View Full Version : Music - Am I the only one?

I do not listen to music. I do not own an Ipod or have any idea how to use one; do not own a tape player or cd player or turn-table, amp, speaker system.
Occasionally I listen to music on the radio. When working, reading or attempting to go to sleep I find music to be a complete distraction and a constant interruption of my concentration.
I read many posts about music, players, life-story music scores, etc. Am I the only one that finds music to be a nearly complete distraction?

Plato had similar notions. Music was to be banned from the Republic, I believe, along with poetry and like frivolities. I don't share the view, but few things are more annoying than to be caught in, say, a gym, and be subjected to the noise that passes for music in the U.S. thes days.

Plato was an idiot. He also hated Pilates, Hot Yoga and Spinning. His only up-side was that he liked basketball and could post-up and initiate the drop step with the best of them.
Besides, the only option he had back in the day was live music (and perhaps an 8-track). He may have changed his tune (pardon the pun) if he had access to an iPod.
Now Socrates and Pericles. Those brothas were down!

I don't own an iPod because as with all portable electronic devices, iPods have very short life spans. They break, they get stolen, they get left in seatback pockets. If I buy four CD players in a year I'm still $200 ahead over one iPod.
Also, I haven't listened to mainstream music in years. My impression is iPods don't add much value with with longer pieces of music, such as classical symphonies and electronica mixes.
My teevee has been unplugged since April. Not to say I don't watch teevee -- I do when I'm staying in hotels and such -- but I have no reason to turn it on at home.

I agree. It was a downward spiral. As an avowed metal head, I shamefully admit a certain (well, great...) love for a lot of the 80s hair/semi-hair metal.

Agreed. How many times did he pump fake, blow by his defender and have a wide open lane to the basket only to have to finish with a lay-up?
Remember that one game though in 379 when he basically said, "screw it" and thunder-dunked over Marcellies? The stone backboard crumbled all over M-Dawg. Marcellies looked like a fool. FACE!!!

I still can't believe he only got "teed-up" for that, I was certain a suspension was forthcoming. Thankfully, Hercules (league commissioner at that time) understood his importance to the then developing game.

I don't own an iPod because as with all portable electronic devices, iPods have very short life spans. They break, they get stolen, they get left in seatback pockets. If I buy four CD players in a year I'm still $200 ahead over one iPod.
Nope... my video pod is durable, and UNLIKE my stupid other electronic devices, I haven't lost it. I lose my sunglasses, all sorts of pens, other electronics, but I do not lose my iPod. And better yet, no batteries to worry about, and fewer mechanical issues. As for CDs, I transfer my classical CDs into mp3s, and listen on my pod. Very simple, very straightforward. If I want to buy more classical pieces, I can still do it as I do normally. By doing it this way, I avoid listening to 70s/80s suck/rock and the current rap/pop genre.
Some of the podcasts out there are phenomenal. I choose my news (BBC), music, comedy, oddball sites (e.g., Grammar Girl), lectures (I post mp3s to go with my classes), sports (Liverpool soccer news), and video podcasts (I'm a fan of the Rest of Everest documentary of a 2003 field season ascent of the north face).
I do NOT download Fleetwood Mac! :D
Also, I haven't listened to mainstream music in years. My impression is iPods don't add much value with with longer pieces of music, such as classical symphonies and electronica mixes.
I BEG TO DIFFER!! I'm a World music junky, classic rock fan, with strong leanings towards classical. They're all on my pod. I was listening to Dvorak Serenades while shopping in Kroger the other day (beats listening to MUZAK versions of suck/rock), so I am unsure wherein lies an issue with classical music.
To each his own, I suppose. I was also VERY much anti-iPod. I gave it a try, and it's worlds better than the four other pieces of equipment that it replaces. Teaching wise, it also has a load of potential.
On the trail, it might be a problem to recharge. I'll give you that. On the other hand, one of the other intriguing possibilities is in photography ... is there anyway to transfer from a digital SLR to an iPod? That's 60-80GB waiting to be used!
Okay BillyBreen, your turn!;)

The funniest thing about this post is that, no word of a lie, Heaven was just starting as I was reading it. After ragging on Warrant I listened to Cherry Pie just for kicks and the next song to come on was Heaven (my MP3s are alphabetical by band and then song and I only have those two by Warrant). Thank God Werewolves of London was next thus healing my ears after listening to Warrant.

You guys have to go back to the late 60's/early 70's for the gems.
Carole King, James Taylor, BB King, Dylan, Stones, Beatles, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Bonnie Raitt, Richie Havens, Neville Brothers, etc. A GREAT time for artists and songwriters alike. (And....so many more I could name).

Since we were discussing 80s metal/hard rock earlier in this thread...this morning my next-door neighbor snagged us a pair of tickets to the upcoming Van Halen (with DLR) show. Three out of the first five North American concerts to go on sale sold out in less than 10 minutes but, thankfully, we managed to get seats. If only we had known that they had quietly announced a second Toronto show for later that same week, we could've snagged tickets to that as few people realized that it had been announced (we certainly hadn't).

I certainly won't argue with the contention that much of today's popular music lacks artistic distinction. There is pretty good stuff out there but it's not generally in heavy rotation at what passes for radio these days and the American Idolization of pop culture doesn't give me a lot of hope.
But. . . I've got more CDs than I can listen to, a satellite radio in the Prius, music on my computer, my car, and pretty much every room in my house except the closets. Within seconds I can access the greatest music of four centuries of western civilization, anything from Beethoven string quartets to Duke Ellington at Carnegie Hall to Blood on the Tracks. If anything, it's too easy. But I'm not complaining.

Me too, Jim. I couldn't live without it. Music, I mean. I don't need all the multiple formats (though I have several), but music is such a part of my history and who I am now that I can't imagine life without it. And I totally agree that very good music is being made in the 21st century. I think it's natural for each generation to relate most strongly to the music popular when each was young, and after a while just processing all the new input becomes a chore. Most people stop paying attention to new music after a certain age. But, personally, I like to mix the old and new. My knowledge of current music isn't quite as rich and deep as it is of older material, but it's not negligible, either. I'm still listening.
That said, this week I've been on a classical-music radio kick. It relaxes me.
