Hey everybody,

In case you miss the post in the heavy artillery thread, Ima the younger will undergo surgery this coming Monday, March 16th, in an effort to stop a heinous infection. My mom, DukePA'sMom, will be wearing her 9F button on Monday in support of Ima the younger and family. So, let's all find some way to wear 9F whether you have an official Ima 9F button or not.

GO TO HELL microbes and GTHC!!!! 9F9F9F9F9F9F

Sending mega vibes ))))))))))))) ))))))))))))) ))))))))))))

I am out of town (Denver) presenting at a conference. My presentation is tomorrow, mid-morning. I have just added a slide to my presentation that says, GTH Micorobes, GTH. It will pop up about midway through my talk. I'll leave it up for about 15 seconds and offer no explanation, then go on. If anyone asks questions I'll tell them to see me after the presentation.

Fortunately a) it is an informal conference, b) my boss won't be at the conference, and c) even if he was, if I told him why I was doing it, he would be fine with it.

GTH Microbes, GTH!

Ya'll might want to consider wearing your buttons Tuesday as I believe that is the day Ima the younger will be having surgery.

Will await direct orders from Ima as to what day early next week we should be in full vibe mode.

As per my earlier post on the artillery thread:
"Will wear my 9F button on the day of surgery!! Keep in good spirits, Ima!!"

Meanwhile, Georgia, the microbe-nipping Australian Shepherd dog, will await instructions from Murphy the Lab tech (;)). Like Canadian Geese and tarholes, Georgia can't stand microbes.;)

Cheers,

Actually, this was first thought of by Lavabe. I just thought it was a great idea, so decided I would join in. Now I'm thinking, I will begin wearing it in 24 min., this is when unc tip off begins. I will continue wearing it through surgery day. I will be thinking of, still praying & sending vibes to Younger Ima, Older Ima and all the family.

...and actually just discovered this thread. You guys beat everything.

The news got a little worse today, so all you button sporting buddies really do have your work cut out for you on Tuesday! The barium ex rays they ran today revealed no clue at all to where they'll have to look for a leak. So the docs are still planning to go in on Tuesday, but they haven't the foggiest idea of where to go search.

Both Imas..older and younger...had a bit of a meltdown this time, but we're up and at 'em again for tonight's game against BC.

Rip 'em up, tear 'em up, GIVE 'EM HELL DUKE!

Ima's daughter goes in for surgery at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning. I vowed to her that the shin-kickers, and shin-biter, are on stand-by to kick some infectious germs, and any OR staff that don't know what they heck they're doing.

As an aside, Ima the younger and I were talking about what she should say when she wakes up. I suggested she say 9F 9F 9F. We are concerned the staff in the recovery room would think she wouldn't be quite ready to go back to her room, so we worked on "go to hell carolina, go to hell." Then, we started spreading the word that if in fact she did start saying 9F, that meant she is coherent.

Vibes, prayers, and hugs to Ima and the whole family. And, 9F 9F 9F.

Love,
Tilly

I've been asked to post updates as I get them, and have Ima's permission to do so.

Ima's daughter went in to surgery at 8:00 a.m. The surgeon is confident (he's a great surgeon!) he will find something.

Ima is holding up. Her other daughter will be arriving soon.

As soon as I hear something else, I'll post to let everyone else know.

Ima is really touched that there are 9F's and vibes coming from across the country.

Just got home from Duke Hospital. So far it looks like all your "9F-ing"has finally been the great silver bullet!

Our surgeon (wish I could give you his name, but maybe he wouldn't want me to) was smiling broadly as we approached him after the three-hour job. He's very hopeful that he got everything at the root of what was causing air pockets and infections. (Lots of scar tissue pulling everything in all directions.)

I'm sure when Sarah wakes up she will agree that this has been a lucky day for her to be Irish! The Old Professor's first name is Dan and on my drive in to the hospital early in the morning, WCPE was playing such a gorgeous arrangement of Danny Boy that I could hardly see the road though my tears. He had to be in NYC teaching today so it seemed it was a sign that he was with us in spirit. At the same time I felt all your prayers and vibes hard at work and just sensed that stars were aligning and there would be a good outcome.

Our work isn't done, but this is the first good news we've had in nearly a year, so we're hanging onto it and enjoying the ride.

Tilly met me for a corned beef lunch. What else?!

Thanks everybody, for hanging in there for so very, very long.
Bless your hearts some more!

I don't know if she was aware or not, but Tilly's visit at the end of the day yesterday was our most needed one yet. Both the younger and the older Imas had had little melt downs during the day. We needed to see that cherub's grinning face.

The days are getting longer and longer and it feels as though we're chasing the rabbit on the rail. We had hoped to have the younger on some sort of sustenance by mouth by now.....even home by mid-week. But the progress just isn't there.

We keep asking questions for which the docs just give vague "wait and see" sort of answers.

