Ok, players and playettes!!!
I'm a June baby and a true gemini. The summertime is my time.
And around this time of year I really start to crank up the music and look forward to long hot nights enjoying the company of friends and family.
My favorite summer time song of all time? It's almost too easy but it's Will Smith's song "Summertime". It just puts me in the right state of mind to kick back and relax and take in my surroundings.
Supa "I got on sneaks but I need a new pair b/c basketball courts in the summer got girls there" Dave...

I get a high from days when it's bright and sunny and I drive around (not in traffic) with the windows down and crank up Jessica by the Allman Brothers. And also the second (instrumental) half of the original Layla by Derek and the Dominoes (Clapton)

To me, the best summertime songs do not necessarily mention the summer (of course some do), but are calming, soothing songs that bring back fond memories, or times when the worries were few. There are so many, but a few that immediately come to mind are:
Groovin' - The Young Rascals
Night Moves - Bob Seger
The River - Bruce Springsteen
Easy Like Sunday Morning - The Commodores
In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry
Cool thread. It should have some legs.

How about Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly and the Family Stone, or Summertime Blues by the Who, or Summer in the City by John Sebastian?

The entire category of music called "beach music" is a summertime staple. "60 Minute Man" can best be danced in the sand.

I love to listen to the Beach Boys in the summer. I also like to put the top down on my convertible and blast "Sweet Home Alabama" in the summer. Boring, I know.

How about Summer Lovin' from Grease?
Don't know if it's my favorite, but "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley makes my short list.

Song that says summer -- literally: Summertime Rolls, Jane's Addiction. As a teen in the late 80's, early 90's, Jane's provided the sonic landscape for countless late night summer drives with the windows down. I can smell the pollen and see the lightning bugs. The car rolls with the road.
Song for a summer afternoon on the porch: Mountain Jam, Allman Bros. Pour another Jack and Ginger. If someone lets the whole song play, say a little prayer and remember the moment. It may not come around again.

That's mine. Hopefully Perry will be belting it out next Friday in Charlotte.
One of my favorite songs from my favorite band.

Almost all summer versions of everything are awful--beer, movies, music, weather, attire on people maler and older than young women, cuisine, supply of insects--but I do have an extremely fond regard for that Mungo Jerry song.

Speaking of the Beach Boys. Another - and totally opposite from my original song is a song where not only the song makes you think hot chicks but also hot sun is Van Halen's cover of "California Girls"...

damn, beat me to it.
EDIT: Fine, then I'll change mine:
4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)- Bruce Springsteen... partly because I live 10 minutes from Asbury Park, and can literally picture every single line from the whole song. For example, when he talks about getting arrested for tellin fortunes better than Madame Marie; "Madame Marie's Fortunes" is still open and in business.

I like Shooter Jennings' song "4th of July". When I put down the top on my convertible and start blaring the music in the summer, I find myself drawn to old beastie boys stuff, too.

From the summer I fell in love for the first time, "Let's Pretend" by the Raspberries.
Yeah, I'm that old.
Much more recent: "A Little More Time," by John Doe.
The best top-down, late at night on PCH album of all time: Debussy Complete Works for Piano, vol.3, by Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

It's gotta be Will Smith "Summertime". This was the song they played all the time when you got out of school...and even though it was 55 degrees in Michigan, we would have our windows down and that song was blasting from the radio. Classic joint, and definitely the #1 summer song for me.
