We had some kids at our school last year post pictures of them drinking. Problem is, most were only 16, 17, 18. An enemy of the kids got on the myspace page, printed off the pictures, and anonymously turned them into the school's office. Individually, each kid was called in and suspended for the remainder of the sports season (roughly 25% of the season) and suspended from school.

Be careful what you post.

Unless the drinking came on school grounds I don't think the school had a leg to stand on with respect to suspending the students from school. Certainly suspension from sports teams is acceptable (coach's decision), but drinking outside of school grounds is not a school issue.

Actually there was a contract each athlete signs before the year that says we won't drink and if we do the school has the right to suspend us. But yes, the ability of the school to suspend them was questioned greatly.

I'm sorry, but I wish the whole social networking stuff would just go away anyway.

Does anyone have any links to high quality studies on the correlation between social networking sites and workplace productivity? I already know what DBR does to workplace productivity!

I reconnected with a high school friend on Facebook. She runs a mortgage company. She's sending real estate closings to me now.

I love Facebook. It's actually been good for my business.

I can't tell you how many people I've reconnected with through Facebook that is at the very least inspiring me to paint. (Painting surrounded by artists makes painting easier). Plus tons of high school friends.
True, careful what you post, but if you're smart about it, it sure is fun.

Just had a related situation at work - someone was posting about his weekend activities on Twitter, and had no "filter" - no appreciation that his audience (whether officially following or just lurking) also included colleagues and direct reports.

These people weren't happy when said tweeter frequently didn't show up on Mondays (or was "working from home") after these public, eventful weekends. The slacker was *strongly encouraged* to find another job, and is now no longer with the company.

My workplace is relatively tolerant of folks setting their own hours, as long as the work gets done; my organization practically requires the use of social networking tools, if only for competitive awareness. The departed colleague just didn't seem to get that even a minute amount of self-editing would have kept his job....

Perhaps a little more restraint on Sundays might've helped as well. ;)

Oh man, do I second that. I guess I'm just a fossil from another age but what is the attraction of pictures of people drinking and mouth-breathing?
Baffling!

Its true, those are the only things social networking sites are used for. Nothing else, ever.

I disagree; I think they have a purpose and are not just for kids. In fact the fastest growing segment of the Facebook population right now is actually older folks wanting to keep in touch with family members and such.

That would be me...my drinking and taking future blackmail photos are way behind me...but catching up with people I haven't see since High School or college - way cool. Not to mention finding out the 'real' names of some DBR OTB folk!

People don't just mouth breathe & drink in pictures; I think you confuse the game with the playa, hata.

Here's an example of a real down to earth use for twitter in re to something that I've been following this year:

FWIW, things are REALLY fluid in Madagascar's capital right now, and I have a lot of friends there. At this point, I really wish I could facebook with some of them. I hope and pray that everyone will be okay there.

This may not have been clear when I wrote that (probably should have used an emoticon), but I was being sarcastic, responding to whoever I quoted in that post who implied that these sites are only used to post pictures of drinking and making out. Which is ridiculous.

on a related note, i love it when people (the guy from the article) misspell "retarded" in a rant
