I went to Wal-Mart in Greenville this past weekend to get my son a backpack for school. Everyone within a 50 mile radius of Greenville was there, so I parked near the garden center entrance and walked in. Instead of gardening stuff, the garden center was chock full of ECU paraphernalia: backpacks, canopy tents, coolers, notebooks, beads, pencils, flags, hats, umbrellas, trunks, you-name-it in purple and gold.

So, Wal-Mart Shoppers of Durham, I was wondering. . . does the Wal-Mart in Durham have Duke paraphernalia? If so, I'm interested in going there on Saturday before the game to pick up some Duke blue stuff.

Thanks in advance for the info!

When I was in Durham (99-06), it was roughly 3:2:1 ratio for UNC/NCSU/Duke stuff. Word of advice: don't go to that WalMart mid-to-late August. It'll be jam-packed with incoming freshmen buying random crap (I mean necessities) for their dorm room.

Ooooh, good thinking Cathy. I'm seeing my dad before game time, and he lives down the road from wally-world. All my Duke stuff is white, I need to get something blue for game time. (To match my blue-white cat-in-the-hat hat I got last year!)

You're making me nostalgic.

The Target in South Square had some Duke stuff. I hate Walmart, especially the one in New Hope Commons (15/501).

There's also a nice, relatively new SuperTarget behind Southpoint Mall (exit at 751, not Fayetteville Rd). I think they have a bunch of Duke stuff there, too.

Yeah, but Southpoint is so far from campus..I guess not that much farther than Wal-mart. :D You should go to Wal-Mart off of 15/501 just to check out the super intense murals on the wall of NCCU, UNC, NC St, and Duke mascots. They all look evil....I mean, they were professsionally painted for sure. But, yeah, I'd avoid Wal-Mart during move-in. Crazy zoo. Although they do have some Duke gear, but not in the numbers of UNC and NC St. The Duck Shop on 9th Street is much closer and should suit your needs, I'd imagine. Or the generic University Store in the BC. I think you'll have many more choices of Duke blue gear at those two places than Wal-Mart or Target, plus their vicinity to campus makes them more convenient.

You might want to add a stop to Dick's Sporting Goods. They usually have a good selection of team gear for all the Triangle schools.

Well, anyway, coming all the way from Greenville, the extra five minute drive on I-40 past 147 is no big deal.

But if you can make it to the Duck Shop in time (looks like it closes at 5pm on Sat) I agree it is the most convenient and best place to go.

I second the notion that Wally World is far from the best place to buy Duke gear (though I wouldn't hate visiting the G-Vegas location for an ECU item or two). The Duck Shop is good, but if you're going to campus, why not visit the bookstore? Granted, it'll be a zoo on game day, but I've always found the selection and prices at Duke stores to be plenty agreeable.

In addition to the Duck Shop which has better prices than the campus stores, don't forget that the concessions stands will be selling lots of Duke things, too.

Another reason to stay away from 15-501, much of I-40 on the southwest side of Durham, NC 54, etc.: Carolina has their first home football game kicking off at 6P. For as much as two hours prior to game time traffic on roads on that side if Durham are likely to be clogged. Shop the Duck Shop or on campus and avoid the traffic jams.

Exit 270 is my exit, so I'm stuck with it. At least State already played and I don't have to worry about Raliegh traffic.

At least State already played and I don't have to worry about Raliegh traffic.Another way to proceed is to take I-540 (the new "Outer" beltline around Raleigh) to Capital Blvd./Hwy 1. Hwy. 1 to Hwy. 98 in lovely Wake Forest. 98 all the way to Hwy. 70, to I-85 to 15-501 (now a right lane exit) to 751.

No, it's the exit to my dad's house. If I weren't stopping in to see them I'd avoid it like the plague. Might as well go brave the Wal-Mart crowd too, since I'll be right there. Bright side, Total Wine is right there too!

The Target at South Square is also a Super Target. For what that's worth.

Move-in was mostly last week and early this week, so Walmart/Target shouldn't be as bad this weekend.

I am getting a little overwhelmed with the pirate pride myself. My neighbor has an ECU flag on his porch, coupled with a flag of whatever team they're playing that week. He says if ECU looses than he'll burn the VT flag - if they win than he'll save it for next year.

I've never seen so many people get so pumped for what should be a D-II football team. Seriously, the 1992 Peach Bowl was 16 years ago...

Have you been over to Wal Mart yet? It's a purple and gold ECU festival inside there. Talk about sensory overload. . .

Whoa there, tiger. ECU has been to bowl games the last two seasons, beating Boise State in last year's Hawaii Bowl behind an all time, all bowl record of 408 all-purpose yards by RB Chris Johnson (who ran the fastest 40 at this year's combine and went in the first round to the Titans). This year, they are expected to compete for a conference championship. They are trending upward and a legit candidate for 8-10 wins a year. They just re-signed coach Skip Holtz to a 6-year extension. I'm not sure why you think it should be a D-II team, but the talent on the field is far beyond that level. Moreover, if ECU is at D-II level, where does that leave Duke?

Right here (the only Duke-ECU game that matters)

Right...I was at that game, my junior year, in a driving rain. I was sopping wet (and utterly hammered) all night. That was the first football game Duke won during my time there.
Incidentally, I was also at the last Duke-ECU football game, the season opener in 2005, one that Duke really should have won (an obvious clip went uncalled on an ECU kick return for a TD early in the 4th quarter, and we ended up losing by 3).
Having earned a master's degree at ECU, I definitely root for them second after the Blue Devils, and they have put an entertaining and competitive product on the field since I started in Greenville.

And now that you're at Emory, you pull extra hard for the Emory Eagles football team (the men AND the women) on the pitch adjoining the athletic center.;):D

Sure beats rooting for the Atlanta Failcons.

I don't mean to be that guy, but...
Well, yes I do. Your "D-II football team" has just defeated the defending ACC champs at a neutral site.:D

I took Cathy's suggestion and lucked out. They had tons of crapolina stuff to choose from, but only 3 different Duke t-shirts. My stepsons and I each picked one out. And I got one of the student t's they gave away to them also, so nice bonus.
But Walmart was the nightmare I expected it to be. To top it off, the guy who checked us out decided to read each of our shirts, so that tacked on a couple of minutes to hell as well.

They were nice shirts. I didn't make it over to Wal Mart, but I was so happy to see that CB&B and his kids made it over there on Saturday and that they were wearing their new shirts to the game.

How did you get a student T-shirt???

The drunk student next to us had 4 of them and left all 4 on the bleachers. Two kids next to us took 3 and I got one.
