View Full Version : The New TV Season: What are you gonna watch?

Ok, DBR OffT folks, what shows are we all jazzed about this new season? New stuff will be hitting TVs in including the eagerly anticipated (not by me) return of 90210.

Personally, not much appeals to me.

I'll be watching Fringe, that's for sure. I am a confirmed JJ fan and will give anything he touches at least a first glance. Plus, I love supernatural stuff.

Kath and Kim was supposedly a big hit DownUnder and a fair percentage of their foreign hits end up being successes in the U.S. so I will probably watch that. Life on Mars will get a look from me for the same reason (it was a big hit in the UK) plus it has a strange supernatural twist to it and it sounds at least a little bit like the canceled but still dear to my heart Journeyman.

I don't think there is anything else new that I will be checking out. I may give ER another chance after giving up on it last year. This is the final season and they are bringing Carter back and I sorta want to see how it ends. I cannot decide whether to give Pushing Daisies another chance. I still have a couple episodes from last year on my DVR. They've been there, unwatched, all summer long.

You guys probably know the rest of my Tivo list--
Monday-- Big Bang, HIMYM, Heroes, Denny Crane
Tuesday-- Fringe
Wednesday-- Daisies
Thursday-- Survivor, Kath & Kim, Office, 30 Rock, ER, Grey's, Life on Mars
Friday, Saturday-- nada
Sunday-- Simpsons, Family Guy

I haven't consistently watched a network series in years. There are actually a number of shows out right now whose premises I find intriguing, but for whatever reason, I just don't watch them. I'm still lamenting the departure of the Sopranos, and aside from that, I stay plenty busy with various sports viewing.

NASCAR on ABC? Oh and anything and everything on NBC. Have to be the company man...

I'm curious about this show and will likely tune in to and watch it.

The Mentalist looks to be USA Networks Psyche only much less corny. The show is about a guy who can figure things out based on behavior. People thing he's psychic, bu he owns up to his true gift unlike the lead on Psyche.

so, how come when I started this thread a week ago, I was basically ignored, and now, when JASON starts it, it's the hot-button issue? I feel like such a loser. I guess Jason's just SO much cooler than I. If I tried to pull this, I'd not only be ignored, but my thread would have been assimilated into his. I'm so depressed. ;)

On a brighter note, here are my shows:

House
Chuck
Stargate Atlantis
Monk (summer)
Psych (summer)
Eureka (summer)
Burn Notice (summer)
Life
Battlestar Galactica

My wife's shows (which I end up watching with her):

HIMYM
Big Bang Theory
2.5 Men
According to Jim
Robin Hood (summer)
In Plain Sight (summer)
Ugly Betty
Grey's Anatomy
Desperate Housewives
NCIS
Moonlight (cancelled)
Pushing Daisies
Til Death (B list for us, not must see)

New ones we're going to try:

My Own Worst Enemy
Kath & Kim
Fringe
Life On Mars
Raising the Bar
Crusoe
The Ex-List
Gary Unmarried (my wife will watch any sitcom once)

Because of the strike, I'm not sure how I feel about last year's new shows. Was Pushing Daisies any good? I can't remember.

House is still the only show I HAVE to watch. Tonight is the repeat of the season finale (two epis). Great writing! There is a marathon almost all weekend long on USA, and then starting Monday it will air at 8pm M-F on USA plus extra epis on certain nights. Great time to catch up if you haven't watched it.

I will try to catch the season premiere of Bones tomorrow night. Those two characters together crack me up.

Shows I have to watch:

House
How I Met Your Mother (It's HILARIOUS. It reminds me of scrubs, but if everyone wasn't a doctor)
Scrubs (supposed to start mid-season. I hope its better than last season...)

Any other year CSI would have been in here (Las Vegas, the original, or course). Unfortunately, since they've basically replaced the entire cast I'm not sure if I'll be interested.

Show's I'll probably watch:

Family Guy
American Dad
Adult Swim (But not some of those really awful shows they have on there now)

And I'm sure I'll pick up more over time. I never really follow whats going to be on tv until it actually starts airing.

Nothing.

added after edit:

Live sports and some news programming. I gave up on Newtork TV long ago. It is not that I am one of those, "oh, I don't watch television" snobs. I would gladly watch television - I have simply found it to be so uniformly disappointing over the last few years that I have simply given up. Ferreting out the few good shows is not worth the incredible amount of crap one has to go through to find them. When I look at the shows currently offerred, and the new ones folks are mentioning, I think to myself, "that is the best they can do with the millions of dollars they spend?".

