I've always wondered - what made them close it down after you were born there? Did you tear the place up? Did they decide they could do no better? Did they think they should quit while they were ahead? Tell us Tbeard, what did you do to bring an end to this venerable institution?

I did try to come into the world right elbow first, so a non-frivolous C-section was in order.

Are you a diver? I'd like to visit Bermuda someday too, but mostly because I find its historical context so interesting. A bunch of my diver friends love it there, but my parents went there once and came back saying that it was overpriced and there was nothing to do there if you don't golf or play tennis. Why is it your favorite?

Just curious, why the triple uck for the UAE? Wondering since I've thought on occasion to teach there for a few years(as a bit of a home base for some travel in that section of the world).

It is probably appropriate for me to provide some insight into the conditions under which I visited UAE. I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. We left Singapore, in early December 1998, after a wonderful 4 day port visit, and sailed through the Malacca Straits into the Indian Ocean, through the Straits of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf, and then proceeded to fly air strikes against targets in Iraq in support of Operation Desert Fox. After a very long 58 straight days at sea, we finally hit port in early February 1999. Yep, UAE! A real garden spot. There is nothing there except sand and rules. Don't do this, don't do that! We left and proceeded back into the routine of long days at sea (~30-35) and then the U.S. Navy in all its infinite wisdom granted us another port visit. Yep, UAE again! Sorry, but I didn't like it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have visited and enjoyed but I'm not one of them. The same goes for India and Sri Lanka.

LOL...I'm pretty sure that's it.

I'm also pretty sure I've shared before that I was in that same medical institution the fall of my senior year on the morning they moved to the brand new Durham Regional. I must have been one of the last people treated in the ER. I only had a badly sprained ankle as it turned out, but being there during the move-out was a rather surreal experience.

I am indeed at SFS, its been a great place to work. Depending on how many moons ago you were there, I could probably name some folks you've known(Kearneys, Raders, Moons, etc) who are still here(or left for a few years and then came back). Seoul keeps on changing, even SFS is probably rather different in the short time I've been here where they've got a new performing arts center, the gym was redone, new elementary school finished this past year, new cafeteria/multipurpose center opening this week, soccer field with artificial turf instead of a dirt field. We may be webcasting the spring soccer tournament(don't know if APAC had been formed yet when you were here), you should check out the basic backdrop.

Thanks for the information. I actually was at a class reunion last year of the class of '78. (I didn't graduate from SFS, but was part of that class during 72-78.) Robert Mueller, a former teacher, brought slides and showed some of the changes. He was also just there visiting and shared by e-mail some of the changes. The Rader's were there when I was. I remember when the gym was new. When they redid the gym, did they get rid of the pink/grey and orange/purple locker rooms?
