View Full Version : chocolate chip cookies are over-rated

The CC cookie is over-rated. Far too sweet, often made with inferior chocolate, and generally too doughy. Even "gourmet" ones aren't really all that good. They are best left to children below the age of 13.
Oatmeal Raisin cookies rule! They are far superior in everyway, and are the "adult" cookie.
The most underrated cookie? The ginger snap. Humble, yet with a little bit of sassiness.

Amazing. The ginger is tart and delicious, and the lemon creme is smooth and buttery. Seriously, one of the best cookies I have ever, ever had.

That was the first thing I thought of when I read the word ginger snap... my wife made the mistake of bringing home a box of these beautiful creations recently. Suffice it to say, I stayed up to watch John Stewart and lost all of the credits I had been building for a week when she saw they were all but gone in the morning. Agreed - by far the best boxed cookie I have ever eaten!

i like oatmeal
having said that i hate oatmeal raisin cookies with passion. absolutely disgusting. chocolate chip oatmeal = good, chocolate chip normal cookies = awesome, chocolate-chocolate(or even triple!) cookies = the best!
The only plausible explanation for this thread is AM posted 1,470 previous times to blindside us with the most well-executed troll of all time.:)

I actually kind like raw chocolate chip cookie dough, it is the baked cookie I think is over rated. I absolutely love Oatmeal Raisin cookies, but raw oatmeal raisin cookie dough is just nasty. This, i contend, is one of the great mysteries of life.

I have been waiting for many, many years for someone to have the spheres enough to call out the chocolate chip cookie.
I agree.
I really do.
Sure, you can make your own and add the chips. That's about the only way you will get a quality chocolate chip cookie.
Great post!

chocolate chip cookies would whip any other cookies butt except for oatmeal chocolate chip. but oatmeal chocolate chip has chocolate chips back and he's the king, so watch what you say! Oatmeal chocolate chip doesn't mind having raisens added to it either - but you just hafff to have that goey warm chocolate - it makes a large glass of ice cold milk go down with the kind of satisfaction oatmeal raisen just can't come close to.

Chocolate rules - therefore, chocolate chip cookies are good. The good thing about people not liking chocolate cookies - more for those of us that do like them. :D
That said - has anyone shopped the Voortman cookie hut? The make a maple creme filled cookie that is excellent. There coconut filled is good also. And for those that like excessively sweet chocolate chip cookies - two chocolate chip cookies with chocolate filling. There is something satisfying about buying cookies in bulk. :D

Cookie blasphemer. Chocolate chip cookies rock. Homemade ones are the best - the plain, simple Toll House recipe on the back of the bag is best. I prefer some chopped up pecans in there.
And as for underrated cookies, I'd have to go with the snickerdoodle.
Does anyone spell the singular of cookies "cooky" anymore? I saw it in my grandma's old Betty Crocker cookbook.

As a chocolate lover, I must observe that the quality of the chocolate makes all the difference in whether the cookies are good. The best cookie recipe I have is one for Toll House Cookies. It was a first place winner (submitted by someone else) at the Dixie Classic Fair in Winston-Salem many years ago. These cookies always get glowing comments when I serve them. (Dark chocolate chips preferred.)

It appears that the same people who extol the virtues of chocolate chip cookeis will eat cookies made of cow chips. I guess they will eat anything, and have no discretion or cookie-eating judgement. Need I say more?

Raisin are clearly the land mine of the cookie world. You pick up a perfectly decent looking cookie, presumably filled with chunks of sweet chocolately goodness, only to find upon closer inspection that you have squishy, shriveled-up grapes in their place. And that's only if you're lucky. If you don't notice until it's in your mouth... well, I don't want to talk about that. :(

Take the recipe on the back of the bag, throw in a handful or two of oatmeal, and take them out a couple minutes early. They stay soft and chewy and all happy happy.

One thing that hasn't been discussed is the so-called "White chocolate" chip cooky. I like them, especially with macadamia nuts, but really have a hard time with the naming. It's soooo not chocolate.

