mrsallenmurray and I will be traveling to Oahu in early January. We will be speding four nights in Waikiki and two nights on the North Shore. Any dining reccomendations? I'm not having any trouble finding reccomendations on upper end places to dine, but we are more interested in local/inexpensive/unique places to eat.

I look forward to reading about your experience as I'm going to Oahu and Hawaii in late April/early May.

Never been there so I can't help. My dad and stepmom will be there at the same time though, so if you see them, say hi.

I'll be working ;) the first couple of days we are there. That is why we have to be in the city. However, I have made reservations at a B&B on the North Shore (Haleiwa) for our last two days. I'll give you a report on that place (both the B&B and the North Shore) when I return.

The North Shore in January equals, "Surfs Up." I lived in Hawaii from 79 - 82 so any local restaurant knowledge I once had is long forgotten. However, I've visited a couple of times since and downtown Honolulu/Waikiki has all the standard places such as Outback Steakhouse or The Old Spaghetti Factory. I hope you enjoy the trip and don't miss out on an opportunity to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. It is a truly touching experience.

Bob, my primary reason for going to Oahu is to see the memorial. Do you know the name of the tour group that takes you to the USS Arizona, the cemetery, and I think one other place, though I may be wrong?

I'm not familiar with the tour group. It is easy to visit the Arizona Memorial. The Visitor's Center is just past (West of) the entrance to Pearl Harbor Naval Station. There is plenty of parking if you intend to rent a car but you can also access the Center via the public bus from downtown. From the Visitor's Center, you will be ferried to the actual USS Arizona Memorial courtesy of the NPS and U.S. Navy.

I've never been to Hawaii, but I can never resist an opportunity to Google. The link below sounds like the tour you're looking for and it's recommended by some people on trip advisor.

I have a great idea! Send me out there a few days before you go, and I'll scout all the restaurants in the area and then make sure that you and mrsallenmurray get the best seats in all of the unique restaurants in the area.

:D

Seriously, have a great time. I expect a full report when you return.

I ate at Haleiwa Joe's Seafood back in '01. It was OK. The food wasn't that special but the view of the harbor was great. I was told that is the spot where Baywatch Hawaii was recorded for TV. They have a nice outdoor dining area.

Most of the customer traffic was going to Jameson's, across the street. http://www.restauranteur.com/jamesonshawaiicom/jamesonshaleiwa.htm

L&L Drive-In is probably what locals consider cheap local eats (other than McDonald's), and it's not too bad, especially if you like macaroni salad...it's included with all you order. For my opinion, stay away from Kalua Pork. This is extremely nasty and not worthy of prosecution. L&L's are everywhere. The best option is if you have anyplace to stay that has an efficiency type lodging where you can prepare meals in your room. You would be surprised to see many food prices at Sam's Club on par with prices around here, but not at Safeway. (milk in 2001 was near $7.00/gal)

Rent a car. Get out and about. Stay away from H1 highway at rush hour! You'll see plenty of interesting places that will catch your fancy. If you want to get away from people, you'll like the North Shore. Watch the sunset at the famous Pipeline in Sunset Beach, aptly named.

Honolulu city is, if I'm not correct I'm probably close, the 10th largest city in the US. That said, it has all the same troubles as all other large urban areas. Visit the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri docked nearby. My late brother was a tour guide on the Mizzou. It's a fascinating history. Aloha Stadium is diagonally across the highway. They have a unique flea market there during the week. Drive up to Punchbowl Cemetery, The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, if only to see Lady Columbia.

I could go on and on but getting out yourself will give you a much better, paced tour of a lot there is to see, taste (Hawaiian pineapple is definitely the greatest in all the world), feel and smell.

Have a great trip. I've never been to Hawaii. I guess you could say it is on my bucket list.

Hey Allen! Did I, or any other DBR'ers, win anything in that auction we signed up for?

Oahu comes in 3rd for me (after Kawai & Maui),but my favorite thing to do on Oahu was to bike Diamond Head. It's a trek both ways, but there used to be a bus/car that would take you and your bikes to the top so you could bike down. Great fun!

As for restaurants, I always ask the locals. But I'm partial to 'little dives' that most tourists don't consider.

Have a GREAT trip!! Aloha.

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. My last post was about three weeks ago. How appropriate that I post in a thread about the heavenly state of Hawaii.

Tilly, here's the tour I recommend -- the Home of the Brave Tour (http://www.hawaiiactivities.com/us/hawaii/oahu/sg/38/ag/529/). It visits all of the historical military sites, including the USS Arizona Memorial. It does not include the USS Missouri, but I think that is a tour best made on your own, if you have the time. A visit to the Polynesian Center is also a very good choice. After you have seen Oahu, the best is yet to come -- on the other islands. My preferences are Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii. If you choose to go to any of them, let me know, and I'll steer you in the right direction.

That kinda sounds like my walk to school. :)

I, too, always loved Diamond Head. It is beautiful in all aspects. The Punch Bowl moves me to tears.

Hey Allen! Did I, or any other DBR'ers, win anything in that auction we signed up for?

The raffle netted $1600 (1600 tickets sold). Of those 1600, allenmurray sold 130 through DBR. One person I sold a ticket to won, but I won't name the person unless he/she chooses to name him/herself. It was a DBR person, but an infrequent poster. A student at the high school won the itouch and another student won the Duke bball tickets - while I would have loved for someone I sold to via DBR to have won, I was really glad a student won.

The raffle raised enough money to fund all of the pre-game meals for the season and to pay for the gear for the students who could not afford their own sweat suits (the school provides the uniforms - the students buy thier own shoes, warm-ups, and sweater vests that are worn on game day - at at cost of about $200 per student).

Thanks to everybody!!!!

I'd like to echo Ozzie's sentiment. Glad I could help out. I'm very excited to read enough money was raised to pay for pre-game meals.

Let's go Knights!