I'm a huge fan of Lost, Entourage, Dexter, Californiacation, Pen and Teller, Curb your enthusiasm...

and I also watch

Big Love, Big Bang, Heroes, Family Guy, and pretty much anything on national geographic and the discovery channel.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Life. Great show with a very interesting lead character. I watched every episode last season (truncated season, obviously) and they were all good.

The only other show I watch is 30 Rock, and an occasional episode of Chuck.

Anyway, if you haven't seen Life, you should check it out.

I really like bjornolf's list. House, Chuck, Monk, Stargate, Chuck, Battlestar Galactica. I would also add The Office, Hero's and in the spring Lost. None of the new shows jumps out at me.

I'm intrigued by Fringe. We'll give it a try. I might try Kath and Kim.

We'll be watching:
HIMYM
Big Bang
Survivor: Gabon
House
The Office

MrsUsul will probably be watching Grey's again, and I'll be subjected to it.

Endless, endless reruns of Star Trek:TNG and Voyager, anything on the Food Network, NGC or Discovery will fill in the rest of the time.

The short list of the one's I'm ready to continue watching (they aren't new shows) in no particular order.

How I Met Your Mother
Heroes
Friday Night Lights (exclusive to DirecTV)
Chuck (my FAVE new show of last year)
The Office
Entourage
Family Guy
Scrubs

Man my DVR is going to be busy this fall! (and now I have to buy a new bulb for my 52 inch TV, burned out just in time for football season :'() Anyone know of a good discount seller of DLP TV Bulbs? Im kinda tight on cash :)

--Well, last summer when you had asked for suggestions for you new baby's name, Cameron was bandied about by one poster over and over, despite the fact that you told her that you already had a child named Cameron. But she insisted that you name your newborn "Cameron" nonetheless. So, maybe this
is the cause of your being ignored??!! :p

My list is kinda short:

Prison Break -- great season premiere last night, just a riveting show
Monk
Lost
Friday Night Lights

reruns of Sopranos and Gunsmoke (the greatest show ever)

I'm going to give Fringe a try, the previews look good.

And hey, whatever happened to Chuck TV? Last year that was supposed to be the next big thing, on TBS, and I never saw a single episode. Guess it got cancelled pretty quick.

I LOVE Chuck. A wonderfully witty and ditzy show, but primarily a Guy's Show. Pushing Daisies was very cute. Guilty favorite is Amazing Race and I still follow Survivor but not so closely anymore since the wrong people win so much of the time. Lost is starting to irritate me, but this next season, what there is of it, could be very interesting.

Best show over-all is already underway hidden away on AMC - Mad Men. Spectacular show, and getting darker by the week. I have no idea about the new ones coming up.

Other than sports and John Stewart, I'm not a huge TV guy. But I can't seem to peel myself away from Burn Notice (Thursdays on USA Network). The James Bond meets MacGyver plot lines are catchy and really entertaining.

" Mad Men. Spectacular show, and getting darker by the week"

No kidding. Not one single person on that show seems to even like anyone else in the entire universe. Draper seems to be coming to the realization that he can't keep living a lie and the Mrs. is poised to jump on the first offer with a warm pulse. A fascinating trainwreck.

And the cigarettes. It's a wonder lung cancer didn't take that entire generation.

You know, Jim, in the first show of the first season of Mad Men, the client is essentially Liggett & Myers and if I remember correctly John Cullum plays their president. He even has the correct central North Carolina accent for once.

One thing I love about this show is that it's set in the early 1960s. I was 7 in 1960 so I'm absolutely fascinated to see such a nicely done period piece that's so nostalgic to me, princess phones, beer cans you have to open with a can opener (not that I did at 7 years of age, mind you), Danish Modern furniture if you were really cool, and the lot. And I was even eating a bag of UTZ potato chips in the recent episode about them (last week they had a bag on top of Draper's fridge).

The differences in society then and now (and yes, the ever-present haze of cigarette smoke) is striking. The care in which these shows are made is most impressive. (The very end of this past episode has Draper sitting, torn internally, facing the bathroom mirror while refected in another mirror on the door, which matches the earlier ad promotion of two versions of the same woman standing side by side - the "Marilyn Monroe" at work and the "Jackie Kennedy" at home. Draper is also trying to play two different roles, work and home, and he's cracking up.)

TV can be really good if it wants to be. The writers and actors are out there.

Looking forward to Kath & Kim -- haven't found a sitcom to enjoy in a long time.

Disappointed that no one has mentioned Brothers & Sisters. LOVE this show. Wonderful writing, fabulous cast............ and as most of the shows I enjoy probably down the flusher.

