This is interesting, but Blair only tells part of the story. Duke stopped offering a business undergrad in part because the accreditation requirements for an undergrad business degree demanded too many specific classes to be compatible with the Duke core curriculum.
That's weird...why can't Duke set its own requirements for what constitutes a bachelor's degree in business (like it can for every other major)? What accreditation requirements? Who requires them, if not Duke?
Luckily, I'm sure HB knows that an econ major at Duke opens a lot more doors than an undergrad business degree at other schools. Not like he'll need any doors opened though...

Honestly, I'm sure people can have a lot of strong opinions about this...but...short of a nursing degree, engineering, etc...I have learned that a degree is just a degree; whatever the major may be.

Well if that's how you look at it then yeah but I don't think most of the people on this board feel that way and I'm most certain that Harrison does not. Besides, it's not the degree but what you do with it and I truly believe Harrison understands that aspect of it as well which is why he's taking a methodical approach to making sure he gets TWO great educations...

I certainly think this is true when the degree, whatever it may be, comes from a university with elite reputation of Duke, Stanford, Princeton, etc . . . I'm sure Harrison understands this. I also think the list of former Duke basketball players who have had success in business speaks for itself, as well. Harrison has done far too much research to not understand that the business prospects for a student leaving Duke are at the very, very least on par with a graduate of UNC's business school . . . and definitely better in terms of prestige on a national scale.

If I were a UNC graduate with an undergraduate degree in business, I could start as a staff analyst at a regional bank in Greensboro, then one day hope to be a Vice President of a mid-sized insurance company with offices throughout the Carolinas. I would have a swell house. Not Bill Self swell, but swell enough. I would play golf and live in a baby blue house. A swell one.
I don't see Harrison Barnes in a swell baby blue house.

See, now this might be why people hate us.
Not the team poster, though.

I can't think of a better term than "disgusted" to describe how I feel about this. I'm sure it's because I only went to a lowly public high school before Duke, right? Ugh.

When I first read this post, I thought he was trying to say that someone could have a good life after getting just a UNC undergrad business degree. Certainly more job opportunities than my English major from Duke would have given me. Then, I got to the last three sentences, and that clarified this post for me. I actually have a problem with posts like this. Thy indicate the smugness that is present in a minority of Duke students/alumni that is then attributed to all of us. I'm all for saying that Duke is a better school than Carolina, but I don't like insulting the values of others. For all you know, there could be 2-3 posters on this board who meet the description you laid out (except for the baby blue house, I'm sure).

Yeah, that was probably the least tactful way of saying, "Duke is a better school than UNC."
Let's try to keep the discussion more about Harrison, instead of a pissing contest between schools (cause we already know which school is better :D).
His recruiting journal about his Duke OV should be coming out soon, no?

This is why 'everyone' hates Duke. This just perpetuates a false stereotype of type of people who go to Duke.
As a non-alum Duke fan from non-affluent family who holds an undergraduate degree in business from a public university in NC, I am slightly offended. I know plenty of people who went to Duke that are NOT like this, and I'm an avid Duke fan, so I know better, but it's these kinds of things that the "haters" like to cherry-pick to use as ammunition in their anti-Duke rants. So why not just cut it out altogether?
Not only that, but some of my friends with lowly undergraduate business degrees from UNC are off doing great things, far, far away from the Carolinas.
Sorry to be off topic, just wanted to throw in my $0.02...

As someone who spends a great deal of time around the current Duke student population I can asure you that most of them would be delighted to land in the above situation you describe. As of now, although they attend interview after interview, few are being hired.
I also believe Shirley has a pretty good handle on how life can throw curve balls and she wants to make sure her son's bases are covered. Solid mom.

Having graduated from Duke a few years ago, I can unfortunately say that that "minority" you speak of is actually becoming a majority. Every year, the smugness factor is definitely increasing. Unfortunately, climbing the US News rankings of best schools in the US also comes with climbing the smugness ladder...

I went to unc for two degrees (but born, raised and remain a Duke fan) and I can assure you the smugness is rampant in CH too. In fact it's probably greater there because unc kids were raised to look down on Duke kids.
It's not really useful for either side when it comes to assessing the job opportunities and lifestyles that alums lead. What it is useful for is pointing out that Roy Williams frequently curses directly into the microphone on national television and Danny Green looks like a tool when he dances.
So please dont act like the guy in the Dean Dome who screams at State fans about barnyard animals and labor intensive jobs. Just simply point out that Dean Smith is the anti-christ and move on.

AFAIK, business is a professional degree where liberal arts is not. I think the engineering school needs to be accredited as well. I expect that it is more for the sake of school interaction than later career opportunities. Here's the accreditation body's website (http://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/grad-prgms-only.asp).

I think that business would fit into your etc. - people take business degrees to be specifically prepared for a profession.
Having said this, I am a huge fan of liberal arts education and think that going to a liberal arts college is a better developmental experience for anyone than an undergraduate degree in business. Another thread, really. Back to focusing on the college choices of a great Bball player...

If you can't go to college, go to State! If you can't go to State, 9F!
(Couldn't resist. I'm actually earning a doctorate at State right now.)

I don't know if it's nerves or everyone anxiously awaiting news, but this may be the worst of all 66 pages so far.
I would support any motion to delete everything from post #1299 on in this thread. The last page here has most assuredly been the worst of the bunch. And it's not that all the posts after #1299 are bad. Most are calling out an obvious fact that needs to be called out. But I think we'd be better off with everything being wiped out. Just my two cents.

Having grown up in Durham and CH, I'd definitely say I've seen vastly greater eliteness and smugness from UNC fans towards NC State, than Duke towards UNC (not that this hasn't occurred as well-admittedly including myself in vastly younger, more immature days).
And as SuperDave points out, actually more claims of academic superiority to Duke from UNC fans/alum(even percentage wise), than the other way around.
Let's leave this peculiar evidence of insecurity to those of the bleached blue.
Go Duke!!!!!!!!!! Go Blue Devils!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GTHCGTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we have it from someone who should know(2 unc degrees). I have heard their smug and outlandish remarks longer than most of you have years on the earth. Their sense of entitlement is way higher than Duke fans. I had a unc fan(female) that worked for me who bragged about just going to the front of the bathroom line at Lawrence Joel(Wake game) because she and her friends are carolina. And I agree with superdave that dean smith is the anti-christ and I think ole roy is the false prophet. Go Duke!

Uh, that was my post y'all are piling up on, and it obviously didn't convey the message I intended, which was this Harrison Barnes-related point. Let me try again without embellishment:
An undergraduate business degree doesn't take one very far in this world. So I hope Harrison Barnes doesn't choose UNC just because they have an undergraduate business degree and Duke doesn't.
How's that? Sorry it wasn't clear. And I apologize that the intended humor flopped. Still, at least my post related to HB's recruitment. The comments ABOUT my post did not.
And if it matters: I went to a big public high school, traveled to Durham on a Trailways bus for four days, had no family financial support for my college, and had never heard of AP classes until I got there.
Folks is a might touchy 'round here..... Self righteous? Self-loathing? Nah... just touchy.
