I'm invited to go to a hashing tomorrow. Never been to one, nerver heard of one. A student told me that it involves a lot of running and a lot of beer drinking.

Of course the students want me to be an observer/official so I won't have to run alot.

Any of you ever been to a hashing?

Here's what I find on the internets about a hashing:

I thought you were talking about one of these (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/util/concurrent/ConcurrentHashMap.html).

Shoot, I misread it and thought it was about hazing. Hmmm, actually, maybe it is.

We'll be expecting a rehashing when you get back.

My dad used to be a part of the "Hash House Harriers" group stationed at the US Army base in Seoul - they'd go out into the city every weekend, chasing down hash marks made of flour, always ending up someplace new, where, conveniently, there was beer for all. It sounded like a lot of fun, except for the running part. (Apparently, the locals thought it was hilarious, too - all these army guys running around - even through the subway system, malls, etc.)

I would imaging observers are there to help make sure folks actually follow the hash marks correctly? (Getting lost on the unknown course would be a "bad thing.")

I've got to think running round trailing flour behind you would get you sent to Gitmo in some parts of this country (not trying to get this put on the PPB - but I'm just sayin'). Do you drop a steady trail of flour? Or do you drop handfuls every so far?

Did a hash with a friend in DC. Ran through some storm drains, climbed a ladder, loads of fun. And I hate running.
