This group is the strongest we've had in days!

Huh?

When I looked at it the first time, it didn't show any options. Fixed now though

You have arguably three of the greatest sports movies of all time (Rocky, Field of Dreams and Slapshot), plus solid movies in All The Right Moves, Any Given Sunday, Cool Runnings and 61*.
My only question right now is - WHO DIDN'T VOTE FOR ROCKY? This one should win our entire thing, and there is more than one person who hasn't voted for it.
I am surprised that 3 people (so far) did not vote for Rocky. It was simply a great movie, let along a great sports movie. And I don't see any obvious boxing-is-not-a-sport arguments. Does anyone who didn't vote for Rocky want to share why? The backward taint of later Rockys?

Looks like the "guilty" 3 who (as of this posting time) didn't vote for Rocky are g_olaf, colchar, and DukieInKansas.
Please be gentle with them. :D
Personally, I'm more surprised that 3 didn't vote for Field of Dreams....

Well . . . I thought it was sentimental dreck.

Well I guess you hated "Citizen Kane" too, where the most compelling emotional moment is cast in a line about a frickin sled, yet it's the moment that endures. Hate to hear what you thought about "The Wizard of Oz".

I liked Citizen Kane, but I think that it is now overrated. The problem with works of art that are lauded for their technical achievements is that the true technical advances are copied, and are no longer ground breaking. So, they become part of the canon, and are of undoubted value, but not necessarily for their content.
I haven't seen The Wizard of Oz since I was a kid, but I didn't like it very much then. I did, however, read (and thoroughly enjoy) Wizard and Glass. I wonder if J. J. Abrams will make it into a movie (http://movies.ign.com/articles/764/764210p1.html)?

II haven't seen The Wizard of Oz since I was a kid, but I didn't like it very much then.
You are not alone, my friend.
But I LOVE Field of Dreams. Schmaltz and all. Plus young Costner looks good in his jeans. :D

I liked Oz as a kid, but in retrospect I've realized that Oz never did give nothing to the tin man that he didn't, didn't already have. Furthermore, cause never was the reason for the evening or the tropic of Sir Galahad.
As for Field of Dreams, I thought Ray Liotta turned in an Oscar winning performance as Shoeless Joe Jackson fading in and out of the corn field. There are some things you just can't teach.

if you like baseball, and haven't seen 61*, you owe it to yourself to rent it. I can't think of Roger Maris anymore without thinking of Barry Pepper's performance.

Barring a strong move from All The Right Moves or Knute Rockne, this baby is pretty much in the books. I'll leave this poll open until mid-day or so tomorrow (Monday) to get some final votes in, but if we get into the magical mid-50s I may close it sooner.
Preliminary round almost done!!! Only 2 more to go until it gets a LOT harder.

Gotta agree with you, DA. Can't put my finger on what Costner's got. He's probably the worst at reading lines since Gary Cooper, but he still makes women of every generation drool!
I guess "The Sandlot" doesn't really qualify as a sports movie.....but it's still my fave. "The Jet stole home!!! The Jet stole home!!!"

I agree! If you haven't seen 61*, it's a gem. Wonderful script, fabulous performances, etc. Magic.

Jason, I can't believe you voted for "All the Right Moves", but not for "Knute Rockne All American". CNN ought to revoke your DVD reviewing card! ;-)

This poll needs to be closed so The Rookie stays in the wildcard!

Yes - it was probably the backward taint for me. Also, if I'm channelsurfing and pass Rocky, I don't stop to watch it. Field of Dreams will catch me every time - as does Remember the Titans!
