While watching the game last night at a sports bar, I was drinking bud light.
Is the blue aluminum container a bottle or a can? As you might imagine, a profound discussion ensued, eventually uncovering the meaning of life.

Bottles and cans and just clap your hands... and just clap your hands.
(Sorry, I had to do that. I don't actually drink beer.)

I can't help but think that this thread should be in either the "Ycch, Beer" or "Ymm, Pastrami" thread.;):D:)
So Fish, what IS the meaning of life?:o
This is an easy one. I've seen the aluminum bottle for other brews, including Iron City. It is definitely a bottle, since it has a separate cap. The cap can be either twistie or require a church key to open - doesn't matter. Using aluminum doesn't make it a can; bottles can be made out of glass, plastic, and now aluminum. QED.
So here's my counter-question - what's the difference between a bottle and a jar? Both have lids, and can be made out of plastic or glass. (let's set aside aluminum for now). For those of us with a certain disregard for ettiquette, it is possible to drink out of either, so that's not a significant difference...

Sweet tea in a Mason jar is one of my favorite drinks.

I believe it has to do with the circumference size at the opening of the container, perhaps in relation to the size of the drinker's mouth. Jar tops usually have a larger circumference. They have a wider mouth.
But don't quote me on it. I'll defer to Fish80 on this one.;)

Merriam-Webster doesn't mention the cap.
1 a: a rigid or semirigid container typically of glass or plastic having a comparatively narrow neck or mouth and usually no handle b: a usually bottle-shaped container made of skin for storing a liquid
Note that the bottle is typically glass or plastic, not aluminum.
While possessing the characteristic narrow neck, the aluminum containers are allowed in places where bottles are not.
I'm very curious about definition b: made of skin? Non-human animal skin I presume.

I like your explanation of why it is a bottle. The difference between a jar and a bottle is the size of its mouth. Think ketchup vs mustard - a bottle :) vs a jar :D

Unless you get a squeeze container of each. Then what do you have?

Two squeeze containers? ;)
Do they have narrow necks? Then as long as they are made of glass or plastic or skin they are bottles. Squeeze bottles.

Good Answer!
Ketchup in a plastic container is still a ketchup bottle. For some reason, mustard in the taller plastic containers is still a mustard jar to me. No one said humans were logical.

You can't make the smilies bigger. I wonder if larger smilies will appear more Rapunzelian. (;) to throaty).
Thanks to your explanation of the meaning of life, I will use 42 in my next lottery tickets.
