We have a few thread looking for pet name suggestion, and the favorite bands thread got me thinking about where did you get the names of your pets from. My wife named her dog Gracie, for no other reason than she liked the name and picked it out of the air. I named my dog Xiola, from the Jane's Addiction song "Three Days". Our cat is named CheapShot because he suckers you into petting him, then he attacks you. Where does your pet's name come from?

Cheapshot is an awesome pet name...We got our dog JJ right after the end of the 06 season...

I once had a cat named Duke. Do I need to explain how I thought of that name?

I have 2 cats, Milo the gray psychotic kitty with serious "issues." He doesn't like to be spoken to. Molly is our tuxedo kitty who rarely makes a sound. Finally, Milly is our golden retriever/chow mix who is mostly sweet but occasionally goes chow. When the chow takes over, she becomes so ashamed of herself

The funny thing is that we owned our pets before meeting each other and they just happen to all have "M" names.

We named our two dogs girls names that we liked but didn't think we'd use for daughters of our own. Mia and Maggie. Mia was born during the Sydney Olympic games in 2000, so we almost named her Sydney. But then we had thoughts of the movie Scream and couldn't do it.

Our dog was already named when we got her (adopted from the animal shleter). She was named Loki. She was named after a Norse god (I looked it up after we got home).

. . . connected with fire and magic, and can assume many different shapes (horse, falcon, fly) . . . crafty and malicious, but is also heroic.

The name fits.

Not yet got her, but thinking I will name my new puppy, a black lab mix.......Houston, after my hometown. Either that or Kenji, which I found on the web somewhere and just like the way it sounds, plus I could go K for short. All this is something I'm sure I'll update my other post with, just met the puppy today.

I honestly emailed my family & friends and had a Name the Kitty contest. Chloe was the winner, though Satan (in hindsight) was more appropriate.

I have a pug-niece named Maggie!

She's an adorable smooshie-face. :D

Krauder (see Avatar) is named after a character from a 1950's sci-fi radio program. It sounds weird, but the character was this ruthless-to-the-point-of-hilarious business tycoon. My BF at the time, and I laughed at all this guy's lines, and quoted them frequently.

Now, I explain Krauder to be more like "crowd-her," as in, he likes to push up against you - it's true, he does, but that's not the reason for his name.

We have 3 Beagles now- two flowers Daisy and Lily. Buddy was a rescue from the woods with 300 ticks. Our Yellow Lab r.i.p. was born around the first Batman movie. "Keaton" was a great friend and I miss him daily. By the way there were 5 three dog nights during our power outtage ice storm!

I made mine up and named my Brittany Addie Girl. I liked the sound of it and made up a little ditty to sing to her.

I had already 'ordered' my standard poodle...one of my two old guys (also standard poodles) had passed away (the one that hated puppies) a month after we lost him, and the day we found out the breeding 'took' my other standard was diagnosed with Lymphoma - as soon as I heard the bad news I told my husband the puppy would be Dylan...as in Dylan Thomas as in "Do not go gently into that good night" his registered name is Asmirs Don’t Go Gently.

Wizard was a ‘J’ litter, I needed a J in the name – as an 8 week old puppy he had huge ears that met a the top of his head at a point…like a wizard’s hat…so we have Bilgays Just a Kind of Magic aka Wizard

Jester’s name isn’t because he’s a joker (which he is) it actually from Top Gun (trying to invoice speed for agility – it worked!) He is Brilon’s Turn and Burn

My grandmother named kitty #1, Katie. Figured I might as well call her Katie as I knew she would. I miss my grandmother. Cat #2 is named Spencer as I'm a Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy fan, and wanted to name the second cat a name that would go with Katie. Cat #3 was named Moneypenny as well, duh!!!, I'm a Bond fan. All cats going forward will be named after Bond characters as I'd some day like to call my house: Tilly's Pu$$y'$ Galore.

Do you have a lot of "Hey, Pancho" - "Si, Cisco?" conversations with your little ones?

I have Septimus and Allegra. They were named before I adopted them as kittens. Septimus is named after Virginia Woolf's character in Mrs Dalloway. Allegra is a play on the musical term, allegro.

It's also an anti-allergy drug, which would provide a little irony to anyone allergic to cats.

Terry Holland (former UVA coach) named his puppy "Dean Smith" because it whined so much. (http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1024908/index.htm)

Reading further down in the same article, Coach K's dogs are (were?) Cameron and Defense.

This thread definitely needs pix to go with the names. Maggie is on the left and Mia on the right. This is during the "snowstorm" we had in Durham a few weeks ago.

ETA: Yes I put my dogs in sweaters, and no I'm not embarrassed by it.

Belle is my 13 year old beagle, named by my daughter after a character from Beauty and the Beast.

Kayla is my 9 month old chocolate lab. After considering a lot of names, we narrowed it down to Cara or Kayla. Since a family friend is named Carrie, we decided to go with Kayla.

The name Kayla has a rich history, particularly Arabic, Irish, and Hawaiian.

Absolutely. Now just let me calculate the rate of heat transfer from a dog's body at 38 C and an ambient temperature of about negative 3 C ....

My screen name "Camion" was chosen in deference to my cat who liked to help with the typing, full name "Camion de Sable". The kit was a birthday gift from my friends Lori and Sandy. We all worked for a French company at the time so I settled on a bi-lingual, multi-national pun for the name. I used to love irritating my French colleagues with my bad French.

I now have another cat named "Boomer." He got that partially from the way he tore through the house (sonic boom) and partially from the way he always came back to me to check in (boomerang). He's a talented kitten and taught me to to play frisbee (http://eweb.furman.edu/~wshep/Media/boomer-game.avi) with him.

My cat's name is Genghis...people like the name. It started off as "Khan" (from the jungle book's Sher Khan) and then eventually it came to Genghis from that. A past kitty's name was Kimba, he was great. He was all white, like from the old TV cartoon, Kimba the white lion (not sure if anyone here has ever seen that back in the day)

3 of my favorite characters are/were:

1. Former Sooners and Hawks point guard with the smooth and breezy game
2. Former Mets center fielder with the old man walk and great in the clutch
3. Streetwise protagonist in one of my favorite movies ever, Do the Right Thing

So the labradoodle had to be named Mookie.

We are both off: Per IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042093/quotes)
it was said at the end of the show, after a corny joke: "Oh, Pancho" "Oh, Cisco".

Wikipedia agrees. not that I would quibble . . . :D

(Memories are a strange thing.)
