I got a call on my cell phone today with a computer voice saying it was from the state credit union or something like that, and that my credit card had been suspended due to suspicious activity and that I should press a button to talk to them and "re-activate" the card. I assumed it was a scam and hung up. For kicks, I called the number back and got a yoga studio. Should I report this? Who would I report it to? It's a 214 number, which I assume is Dallas, TX. I live near DC. Do I call my local police? How are they going to go after somebody in Dallas?

Call the bank number listed on the back of your credit card. That is their REAL service center. Go through their automated menu until you get to a REAL person and tell them what happened.

They never mentioned a credit card that I have, and I have several. I have no card through any state's credit union. I think this was a scam to try to GET my information. Probably fishing with a dialer of some sort, hence using my cell phone. I certainly don't use my cell phone with my credit cards.

In GA, I'd call the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs and report the matter. I'd expect them to be in touch with Texas authorities. Perhaps you have a similar office in VA.

Is this worthy of reporting? I'd just hate for somebody else to be taken in by this.

I report the phishing e-mails I get, so I would say yes, if you have the time to do so, you should report it.

Yes, it's worth reporting. In North Carolina, I'd report it to the State Attorney General's office. Take a look at your state attorney general's web page for information about reporting.

My guess is, since you got a yoga studio, the number you recieved the call from was spoofed number. I doubt you will have much luck with a report since you won't be able to find the original caller. Can't hurt to try however.
My parents got a similar call, and it was legit. Somebody in Florida was using their card number to make a bunch of purchases and it alerted the credit monitoring company. They didn't have to pay for any of it, even though the person wasn't caught.

Regardless of what the Caller ID showed, the Phone Company (nee Ma Bell) probably knows where the call originated. I don't know if you can get it from them without a subpoena, though.

If nobody reported, then how would the authorities know the extent of the problem? Please report it, and let the pros decide what to do with the information. I'm glad you weren't scammed by this.

I just got what sounded like the exact same call as bjornolf. I immediately hung up, just listened to enough to realize it was what I had just read about here. The call was listed as coming from area code 626. I live in northern virginia also.

That's right, Rose. Ir's a no-brainer. Report it. Your state Attorney General's office would be my choice.

Curious now that this thread is a few days old. Did you report it? What did they say?

I received a text message a few days ago about my "bank account" with a bank I don't have an account at. It was a weird text message though, there was something it was telling me to download. I called the number back and it said it wasn't in service. I called my bank and reported it.
