortune, the CEO skipped town and my father found out that the company was all a front.
I know there are people (I won't reveal their names) strongly associated with the DBR who have had family members ripped off by the African 419 scammers. While we all laugh about it, lets not forget that these emailers are crooks who don't think twice about leaving retired people bankrupt (for some reason, the elderly tend to fall for these scams a lot more than the rest of us).
Now, you may return to mocking these jerk-offs ;)

I just realized that the jerk-off in that photo is wearing a Celtic shirt. How offensive is that?!?

This whole thing has become rather interesting. After receiving their original email I responded, just to see what would happen, and they have now started emailing me daily.
The text of these conversations is as follows (I haven't included my original reply because, in that, I called them a few choice names that cannot be repeated here on DBR...I guess they are not familiar with English swear words).
Their first response:
Dear Mr Graham,
Thanks for your mail and the content is well understood, Furthernore there are alot of
scam going on and this prevent we those who have a geniue business to transact with other poeple look like a

My reply:
I look forward to proceeding
with you in this transaction. I can't wait to proceed but, since I do not have a fax, I will need you to provide me with funds to buy one. A fax machine here costs $1000USD so please inform me how you will be sending me the money. As soon as I receive it I will purchase the fax and we can then proceed with the other transaction.
Yours,
Billy Graham
(They didn't seem to notice that the name I used to sign the email is not the same as the one connected to my email address).
Their response:
Dear Mr Graham