Long live Deadliest Catch.

Most sports are my viewing pleasure. Except car stuff -- round and round, round and round, whatever.

But yea I catch Burn Notice when I can--love the narration and Tricia Helfer was in an episode (she's in BSG). My friend works on Mad Men so I'd like to watch it, but I never know when it is on and I haven't caught any reruns which is usually how I watch stuff that's not BSG.

"Disappointed that no one has mentioned Brothers & Sisters. LOVE this show"

My wife and I have the usual Mars-Venus differences in TV watching; sports, Nova, the View. But more often than not we like the same shows. But this is one where we disagree big time. She loves the show, I despise it. I suffered through the first season in the interest of conjugal harmony but gave it up when I realized that I carried not one whit what happened to any of the whiny, self-absorbed narcissists that make up the entire cast list.

Fortunately, we have high-def TVs in opposite ends of the house. Comes in real handy on occasion. :)

I'm coming in really late here but I didn't want to start a new thread.

So, for the past couple weeks I've been watching Burn Notice. Its really good! I don't usually watch network TV but I find myself drawn to USA at 10pm on Thursdays. The acting is good, a little flaky at times, but good. The writing is OK and the storylines are great.

The show reminds me a lot of MacGyver - witty spy finagles his way out of danger with whatever is lying around the room. Its also a fairly wholesome program. The main character is, in a way, the Robin Hood of Miami.

Anyways, just thought I'd share.

I've never seen a single episode of a Joss Whedon tv series, but this one has me intrigued (Although I did love Dr. Horrible, which I think he had a hand in). Its debuts tonight on Fox at 8 or 9pm est. I can't remember which airs first, Dollhouse or the Terminator series (which has been moved to Fridays). I have also heard that Prison Break may be moving to Fridays in order to finish this, its final, season.

I really like Life (NBC Wednesdays) becasue I think the storylines are interesting.

But the big reason is that I think Sarah Shahi (who plays Dani) is H-O-T. Smoking hot. I like that she is rolling in the hay (so to speak) with the Captain (whose character I also like alot and the actor Donal Logue starred in "The Tao of Steve".)

Are you using "The Tao of Steve" to promote Donal Logue? Sorry, I couldn't stand that movie. Something about a kindergarten teacher that's always looking to score pot and rationalize his existence while blowing all his meaningful relationships just doesn't do it for me. I DID love him in Grounded for Life, though. Reminded me a lot of my life. I also liked him in Max Payne, even though the movie wasn't great. He was also in the Patriot, Blade, Jerry Maguire, and Ghost Rider. He was very funny as the priest in Runaway Bride. He is great in Life though, as are Damian Lewis and Adam Arkin. He's 100x better than the original captain, that's for sure!

Did Heroes after the first season "officially" change their target demographic to 13-16 year old girls and boys? I stopped watching it 5 minutes into the first episode of 09'. The only reason I put up with the 3rd season at all was just to see where the writers were going.

I think Claires dad is the only actor on the show besides the Haitian that are any good at all.

Ali Larter should not even be considered a professional actress.

Well, we've been using the DVR to tape Battlestar Galactica to watch with friends @ 9. This conflicts with Dollhouse which several are interested in watching, so we will ALSO be taping Dollhouse and watching after BSG. Helo on BSG is apparently the main guy in Dollhouse. I have been told that the season premier is not as good as the rest of the season is promised to be--I don't know.

Whedon, indeed, had a hand in Dr. Horrible, which I enjoyed, as well as Firefly which I loved. Unlike some of my friends, I don't know anything about Dollhouse, but given Whedon's prowess I'm willing to give it a shot.

We would let people come over at 8 to watch Terminator except that we only watched season 1 and haven't caught up on season 2 episodes yet. So Hulu for them, I guess.

Nevertheless, it's turning out to be a jolly Friday routine, I'm hoping this doesn't end up conflicting with March Madness and that the baby doesn't come until all this wraps up (by this, I mean BSG and March Madness). But I guess that's why we got the DVR in the first place.

As I said in my first post, I wasn't a huge fan of Max Payne, but I thought Logue was good in it. And yes, I definitely liked it better than Tao of Steve. The cast was better, the acting was better, and the action wasn't half bad. It suffered from problems with plot, writing, and directing. Tao was slow, and his mishaps were so obvious you could see them from a mile away. Plus, I had to look at Logue's skin outside of hands and face, which was VERY disturbing, especially since he put on quite a bit of weight for the role. Now THAT'S an !
