Anyone know anyone who may know lots about Denver? What is the main industry there? Banking?

Anyone know a recruiter in or near Denver?

Traditionally had a strong financial market there - lots of OTC offerings. Also strong in Oil & Gas (including oil industry services) companies. Keeps growing toward Kansas! Was strong for construction (not sure about that at the moment.) Home of Coors (Golden) is about 25 miles NW of 17th Street.

Not a lot of banking or finance stuff. Some tech and telecom. A good bit of logistics/distribution which results from being the largest city in its time zone and having one of the country's better airports.

That has to be a selling point for EarlJam. :D

PRO: Beautiful central city with 4 seasons and dry air. Proximity to just about the best mountains you could ask for. Artistic center of its timezone, along with maybe Santa Fe. 4 pro team sports. Far far more attractive spot IMO than SLC, Phoenix, Tucson, or Albuquerque.

CON: Like anywhere in the west or south, plagued by grotesque sprawl and inadequate public transit. Like anywhere in the west, a tragic misuse of water resources.

Overall: depends on when you think the water and fossil fuel will run out and on how much time you like spending on freeways.

You're kidding... I thought this was a made-up place in South Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Bonita_(South_Park_episode))

Denver's sprawl is awful. I don't think that I would agree with either point for Portland and Seattle, especially Portland's transit, compared to similarly sized cities elsewhere.

Fair enough.

I'd start here: Colorado 2006 Best Places to Work (http://www.cobizmag.com/articles.asp?id=1175)

And recruiters are Dime a Dozen on LinkedIn.

You're right, of course. Portland and Seattle are fantastic. I just don't think of them as "the west." They're off in their own little yummy slice of PNW.

I've been to Seattle several times in the last year. Traffic sucks due to a geographical oddity (lots of water and lots of slivers of land) and really poor planning with bridge design.

You can find a lot out about a town based on what topic dominates casual awkward-silence-filling conversations between residents. In NYC, for example, it's rent and cost of living (at least it was when I was there in 98 and 99). Here in Boston, it's probably the Red Sox or Patriots. In Seattle, from what I've observed, it's traffic.

With that said, I really like Seattle. It can just suck to get around.

I'm going to Portland for the first time next week. Looking forward to it, though I'm not looking forward to LHR-ORD-PDX. In fact, my next two weeks are filled with crazy travel. Check me out (http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=bos-lhr-ord-pdx-dfw-bos%0D%0Abos-ord-sat%0D%0Asat-dfw-bos%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&PATH-MINIMUM=&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=)!

Or the weather. :D

That's why I stay primarily on the East side. No bridges to deal with. It's the equivalent of living in NOVa, working in Reston and living in Ashburn. You're near the city, but rarely care to deal with the traffic unless relatives or guests are visiting. (And I beg to differ with the illustrious Throaty, but outside Seattle proper and the freight-rail corridor, mass transit suxxors in this area.)

Holy shlamoley, that's a LOT of travel! Give me a holler if you ever make it to SEA -- we can have tech wars over a beer. :)

Actually, there's a non-zero chance I'll hop up from PDX to SEA just to add more pain to that trip. If not then, chances are I'll be visiting my Zune-toting friends some time before EOY :)

I totally do NOT wish to have billybreen's upcoming travel pattern. I will, however, be going to Portland myself next week.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about it, but if a meaningful percentage of my upgrades clear it shouldn't be too bad. Plus, this pretty much guarantees my AA Platinum re-up this year, something that was very much in doubt a month ago.

Back to the Denver area: Manufacturing weapons of mass destruction is a big industry, if Michael Moore is to be credited. I'm usually right with him on issues, and usually one to appreciate tenuous connections, but when he tried to hook up the Columbine massacre with the missile plant in town, he kind of lost me. I know -- a general culture of violence, and all that -- but I think it would be a little more profitable to look at such things as the medications those kids were on. Am I going to be chased back to the PPB?

As to the area generally, I agree with throaty. It's sprawl central, but otherwise quite appealing. Coors Field is well located for EarlJam gatherings -- you just stumble out of the ballpark into a host of bars in the LoDo neighborhood.

Awesome, thanks. That ballpark looks incredible and I haved like the Rockies since they came into the league. I could be a fan.

And while the sprawl in Denver may be bad, I can't imagine it being as bad as Atlanta. I'd put our Sprawling up against any city's sprawling. SPRAWLING? WE OWN YOU!!!!

OMG!!!!!

I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!

I was born in Denver. We moved away long before I became aware of my surroundings. I've visited several times and still have relatives in that area. One of the best parts of visiting there was going to Casa Bonita. I highly recommend it for folks looking for a different and fun dining experience especially if you have children.

I couldn't tell you much about the current events, jobs, etc. However, if you are looking to move there and buy a place, let me know, I'll refer you to a good real estate agency. If you're going to buy, now is a great time.
