They put up a new sign today at the NASA exit gate: SPEED HUMP. Is this anything like a quickie?
Does anyone have any others to share?

I just spent 4 days visiting my parents in Ft. Lauderdale. The circular drive around their condo development, which has about 15 buildings, have several "speed humps" spaced around the drive. They are relatively low bumps, gently sloped. Just enough to slow you down but not enough to really jar you if you don't, unless you're sitting in the back seat. Once you stop laughing at the phrase, it is pretty appropriate for the obstruction.

I grew up in the Fort Lauderdale area and never even realized that the signs were unusual.
I think the 19 MPH speed signs at Southpoint need to be mentioned here. I understand the logic behind it and all, but still.

I think the Irish signs "Traffic Calming Ahead" are worth mentioning.

Please explain the 19 MPH signs. I have a similar one in my apartment complex. I think it's 12 MPH.

In Jamaica, a speed hump is called a "sleeping policeman."

I've seen "speed lump" near where I live. They're a lot nicer on cars and bikes (http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=19&pictureid=280):

My favorite sign ever was in the window a strip mall in Lexington, KY:
"Tattoos, while you wait."

I think the rationale is that people will take notice of the "odd" number. We're too used to speed limits on the fives, that we don't pay attention to them anymore.
It's the same motivation for why some people will schedule meetings to start at 1:57 instead of 2.

That makes sense. Thanks!
Some of my favorites from England:
"3M Bridge 100 Yards ahead" - They still haven't completely reconciled themselves to the metric system.
"Cats Eyes Removed Ahead" - Cats Eyes apparently aren't handicapped pets, but rather the lane reflectors, a pair of circles that look somewhat like cats' eyes reflecting light back.
And, of course, the Roundabout from Hell:

Vanderbilt, Tom.
is a very interesting book that discusses, among other things, speed bumps/humps and roundabouts. It also contains a fascinating section about "traffic" practices within the animal kingdom, specifically, ants and a particular species of katydids.

While riding around on some of the private logging roads in northern Maine, we were required to pull off whenever we saw a logging truck coming the other way. At one point we saw a sign that said:
"Yes. As a matter of fact we DO own the road."

Yeah, I always chuckle at the
SLOW
CHILDREN

sign - it's so unfair to label them like that. :D
Another one from a street T'd onto a main thoroughfare, such that you could only turn right - it had a stop signal for a crosswalk on the main drive, so the t'd street had a right-turn signal light, but next to it was a sign, "This light never turns green."
Always made me wonder how many people would just sit there and wait, so much so, that they had to put up a sign.

If Latta still posted, he'd back me up on this (I hope he will post).
In Burlington, N.C., there was a strip mall that was forever owned by the Cummings and Parks familes. The mall, as indicated by its huge-arse sign that eventually met its end during a tropical storm, read:
CUM-PARK PLAZA
Not kidding.

On a two lane highway going through Camp Lejeune (a Marine base) in Jacksonville, NC:
Caution: Tank Crossing (wish I had a photo)
And, IIRC: Caution: Artillery Testing in Progress
Fortunately (I guess), we passed through at night.

I couldn't believe I found a picture of this, but there's a place in LA where Artesia Blvd., Artesia Pl. and Artesia Ct all intersect. Not quite as confusing as driving around Queens Road area in Charlotte, but still a good one. Check out the Blog (http://www.stpixels.com/view_blog.cgi?user=18).

The worst I have ever seen is Hickory, NC. There you have 10th St., 10th Ave, 10th St. Ct., 10th St. Drive and then throw in NE, NW, SE and SW. You can really be lost.

OOhh. Having once lived in Hickory, I agree. It's freaky. You can be driving along on the right street, looking for a house number, then suddenly and without warning-------Dead End. However, the same street will pick back up two or three blocks over and continue. Your mission, figure out how to get over there. Will it dead end again? Try it and see.

I lived in Trent back in 1990 and walking along Flowers Dr. toward West was a row of permit parking with signs that read "This space reserved for (insert space # here)". I never got to see it but at one point there was a space number 69. By the time I got to Duke it had already been changed to reflect some innocuous combination of letters b/c the numbered sign had been stolen so many times. Gotta believe the sign was being passed down somewhere.

You guessed wrong, dd. Daytime is for work. You know, cleaning rifles, sweeping decks, practicing golf, washing trucks, tanks, howitzers, and humvees, cooking and eating, reading orders of the day, maintaining personal equipment and uniforms, downloading music, and for officers and NCOs, supervising and inspecting. Nighttime is for combat training. You should keep moving, because it's hard as he11 to hit a moving car.

I vaguely recall ten years ago passing by a furniture warehouse between RDU and Strickland Rd in Raleigh, and it had posted a Speed Limit 7 1/2 mph sign. While looking for the image online, I saw quite a few references to the added 1/2 mph on road signs.
Also, lots of crazy signs in New Zealand & Colorado!
