View Full Version : Tiger Woods' wrecks
As advertisers flee, some troubling connections are being suggested. The doctor who was involved in Tiger's treatment was arrested in Canada for illegal importation of drugs relating to injury healing treatment.

The article mentions there are murmers about Tiger still being on pain meds when he had his accident. The hospital admission chart lists "OD."

How was this kept quiet until Tiger drives a car into a tree?
He hits the tree and then a dozen women come forward as his girlfriend.
Hard to figure why one or more would not have talked to some kind of tabloid before.

Here is what we know about the sequence of events:
1. National Enquirer publishes story linking Tiger to Rachel Uchitel. This IIRC was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
2. Famous phone message occurs ("Hello, this is Tiger.")
3. Tiger car wreck occurs early Saturday morning.
4. Tiger treated at hospital for facial wounds.
5. Lots of coverage of Jaimee, etc., etc., coming forward.
So, when did the facial wounds occur and how? Was this like the Sideways movie, in which the auto accident was faked to provide a cover for his injuries?
And how the heck does one run into a fire hydrant coming out of one's own driveway?
WRT the bimbo eruptions, well what did you expect? I mean, some of these people would lose face if they weren't on Tiger's list.

Interesting article and interesting timing.
"As a colleague, he is fantastic, the greatest athlete on the planet,'' Tilghman said. "As a friend, he is as loyal as the day is long. He is a great guy [and] has a great sense of humor. People unfortunately don't get a chance to know him like we do."

The January 2010 Golf Digest cover. You have to think that even President Obama is getting a chuckle out of the timing...

Tiger only needs to do one thing...hire Kobe's PR team.
If Kobe can get past his "transgressions", Tiger can surely get past his.

In 2010 Tiger and Elin will get back together, appear in public, and try to look like a loving married couple.
Reason #1: The Tiger franchise, easily worth a billion dollars two months ago, has lost at least 80% of its value. $800 million is a lot of money, even for the guys that read this Board.
Reason #2: Elin's prenuptial agreement is awful (for her). She stands a chance to get a sizable chunck of the Tiger enterprise's future earnings and value. Already there has been talk of a revised prenup worth over $50 million. She should do even better.

Where did you hear that? Sure, some sponsors have bolted but others are sticking by him and I bet, like most scandals, this one fades in a few months. The sponsors will come running back the moment he starts winning Majors again.
Now, if you are forecasting that he will not be an effective top-tier golfer going forward, then I can see his "franchise" losing a lot of its value. But I seriously doubt that is what happens.

Like always, I made it up.
The value of the "Tiger franchise" I computed by capitalizing a $100 million earnings stream over a couple of decades.
The loss of value in the franchise? I happen to disagree with your statement above. I think the non-sports sponsors are not coming back, unless something changes. Sure, he can get new ones, but at what terms?
I still think Tiger wins $10M a year on tour, but as you recognize, that is a small fraction of his total earnings.

Wait, really? Is this different than the alleged nude pictures from a few weeks ago (that haven't been seen yet)?

According to this report, Kobe Bryant made $16 million last year in endorsement earnings.
Kobe cheated on his wife and was accused of raping a woman. A few years later, here he is making $16 million in endorsements.
And Kobe never was the endorser that Tiger was. Kobe is only barely considered the best basketball player today. Tiger is widely considered the best golfer of all time. Golf is a higher endorsement sport than basketball anyway because it attracts a more affluent crowd.
So, if the (accused) rapist Kobe can make $16 million a year, I suspect Tiger will be able to do quite nicely once the stench of this has blown over... and it will blow over. Almost all scandals fade at some point.
I bet Tiger still does 30+ million dollars in endorsements this year (2010) and that he is back to making 50+ million by 2011. He may never be a $100 mill a year man again, but he is not a pauper ;)

depends on what the sex tape (if it exists) shows.....there was no tape on kobe, so everyone was left to their imagination stemming from reports.
i haven't searched, but i bet r.kelly's endorsement ability plummeted....
that being said....i am truly amazed at how kobe has been forgiven...

Forgiven for what? Cheating on his wife? I thought the common knowledge was that he didn't rape the hotel employee.

Notably, I believe Nike is Tiger's biggest sponsor. Nike has stood by him... and really has to, he's the basis of their entire golf brand.

common knowledge and common perception are two different things. I think common perception for the general public is that he bought his way out of a questionable situation that could have gone either way by using high-powered legal eagles and money to beat the accuser's story into the ground.
and he did cheat on his wife, and yes, it appears he's been forgiven for that.

I think the difference between "cheating on your wife" and "cheating on your wife with every girl you can possibly find" is somewhat significant. I think if Tiger had only been caught w/ 1 girl it would have all blown over much quicker. Also I think their public perception before they got caught has something to do with it all. For many people Tiger walked on water before this... Not that Tiger won't make money in the future but I doubt he'll bounce back as well as Kobe has.

I think some overly state the effect of this mess. If Tiger again wins at his previous rate his popularity will soar back to the previous levels. Some will hold it against him, most will forget.
