ACC Roundup!

In Sunday ACC action, State beat B.C., 66-54, and Wake Forest took Clemson at home for the 18th straight time, 70-65.  Nothing major from State’s win of note, but in Wake’s, the Deacs held Trevor Booker to just six points and four rebounds.  Pretty impressive!

On To Greensboro!

School Conference Overall
Duke 13-3 26-5
Maryland 13-3 23-7
Florida State 10-6 22-8
Virginia Tech 10-6 23-7
Wake Forest 9-7 19-9
Clemson 9-7 21-9
Georgia Tech 7-9 19-11
Boston College 6-10 15-15
Virginia 5-11 14-15
North Carolina 5-11 16-15
NC State 5-11 16-15
Miami 4-12 18-12

Al-Farouq Aminu broke out of his slump with 18 points and 12 boards.  Best news for Wake might be that CJ Harris had a solid game. They’ll need him for however far they get.

With Wake Forest’s key win over Clemson, the brackets are set for the ACC Tournament, and here they are:

First, the byes go to Duke, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Florida State.

#8 BC takes on #9 Virginia and the winner gets Duke.

#5 Wake Forest gets #12 Miami with the winner playing Virginia Tech.

#7 Georgia Tech plays #10 UNC with the winner playing Maryland.

#6 Clemson gets #11 State with the winner getting Florida State.

Duke and Virginia Tech and the teams they play on Friday are on one side of the bracket; Maryland and their Friday opponent and FSU and theirs are on the other.

We tend to go on a sense of momentum and also listen to our hunches, and have a few factors we always pay attention to at tournament time.  Those are, pretty much:  coaching, guard play, free throw shooting, and experience.  And, of course, injuries.

So while we may change our minds between now and Thursday, as of now, here are some early thoughts.  Keep in mind that we’re mostly talking about the rest of the conference right now.

First of all, if you ever wanted to go and didn’t, this might be the year: with UNC playing so poorly, the traditional demand for tickets by the folks in light blue will be much less.  So more for the rest of us.

Teams we’d look out for: Virginia Tech and Clemson. Both playing well, both very tough. Clemson may have doomed themselves though, since their first game will finish around 11:30 and the turnaround is tough, especially if they go four games in.

First round predictions, first draft anyway: BC, Wake, Tech, and Clemson.

Guys who might go Randolph Childress on you:  Malcolm Delaney, Durand Scott, Reggie Jackson, Greivis Vasquez, Iman Shumpert, Dorenzo Hudson if he’s healthy.