You must have spent some time in Winston-Salem! My grandmother used to be able to roll the dough out almost thin enough to see through. I don't have that skill, so I buy mine from Mrs. Hanes, a distant cousin.

Well, my time in WS postdates my love for the cookies. My grandmother, an aunt, and a cousin all went to Salem Academy.
I doubt I'll make any football games. I'm a heathen - I really don't "get" football. Hoops, soccer, lacrosse, etc, all make much more sense to me.
I do make a lot of day (or night, very late night) trips from DC to Durham (my home town) and back during basketball season.
(Hint - I wouldn't mind, and would welcome, a rider or two who lives in the DC area. I sometimes have an extra ticket. PM me.)

The menu seems to be heavy with sweets and carbs. Looks like some protein or savories would be in order. Did you mentioned ham biscuits once? Maybe some cheese individually wrapped like the Babybels. Some fruit would lighten the menu a bit.

Chocolate in all its forms is overrated. Including in cookies.
Really I'm just PW'ing so I can hit 500.

If you don't want to eat chocolate, including cccs, there will just be more chocolate for the rest of us to enjoy!

Word from devildeac is that allenmurray might not refuse ccc's after all. Can we have some verification please?
Do the ccc's freeze well and travel well by car from Durham to Kentucky?:o
Wish I was there at the tailgate. Sounds like a blast!!

We are calling you out, allenmurray. Stories from the DBR brunchgate today was that you had one of CathyCA's delicious ccc and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fess up now, brother:D.

Word is out. Allenmurray is a poser. He is just on the OTB trolling for responses about ccc. He did indeed IMMENSELY (well, maybe not immensely) enjoy one of CathyCA's delicious ccc today at the brunchgate. There were no vastly inferior oatmeal raisin or ginger snap cookies available. There were also no coconut custard pies served either:rolleyes:. There are several other opportunities for different cookies and I'd bet the oatmeal raisin would be good with a Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale or the ginger snaps might be a nice combination with one of the pumpkin ales:D.
Just kidding, big guy. Glad to finally meet you this AM.

I had two of them. They were both delicious. As were the susage biscuits. As were the cinnamon rolls. As were the sticky buns. As was the beer. In fact, the entire pre-game festivities were one of the highlights of my day/week/month/year. Sam said to me, "this is so wierd, you guys act like you all know each other and you've never met before". What a wonderful morning, followed by a wonderful game.
In two weeks I will be back for more chocolate chip cookies. I will also bring some oatmeal raisin cookies, along with either some country ham biscuits (if it is a noon game) or some ginger/plum Pork tenderloin (if if is an evening game).
41 - 31. Wow!
But please, no more 90+ degree games. I thought I was going to melt. And in fact, someone two rows in front of me did. More on that on the main board.

YES!!! I believe Tilly is OOT for the UVa game and it is her turn for ccc unless we can coerce CathyCA to bake again. The oatmeal raisins really do sound good for an AM (or PM;)) item with the ham biscuits also if it is a noon game. The pork tenderloin sounds like the start of a tailgate gourmet feast (gourmet gate?) if it is a PM game.

I'm glad you all liked the cccs. This recipe was the one from The Pits. I don't like it as well as I like the recipe from the back of the Toll House chocolate chip package.
I liked the Moravian sugar cake, the fruit, the sausage biscuits, the potato casserole and the mimosas. YUM!

I missed the mimosas - but now that I know they were there I may be able to get the lovely mrsallenmurray to attend. She thinks I am crazy (she is a wise woman) for spending time on DBR, and is barely a football fan (though a huge basketball fan). Sam and I are gradually winning her over to Duke football. She came to today's game at halftime and got to enjoy the win.

I think a couple folks brought OJ and/or champagne. I enjoyed 2 of them with a small amount of bubbly and large amounts of OJ as I knew what the weather forecast was and thought any larger quantities of AM alcohol would not be a good idea prior to 3-4 hours in the sun. OZZIE did have a leftover Pyramid Hefeweizen from the JMU tailgate which he kindly offered me after the game and I promptly enjoyed:D.
