I call BS!! No way that ball went a foot further than 14,100 feet. Well, maybe it went 14,200 but no way it travelled 14,362 feet.
Oh wait, are you counting the roll on the ground after it landed. If so, then I can believe it.

Look at how high Julio Lugo jumps when he scores the winning run:

According to NYT, that's Jeff Vinik's son, and IIRC, Jeff Vinik is a Duke graduate.

Yes, Jeff was a Civil Engineering major who ended up running money for Fidelity and then a hedge fund of his own I think. He has been a generous contributor to the university.

I hate Manny "I'm an elite baseball player whenever I feel like it" Ramirez, and I hate the red sux. I hope the locust plague goes to Fenway next.
And I'm starting to hope the Rockies never lose another game. Boy are they an entertaining team.

When we had the rash of greatest rock songs/greatest concert threads earlier this summer, that's where 97% of this board was musically stuck.

I'm with you, Wilson. Although, as a Yankees fan, I can't stand Boston, I have respect guys like Veritek, Youklis and Lowell who just put their head down and go around the bases. Manny, got no respect for ya.

Do they not have tailors in Boston? Manny always looks like he's wearing pajamas. As long as he's hitting like that though, I suppose he could get up there in a kilt and tank top.

I could pass on the kilt and tank top...yes they do have tailors up this way. Shocking, I know, but true. Actually, Manny is just modest and trying to cover everything up. Notice you can't see his neck from behind with the mop of hair he has back there.

Everyone time I see your avatar/screenname it reminds me of the following:
Here come old flat top
He come groovin' up slowly
He got jew jew eyeballs
He want holy rollers
He got hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker
He just do what he please
He wear no shoeshine
He got toe jam football
I should probably associate you with Pearl Jam, but I just think the Beatles Come Together fits better.

Anybody else get to see Manny in Burlington, NC during his Rookie League stint? He seemed destined for stardom even then (1991).

Nope, I did get to see my friend from high school play against the Durham Bulls in the DAP in 1989. He was a 1st round pick for the Pirates but didn't make it past Double A ball. His brother was a sandwich pick(can't remember which team)after 3 years at Arizona State but didn't make it past AAA-level ball.

I got to see him as a Charlotte Knight (AAA) a good bit. Also, during his stint with Kinston he would have gotten to play the Durham Bulls.

I did. Cool. Are you from Burly, Burly, Burlington Killerleft??
Also, I saw Jim Thome quite a bit. He was amazing and it seemed like every night he'd hit a high, long, majestic home run onto Fairchild Park below.
He was also a really good guy. One of my friends sort of befriended Thome and I remember one night Thome came out to the gravel parking lot after the game. We sat around my '66 Mustang, the three of us (me, my friend and Jim Thome) and had a few ice cold beers. Those were fun days and I became an instant Thome fan from that moment. He seems very "real," and down to Earth. One of the good guys.

I am from Graham! Saw most home games from 1990 - 1994. Yeah, Thome was a beast, even then! I live in Greensboro now. Manny was already on his way to being a "flake" when he was in Burl. I remember him adopting a little kick as the pitch came toward home plate late in the season. Guess he was bored or something.
Also, I remember reading that Manny and another Hispanic player lived together for the two months in a tiny apartment with only a couple mattresses for furniture. Manny had received a very big bonus when he signed, but his uncle controlled the pursestrings.

I have not followed Manny's career that closely but have a question:
How did Manny end up in Boston? Did Cleveland get any talent for him?
-EarlJam
P.S. Graham. Used to play hoops at Graham Middle School's gym once a week. Very nice gym. Remember when they (Graham Middle School) were known as, "The Satans?" I always thought that was funny: "Satan" written on the end-line of the court.
Also, Graham. Home to one of the best movie theatres in the country.

1. free agent
2. the same amount of talent Pittsburgh got for Barry Bonds

I was a Satan during junior high school for football and basketball seasons as an eighth-grader. We were undefeated in both, though E.M. Holt tied us 7-7 to share the title in football. The high school nickname was, and is, the Red Devils, to clarify why we were the Satans. Our gym was not the one you played in. North Graham had no room for seats, was shorter by maybe 20 feet than the normal 94, and dribbling through the "dead" spots was a real challenge.
The Cinema IS one of the top theatres around. Dolby sound before it was popular, and a humongous screen. The owner's descriptions of the movies on the phone line are priceless (if he still does them). My brother was the projectionist during his high school days. The radio personality known as John Boy graduated with him.
