If they played each other, who would you pull for?

I preferred a third choice: Jimmy Connors.;)

If? IF!!??!? Don't you remember those wonderful few years of the Borg/Mac/Jimmy three-way rivalry? Tennis mattered back then.

Oh I remember!

I should have written, "If they played AGAIN..."

I think Mac would kill him. He seems to have stayed in better shape. But give Connors a few months to get in shape and who knows.

Sidenote: I once owned a pair of "Jimmy Connor" shoes by Converse. I was in the tenth grade and those shoes were very popular. It pleased me to wear them and to show them off.

I used to root for Connors when they went head to head, but over the years I've gotten an appreciation for Johnny Mac and think I would root for him in a head to head now.

Remember Connors' comeback attempt a few years ago?

No. When was that? How did he do?

I really only got into tennis big time about four-five years ago. But I immediately fell in love with it.

This ain't no hypothetical, man. McEnroe against all comers. I vividly remember him losing the 1984 French Open to Lendl after winning the first two sets (I was 8; it was the first grand slam match that I can remember watching in it's entirety). Bouncing back to destroy Connors at Wimbledon was cold comfort, but what are you going to do?

McEnroe has grown on me through years of entertaining TV commentary. I always liked Connors more as a player because he was such a fierce competitior, but I think Mac would wipe the court with Connors now. McEnroe won an ATP tour doubles tourney as recently as 2006.

Borg = UNC. McEnroe = NC State. Connors = Duke. Discuss.

Got to go with Connors even though Mac had a much better feel for the game. Still remember the 82 W-don final, Connors with a re-tooled serve was dusting the lines all DAY, including match point. Mac couldn't believe it. No better shot maker at the net than Mac though. In a related competition I'll take Patti Connors over the former Mrs. Mac, Tatum O'Neil any day.

Neither would make my all-time top five though

1 Laver
2 Federer
3 Sampras
4 Borg
5 Newcombe

(My first post since anaphylatic shock turned my right hand into one of those big foam football #1s...it works!)
