Please join me and my boys - Larry Csonka, Jimmy Kiick, Bob Griese, Paul Warfield, et. al., in drinking a toast as the last undefeated team in the NFL goes down in flames!:cool::D:D Thank you NY Jets! How they could lose last week and then beat the Colts is one of life's great mysteries, but I'm glad it happened!
Here's to the 1972 Miami Dolphins, and the 17 - 0 perfect season!

The Colts were winning until they decided to pull the plug. Curtis Painter came in and was promptly sacked in the endzone, fumbled, recovered for a TD by the Jets. He then threw an interception that put the Jets in great field position, leading to another quick score.
No real mystery here, the Colts just decided they would rather rest their offensive starters than pursue the perfect season.

I would've paid good money for the colts to keep their starters out their just so we don't have to hear the drivel from the dolphins crowd.

I don't think their accomplishment is worth champagne, maybe Night Train, Thunderbird, or Bud Light. ;-)

How about a Richard's Wild Irish Rose for a red or MD 20-20 for a white?

Cool. Glad he's stayed out of jail - he had some "problems" with drugs and alcohol back in the 80's.
I was more a fan of Csonka and Kiick. In fact, I wore Kiick's #21 in high school in Ft. Lauderdale in 1971. We had similar running styles - tough, up the middle halfbacks who didn't have much speed to the outside.

Until two weeks ago, I was pulling with all my might for the Colts and Saints to meet at 18-0 in the Super Bowl. If that had happened, I would have paid (at least) $50 to be able to watch the '72 Dolphins--with an extra zoom-cam dedicated to the despondent countenance of Mercury Morris--as they watched the Super Bowl. Whenever I hear the word 'insufferable,' I think of those guys.
Just imagine what it would have looked like: Saints fans and Colts fans alike holding signs that read, "Hey Mercury, we got your front porch right here."

So, do we think Caldwell did the smart thing or do we hate him for denying us a fabulous sports story?
As an aside, can someone explain to me how a guy goes from being a total flop at Wake Forest to getting handed the Colts on a silver platter as his next head coaching job?!?!? Wow!!

I'm glad the colts lost but I still don't understand the logic..they could have rested players next week in Buffalo and still likely won that game..and then they have a bye. I just don't see how this works out. If they lose again, it will seem like a waste and if they win out and win the SB, people will have to be thinking.."if only they hadn't pulled their starters, they could have had a perfect season.."

The Colts tanked it. If you are worried about injuries to your star players then why play them into the 3rd quarter?
Since this game did have playoff implications one has to wonder why the league doesn't take a stronger stand on this matter.

OK, obviously I'm thrilled they lost, but I didn't watch the game. The Colts led 15-10 in the third quarter when they collapsed and the Jets came back and won. Can't blame the starters who came out - obviously the second string players stunk up the place, but was the entire second 11 in on both sides of the ball? Had they never played in a game before? Were they scrubs the Colts brought in just for this game? I kid on that comment. I doubt they lost intentionally. Do the Jets deserve any credit for winning? I'm sure they think they do.
Caulton Tudor had a pretty scathing column up in today's N&O about this topic. http://www.newsobserver.com/258/story/259542.html

I assume that Manning will play little this weekend, then have a bye week, basically 3 weeks before playing a meaningful game. In my opinion, this is not good for him or the team.
I don't understand all this hand-wringing over supposedly "tanking" the game and somehow tampering with the playoff race. It's not like the Colts second stringers intentionally stunk. They don't have any interest in the Jets or any other team making the playoffs or not. If they had been 13-1 instead of 14-0, there's no outcry from sportswriters. Ergo, all the outcry from sportswriters is about their own bruised egos from knowing Bill Polian doesn't really care about their desire to write another 48 stories about an undefeated regular season. Is there great consternation every baseball season when some teams are giving September callups lots of at-bats or setting their playoff rotations against teams still in the pennant race? That's how the schedule works. If someone wanted the Colts to have to play hard their last two games to keep some sort of playoff race integrity intact for everyone else, then someone should have beaten the Colts before Week 15. So the Jets got a lucky bounce. Everyone saw it coming three weeks ago.
Besides, what's the remedy to this? Can you imagine the outcry if teams were forced to play their starters in a totally meaningless game to them and a star got hurt and missed the playoffs, because they felt pressured to make it as hard as possible on a contending team? In addition, how do you police competitiveness or efforts to win? Good teams get beaten fair and square, straight up, by clearly weaker teams every week in the NFL. There's probably a 25% chance the Jets win that game Sunday even if Manning plays the entire game.
Personally, I don't like the move for other reasons. Mainly, that I disagree with the effectiveness. Manning's basically never been hurt by game action in his career, so the chances of it happening now are miniscule. Further, resting healthy skill players at this point in the season has been shown, with the Colts especially, as being a risky proposition that can backfire. They've already got a week off coming up, and lose game sharpness there. Why not keep Manning in to keep everyone sharp in end game and red zone situations and the like so you don't come out flat against San Diego? Again.
Also, although they owe me nothing, I don't like the move because I find the whole Dolphins champagne thing from two generations ago so nauseating and just want it to stop. No one cares anymore. I actually sort of pulled for the Patriots (gasp!) to win the Super Bowl against the Giants just so we could be rid of that stale perennial. The '72 Dolphins have gone from admirable standout to loathsome parody, which is a shame.

The key to me is that these guys are professionals. Because they're getting paid a ridiculous amount of money, yes, they do have an obligation to put forth their best genuine effort to win every single game (even if the Jets weren't in the playoff picture or if the Colts were 13-1).
But I'm fine with the end result.

Somewhere, I have the 45 that that came out on in 1971 or '72. A couple of years later, the Houston Oilers were making their run and stole it, and most everyone thought it was theirs originally, which it wasn't.
Miami has the Dolphins
