View Full Version : Ringtone--not for adults?

When I first heard this, I thought it was a joke--a ringtone for kids that adults cannot hear. But, with the wonders of the internet, learning anything is possible:

"A tone outside the audible range of hearing for most people over the age of 30. This means that you can get phone calls and receive text messages in class or school without teachers hearing it."

These are pretty amazing. We tested this out with my in-laws (~60) myself and my wife (~30) and her bro and his gf (~24). These things actually work. My father in law couldn't hear any of them. And my bro-in-law's gf could hear the 24 yo ones that I couldn't hear.

Don't bet the farm on these. I am well over 60 and heard all of them quite clearly when I just tested them.

Ugh. I turn 30 in 3 weeks and the only ones I could hear were 'Everyone' and '60 & Younger.' What have I done to my ears?

Maybe it is that wonderful music you youngsters listen to?

I have 2 months until 28, and I can only hear one more of them than BB.

Now that I'm 25 I guess that's why I couldn't hear the 24 & younger one, haha. And I just barely heard the 30 & younger - it sounded like when a TV or monitor is on in the background and you just feel something's slightly amiss...

I heard an initial "click" on some of the 24 & younger, but no tone really.

I played these things on the computer in the playroom while my 11-year-old was playing in the room. He covered his ears with his hands and practically yelled "Turn that DOWN!" Apparently it annoyed him greatly. I couldn't hear squat.

With headphones I can hear up to 12kHz, but no more.

Some stores are using the sounds to chase away loitering teens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito).

Not to compare kids to dogs, but the same thing happened with my 8 year old cocker spaniel. He kept looking at the computer and then glaring at me.

Woot! Turning 27 in October and I can hear 17.4khz and just barely hear 18khz (both 24 and younger). Having played musical instruments for ~23 years (10 of them in marching band), I was worried my hearing would be bad, but this is good I guess :) Probably helps that I haven't been to many concerts - maybe 3? even then, only 1 of them was indoors...

I tested this at work. I'm 38, but couldn't hear the 39 and younger one. My co-worker is 28 and it hurt his ears, he said he could almost feel it in his teeth.

So I've got the hearing of a 50 year old. Great.

I could hear up to the first 24 year old one. I'm 32. My kids and baby could hear them all. I felt a definite painful pressure in my ear with a couple of the ones I couldn't hear. I wonder if teens can hear their parents calling to check up on them when they're leaving the maroon 5 concert?

The last I heard was the 39 year old so I barely beat my age. Suddenly, I feel....very......old.

Which brings up a good point, it may be your speakers, not you, that can't handle the higher frequencies.

This deserves a poll. What's the difference between your 'hearing age' and your real age. Mine is -21, and I'm willing to bet that gives me the dubious distinction of being the most prematurely deaf poster here.

I demand a recount!

This would be a fun website to play with if you have a bunch of younger co-workers. You could drive them batty. Watch them all run around trying to figure out where the hell that sound is coming from. All the older people would look at them wondering if they are on drugs.

I've done this in a single room with people of all ages listening to the same speakers, and people of different ages could hear different tones, very much in line with the ages listed.

HAHA Unfortunately, the office is starting to get over my antics. One of the benefits of being the (ad hoc) system admin is that I know the passwords to all of the computers, so I used to log into them from time to time and make them talk to users. Remember Mitch talking to Kent through his wireless braces?

I got this shirt (http://www.founditemclothing.com/halloween/chris-knight-gorillas.html) last week (in the correct yellow version), so I know exactly what you're talking about.

Wow, that's kind of frightening. I was browsing through the tones to check my hearing and had finally hit one that I could pick up (and oh yeah, I turned 59 last week so I guess I should be glad I can hear at all), when my daughter who's two rooms away and sitting in front of a load television just screamed at me - "What are you doing to make that sound - stop it, please!"

She had heard most of the tones - and knew exactly what I was doing. When I went to ask her what she had heard, she immediately asked if I was playing with those sounds that "old people" can't hear, but kids can.

Yikes!

I have terrible tinnitus, and have had it for years. The "49 and under" frequency gets lost in my tinnitus; it seems it's about the same frequency. I can hear the 12K Hz tone, but nothing higher. I'll be 50 in four months.

(I went to tens of concerts and played in a rock band when I was younger. Now I protect my ears all the time, but back then not so much. But I think some of this stuff is hereditary. Both my mom and my maternal grandmother had tinnitus, too, and neither of them played in a band.)

I'm 27 years old and the only one I couldn't hear was the very last one (22khz). But the two 18 and youngers were easier for me to hear than the 24 and youngers. Not sure what that means.

I guess the years of being a grad student and therefore being too poor to afford an ipod just might have spared my hearing. :-P