Please pray and vibe HARD!:o
Love, Ima

Thank you! I'm doing pretty well. Still eating little meals, OK getting back on regular food. Was able to drive today. My computer had crashed during the week before my procedure, but it's now home and working OK. Not a week to revisit!

Those 9F vibes were strong enough to get to WS last Friday!

Hey Blue Dress! Sooo glad to hear your procedure was a success and that you had such good attention from your docs! As we all know very well, no surgery is routine or simple. Glad yours was relatively uneventful!!!!! Good girl. I'm just sorry I didn't catch the news early enough to wish you well ahead of time. None the less, your continued progress is noted in my gratitude journal. Vibes re-routed your way now for your continued recovery!!!!

Ima II is making what appear to be baby steps in the right direction. She's been tasting bits of real food selectively now for a couple of days with no fever so far. The trick now is to learn to stay in each good moment and rejoice in it. Events of the past have made us nervous to face the future. We have to try to stay positive and keep our energy up. We get weepy from time to time. Sounds silly at this point, but we think it's probably that we're just sort of worn out.

Anyhow, we are all enjoying vicariously all the antics, shenanigans and adventures reported on the OTB. Somebody should write a book.:D

Ima:

I'm so glad to hear that progress is being made! Although I've never been through anything like what you're going through now, I did have a period of time where my life was like a bad country-western song. Everything pretty much stunk. My way of dealing was to look back at the end of every day and find at least one good thing that had happened that day. As bad as most days were, there were often lots of good things to be thankful for. Sounds very similar to what you're doing, and I promise that it does help. It isn't always easy, though. Hang in there and know that we're all behind you! 9F!

We'll take any progress Ima, no matter how small. Ima II is moving in the right direction. Although the steps may be tiny (and there may be a step backwards now and again) as long as she keeps putting one foot in front the other then she'll be up and around before you know it.

I hope she is eating like...like...like my Lab in no time :D (although you may want to keep her away from his favorite snack...toilet paper...probably would not help her situation much!)

The First Mate needs back surgery now and is putting it off. Being a slave to her ailing father that lives with us, is holding her down, and holding us back. If you need it, don't be hesitant. Have it done. Blue Dress, I hope you're OK.

PS---I don't think you can get a better advocate than Tilly. She has been proven.

Thank you for your kind words, captmojo. I'm recovering well. I can recommend the General Surgery Dept. at WFMC if that should be a location First Mate might consider.

Cultures came back from the surgery indicating a different brand of varmint to slam dunk over. This is a VRE villain. Not surprising, actually. But not one to play around with. The right antibiotic is on it and we move forward.

I continue to be deeply moved by the relentless compassion and caring you all have shown us on this marvelous board. By now anyone would think you would have all gone on with your lives......as would WE, for that matter. Thank you all.

We are pretty bummed out around here right now. But, since its always darkest before the dawn, maybe we are nearly there. We think we are doing a good job at germ warfare (no fever so far). But, the bummer is that the plumbing still isn't working. Reflux is the bad guy. She can't come home until everything is in working order. She can't get enough down to sustain her on her own.

Her hospitalization just this time has been over two months....all in a cell about the size of Madof's. We took Murphy for a visit on a couple of days ago when we had a particularly pretty day and they could meet outside. It was bittersweet. She misses him a lot. Springtime is beautiful around here, but right now it just serves to remind us how many seasons have come and gone since we began this fight.

Love you guys, Ima

Rough night last night. CT scan today, but we've not gotten the results. She is still not digesting food well and is having pain in one side and some edema still. We are waiting to see what the surgeon thinks when he sees the scan.

Could be she stays longer for more procedures; could be she's sent home on TPN; could be she's sent home on clear liquids. Quite a range of possibilities. It just all depends on what he sees or doesn't see.

Thanks for asking....and for the bump!

We are currently in day two of a three day nourishment assessment. Nausea and pain accompany her ability to swallow much of anything. The CT scan "looked better than I thought it would" said the doc. There are also other lingering questions. But, the bottom line is that they are progressing toward sending her home with a regimen of meds and dietary supplements that we would follow.

At least at home she won't be hassled by Tarhole fans. Her Duke-employed nurse yesterday, all decked out in her faded blue, blabbed ad infinitum on the upcoming championship game and "her boys" and how she hated Duke. Our pointing out to her that her opinions were not requested, appreciated or agreed with did nothing to keep her from droning on. She had a captive audience at her mercy.

I wish Tilly had been there with us to take her on!!! We could have sold tickets to that match up!

The possibility of going home sounds good even with the regimen of meds and dietary supplements. I continue to keep you, your daughter and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Sending strong vibes, too.

As for the inconsiderate nurse, wonder how she would fare here at Wake Forest's medical center where all employees were expected to wear the black and gold during the tournament ..... or so they told me. Such behavior as your daughter's nurse exhibited unsolicited might be suitable for a discussion with your daughter's lead physician and/or the nursing supervisor. It was especially inappropriate given the long hospitalization and serious nature of the hospital stay.

