Well, shoot.

I was going to take the 2lbs of ground beef in my refrigerator and make a big pot o' chili tonight. It's chili weather here.

But now, you have me rethinking.... darn you, EarlJam!

I think a Schlafly's American Pale Ale might go well with the meat loaf.

DevilAlumna, please stick with your original plan.
This is one instance in which I must differ with you, EarlJam. Meatloaf night at Mom's house was always one of the few times I'd go to bed legitimately hungry. :eek:BARF!

Can you gyus still get Bell's Meatloaf Mix down there in the US? We used to ba able to get it up here and loved it but it hasn't been sold up here for a few years now. Even though we have a great meatloaf recipe (this thread has inspired me to have it tomorrow night) I would still love to get my hands on some of that Bell's stuff.

I took your advice, Wilson; it was the right decision. Thanks for the moral support. :)

FWIW, I did the DevilAlumna rendition of this Emeril recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_37348,00.html). The chocolate adds an interesting kick, and Sam Adams Boston Lager always makes a robust base.

I gotta say, if anyone wants a good bowl of chili, you need to come to my house. It's one of my true specialties...three-bean chili with a few of my personal touches thrown in, made with a brisket instead of ground beef. Delicious.:D

Today's a good day in Atlanta for a hot bowl of chili. It's very moist and gross, much like Paris Hilton.

PS - I was going to post the link of Butters and Paris Hilton, but... nah.

Sorry EarlJam, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you once more and roll with throaty on this one...it's far too hot in Atlanta for chili today. In fact, I'm already waiting with bated breath for this season's first bout of chili (not chilly) weather.

Okay, I can see that. Good point. I mostly meant the dreary weather. But heck and golly, I love chili so much I had it back in August when it was 158 degrees outside. Agreed that it is much better on a cold winter's day.

That's a bit strong. I have no vehement feelings either way about the crock pot. I own one, and I use it regularly (have made quite a tasty pot of chili or two in it). That said, crock pot chili, which takes approximately three weeks to make, is no different than stovetop chili, which takes an hour tops.

LONG LIVE 'DA CROCKPOT.
What else can you load up before work, let 'er cook, and have a meal ready when you return from a hard day? No fuss, no muss ('cept when it's time to clean the dang thing!)

Edit add-on....

Wilson: I need to work like a fiend in my office tomorrow late afternoon/evening. How about your chili with my recent purchase of the New Belgium/Schlafly brew? I hope the Dalai Lama would approve.

[NOTE: His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, is spending his weekend here at Emory.]

Devildeac: Given Wilson's description, I'm leaning towards the Number 15 American Style Pale Ale ... or maybe the Fat Tire. Suggestions?

Let me know.

Chopped liver. No. Not the kind you find in supermarkets. You get you some chicken livers, hard boiled eggs, onions and chicken fat, and you don't use no electronics; an old cast iron grinder the kind you attach to a table with a screw-like vice. That, my good man, is what real food is made of. ;)

Forgot to mention, you saute (my grandma just turned over in her grave) the liver and onions in the chicken fat first; the dish don't work if you do it afterwards.

I agree with regards to liver and lima beans but how dare you question the deliciousness that is meatloaf? Methinks we shall have to shun you for this.

Either brew should match nicely with what sounds like a mild chili. If it ends up being a bit more fiery, I might have an IPA or brown ale instead.

Sacrilege!!!

Brown (preferably onion) gravy or a tomato based gravy are the way to go.

My chili is indeed rather fiery (unless I have to temper it for a given audience). I typically drink it with a pale ale or something of that ilk. Probably my favorite accompanying brews are Sweetwater IPA and Old Speckled Hen.

Ahhh. Sounds delicious. Send some chili up to NC with Lavabe when he comes to be a good luck charm for a Duke FB victory(it had better be soon!) and I will send you an assortment of ales from the Duck Rabbit brewery in return. Deal?:D

My previous reference to Schlafly No. 15 was a bit in error. It is an amber ale, "with a delightful wheaty flavor and a fruity, spicy finish. ABV:6% IBU:15."

I'll put an assortment together for Wilson. Aside from the stout, it'll all be ales.

How was the Decatur Beer Festival?

Cooked a meatloaf today, and also did a couple of roasts in a crockpot ... In order to complete my off-topic troika, I just need to cook some lima beans! Or pass by a Chick-fil-A ...

The Beer Festival was splendid...God gave us days like yesterday so we could get drunk before the sun goes down.
As for a beer assortment, bring on the heavy, malty ones along with the ales...I adore a good porter.

Seriously, it sounds as if an Atlanta-area DBR potluck/beerluck is in the offing? (sorry EarlJam, but you can't bring lima beans)

While you were enjoying brew, I had St. Louis withdrawal yesterday ... plus my daughter's youth lacrosse team lost to the Milton TarHeels. At the end, the coach told them to do their THANK YOU OPPONENT, THANK YOU REFS, GO RAIDERS cheer. Before I could vomit, a couple on the team asked the coach: "Do we have to say THANK YOU TAR HEELS?"

A couple wound up saying THANK YOU MILTON.

THAT was worth an ale or two.:D

no correction needed. We all know you do not drink chili with anything unless you have a chili pepper or chili pepper flavor in Ed's Cave Creek chili beer, which is probably the absolute worst beer I have EVER had-almost pure fire.

In today's NY Times Magazine, in a short article entitled, A Counter History, Will there ever be room again for an old style, family-run Jewish deli, recounted how in 1992, Abe Lebowitz, owner of the famed Second Avenue Deli, was asked to address an audience of food writers. Speaking after a deli owner who extoled the health virtues of smoked fish, Abe began, "My food will kill you." Like Abe, what can I say, my grandma's chopped liver, it's to die for.

BTW, nice written short piece. No mention of meatloaf though; I suppose, when you got hot pastrami, corned beef, and tongue, not to mention chopped liver, who needs meatloaf? :)

IIRC, the 2nd Ave. Deli closed a year or two ago-rent issues? That leaves the Carnegie(paging Ozzie), Katz's and others not-so-well-known to me. Though on a recent trip to NYC, my wife and daughter 'imported' a corned beef sammich home to me from Sarge's Deli on a patient's recommendation. Good stuff. Less pricey than the Carnegie and the corned beef was not quite at that superb level, but very good. Tongue, no thanks. Liver, chopped/pasted or any other way, not since I was a kid. Meatloaf forever. Gimme plain, catsup, BBQ sauce(KC Masterpiece-thanks Lavabe for that intro), or a nice brown gravy. Mmmmmm...

The article reports that, when Abe died, his brother, a tax lawyer, took over and operated it for about ten years until he lost the lease. The brother's son is about to reopen on E 33rd between 2d and 3rd avenues. Nice breezy article; nice story.
