Has anyone here been to Oktoberfest? I am leaving tomorrow night with no reservations at any of the tents and hoping for the best, does anyone have any experience/advice? This is the last weekend it'll be going on and I'm not sure whether that means it will be relatively more packed or relatively more empty.

Somewhere back around August or early September there was a thread on off-topic seeking recommendations about things to do in Europe from someone who is living in Florence for three months. It had a few descriptions -- and ringing endorsements -- of Oktoberfest.
Absolutely not to be missed -- the world's best party. I'm pretty sure you don't need reservations in the tents, at least you didn't the weekend I went in mid-September. Advice? Those big beers they serve are potent. It's very easy to get thoroghly sozzled, but perhaps advisable, assuming you're not driving. I envy you the opportunity to experience it for the first time.

Oktoberfest where?
Yes. That was my question as well.
On a related note, anyone else tried Oktoberfest beer from Sam Adams? Good stuff.

Just remembered that you're the one in Italy. If you're taking the train, it's probably going to be around a six-hour trip, or more, but the main train station in Munich is an easy walk from Oktoberfest. Just follow the crowds. If you're flying, the subway system in Munich is easy to use. Just hop on it at the airport and go the the train station. I'd think the last weekend would be pretty crowded. There may be lines going into some of the main tents, but they move quickly. There are plenty of tents, and plenty going on outside the tents as well. I wouldn't try to plan anything, really, just show up and grok the atmosphere.

I'm jealous.
We'll settle for Soulard's knock-off, I guess.

You could always come up my way as the area in which I live hosts the largest Oktoberfest in the world outside of Bavaria itself. It regularly attracts in the neighborhood of 3/4 of a million people. Having two universities in town makes for a special kind of fun each year.
The keg gets tapped this Friday!!!
The Wikipedia page doesn't really do it justice but here it is anyway:

And here is the official website:

I never had reservations when I was there, but I noticed that they closed the doors to Hofbrau around 9:30 in the morning on Saturday. Just make sure that you get to the place you want to hang out early, which isn't that bad because you just start drinking and enjoying yourself right away. Augustiner still has the best beer

I have a cooler full at the moment and I will continue to attempt keeping it available until no longer made for the season. It's not only good, it's great. I think I'll get one now. Ahhhhhhhh, refreshing. And no alcohol biting after taste. They should make it all year. ;) :D :p

Posting now from an internet cafe near Marienplatz in München. Got to the HB tent yesterday and thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed myself. The atmosphere is electric even though the festivities are winding down.
Took today off at the request of my head and liver, then lining up tomorrow bright and early to go to the Lowenbrau tent...