Please Ima, call Patient & Visitor Relations, 684-8296. They need to know about this. The nurse needs to hear from, this type behavior was out of line. In my 28 years at Duke, I worked with this group many times. I found them to be a very careing group. Its their job to stay on top of any situtation that may harm or upset a patient. The nurse won't get fired or anything. Also, this could lead to a customer service class for Duke employees. Sounds like its needed.

So happy to hear Ima II may be going home soon. She will be so much more comfortable. Maybe you all can get some rest. God bless.

PS - I hope Sarah gave that obnoxious tar heel nurse a kick in the patootie on the way out the door - or at least ran over her with the ever present hospital wheelchair for exiting the premises. :D

I brought Sarah home today! Home health will visit the next two days to get us up and running with our regimen of meds and wound care. We still have a ways to go since she still has pockets of infection to heal, but Easter is a new beginning with lots of hope that we're on the right antibiotics and gratitude for this much progress.

Vibes of thanks all around. I hope you all find lots and lots of chocolate eggs in the morning!!!

PS How 'bout them LAX Devils?!!

This is such wonderful news! I know that each day will bring more progress. Please continue to keep us posted!

How I wish I could report that we are out of the woods. Nausea rules. Not enough calories kept down to shake a stick at. Only managing to keep down around 800 a day. The docs demand 1500 to sustain a recovery. We are dreading the possibility of having to go back.

BUT, we aren't aware of any new pockets of infection and still no fever. We have had good Duke Home Health nurses three times a week so far and for that we are really grateful.

Needless to say, you guys are written up in my gratitude journal, too!!!!

All the cultures and sensitivities aren't in yet from the tests last week. So a new round of antibiotics has not yet been prescribed, but a new drain tube deep into a muscle kept her from being a happy camper over the weekend.

The doc was encouraged when the view of the scan showed that apparently the most recent damage control surgery has helped. At least there was no new infection stemming from that site. So we have a stand off at least.

She's keeping enough nourishment down now. Even had a few bites of that famous hospital cafeteria pizza with me last evening. This is all progress for which we are very grateful. So now we just have to hang in there until these remaining pockets of infection are nailed. He hasn't mentioned the "S" word (surgery) at least......yet. So we don't even want to take our thoughts there. Yeast infection is a current villain, but they are onto that.

We're just four weeks away from the first anniversary date of the original surgery. She was supposed to be back at work only a week later. Hard to believe a whole year has gone by. A whole year of holidays and birthdays, basketball and football schedules, graduations, etc, etc. Wow.

Thanks for hanging with us.

The boards seem full of folks who need Devil Vibes for many reasons these days. We've been getting way more than our share so I'm redirecting some to those of you who are looking for jobs, and dealing with losses and other stresses in your lives. We're keeping you close to our hearts.

Here's to lots of happy endings this summer!

Love, Ima
There is no shortage of vibes and prayers to go around..... in fact, the word infinite comes to mind. Glad to hear that the current trend seems to be positive.

Ima-the-Daughter got sprung last night. After multiple transfusions and iron infusions. She'll have more on an out patient basis. One more week of antibiotics and we'll learn whether or not we're home free. This could be the home stretch. We're trying to stay optimistic without getting carried away.

Happy Fathers Day to all you Devil Dads out there. Have a great weekend.
Love, Ima

Hallelujah! When competing in the mile, a runner shifts to his "kick" at some point in the last quarter mile or so. Our vibes are going up to the next level for what we hope is the last lap in this race to demolish all the infection!!!!!

I'm glad to hear that Ima FacultiDaughter is home again. I hope the transfusions give her the added strength to get her down the home stretch.

For those of you who still wonder from time to time whether we are getting anywhere, I guess it's safe to say that yes, we seem to be. She's stronger and there have been no major setbacks. Her wounds are still presenting problems with healing but there is no sign of infection building back up. A couple more days of IV antibiotics to go and quite a number of iron infusions left. Patient and close monitoring is the mode right now. Looks like another whole summer with no swimming ahead however. But, that's the least of our worries!

Hope you are all having a great summer.

I'm so glad that healing can take place even if reluctantly. Getting rid of the infection is a big milestone. Gaining strength is another major milestone. Please keep us informed!

Prayers and vibes continue!

This has gotten so long and tedious that I hesitate to keep it on the front burner for you folks. Soooo grateful for the company but, hey.....enough is enough! She continues to struggle with recovery. Her overall condition is so weakened that she is so vulnerable to everything that comes along. Yesterday she was called in for a couple more units of "super" blood as she just can't get on top of the anemia and the low grade fevers. Organ failure is our worry when it gets this bad.

Lots of good things have happened to us in the interum though, and we mustn't forgt to notice them when they come along.

Thanks for checking on us......we'll get there.
Love, Ima
