Okay, outside of stuff that happened in the Triangle, what was the WORST sports story of 2008?

Eight Belles was a tragedy. Clemens became a joke. Brady - football injuries happen. Farve - what makes it bad? T.O.? He's having an off year. Chelsea vs ManU in CL- one has to care for it to register.

"Farve"? Gee, we had HOW many threads going on that one? And how many of those threads spelled it "Farve?";)
T.O.: Speaking up for his QB, then some of his latest routines...
Chelsea vs. ManU: John Terry's PK moment in the most popular sport around the world... UGH!!
Oh sure, I could have put down a few disgraced athletes caught doping. And there's also Kobayashi's "reversal" in the pastrami-eating, err, hot dog eating contest in Coney Island.

You're missing Michelle Wie's miserable year, including another sad stab at a men's tour event.

Ummm- Tim Donaghey?!?!? We are talking about a ref fixing games (perhaps). That is the hum-dinger of all sports scandals.

Just thought of another.
Plaxico shoots himself and his career in the leg.

How about that dude that was going to break the free fall speed record and built up the hype for more than a year, only to have his balloon drift away by accident minutes before lift-off?
Is that considered a sport?
That may actually qualify for "funniest" sports story. I still can't see how you let the balloon get away from you. I mean, DUDE!

I had forgotten about that...thanks for reminding me. What was worse was when Anelka missed his PK. How does a striker with fresh legs miss a PK, and he missed badly. Anyway...
Donaghey
Favre
Plax
Clemens/McNammee
But this year the good does outweigh the bad.

I snarfed my coffee on that one!

Donaghey perhaps should be added to the list. My only hesitation is that the situation is not resolved, and I wonder how far it will go.
How about Marion Jones being sentenced?
Look, the title is WORST sports stories, not most scandalous sports stories. The Favre saga while he was still with the Packers was pathetic. Remember his attempt to go to the Vikings? Possible tampering?
How about the US men's sprint relay team dropping the baton. IIRC, the US women did the same.

Marion Jones-isn't she a tarhole:o?
In that case, I'll include anything related to the WNBA Atlanta Dream, with former hole Ivory.
I think the Jones thing gets included because of its ties to larger sports & drug investigations.

Worst may have different meanings to many people here...perhaps a ruling by the judges would clarify everything? Oh, maybe in that case Marion Jones is the worst story of the year.

I didn't think about the fact that I nominated the Lions while having an avatar of Mighty Aslan! Maybe he'll play for them against Green Bay.
How about the BCS? Oh wait, it's the same story every year.

I LOVE #9 on the list.
FWIW, here's the TO clip from earlier this year:

You know, maybe Adam/Pacman Jones should be on the list.

#30 is pretty good.
Criminal Mastermind of the Century:
Stephon Marbury. To steal tens of millions of dollars in plain sight is a larcenous achievement that dwarfs anything Capone, Lanksy or Dillinger ever pulled off.

Super Bowl "upset" when the Giants ended the Patriots' bid for a perfect seasonm especially after the media build up.
2008 Olympics.... the dropping of the Baton
But the worst, IMHO, was the Brett Favre deal. What a joke!

He was #1 on FoxSports' list. Happily, I had totally forgotten about him until I saw his mention as worst of the worst.

Well, at least the Tour de France didn't pop up on many "worst" lists this year.;)
And next year, cycling will have ... the return of Lance.

I really dislike "Starbury" as a long-time NYK fan. He's selfish and does NOT make his teammates better. That being said, however, the KNICKS traded for him and gave him that contract. They then decided he was not the guy for Coach D's system. Should Marbury have just given up the money? I sure as heck wouldn't have. He's not stealing the money - Dolan flushed it down the toilet.
