More On Lawal’s Return To Tech

As we learned Sunday, Georgia Tech’s Gani Lawal has pulled out of the draft after realizing that his skills weren’t up to NBA standards.  Tech is going to be loaded up front, and Iman Shumpert had a solid freshman year.  Jay Bilas says Tech’s main question now is at guard, but if Mfon Udofia can handle the point, they’ll be in great shape.  They also bring back Maurice Miller, and talented freshmen Glen Rice, Jr. (6-4) and Brian Oliver (6-6), no relation to the previous guard at Tech by the same name.  In the frontcourt, they also return Zach Peacock and introduce Kammeon Holsey (6-8), Daniel Miller (6-10), and of course Derrick Favors (6-9), the most highly regarded recruit in the class. Mark Bradley says that Tech will get pressure now, but they had a fair amount last year, and it wasn’t the kind they wanted.

In a related note, Wake is waiting for Jeff Teague’s decision, but the general sentiment is that he’ll stay in.

Florida, as we know, is a different world when it comes to football, so perhaps it comes as no surprise, and smart political calculus, that Attorney General Bill McCollum is picking a fight with the NCAA over Florida State’s football problems.

He’s demanding that the NCAA make public the letter that they sent in response to FSU’s appeal and that failure to do so could result in a $1,000 dollar fine, a year in jail, or both.  If that’s a threat directed towards Brand, it’s not going to go over real well to try and jail a man who is in very ill health.

Here’s the key quote: "In as much as the NCAA has provided the letter in format which the university may only view, but not download or otherwise copy, it appears that the NCAA is therefore acting as the custodian of this record on behalf of the university.  A lack of physical custody of a document does not excuse Florida State University from its obligations under Florida law."

McCallum went on to say that "The records request is therefore all the more important for the people of Florida, who wish to obtain vital information about a university matter in which have invested time, money and a sense of honor."

If McCallum, who is running for governor, really wants to promote Florida State’s honor, he should speak out about the academic fraud at the heart of this case, rather than what he appears to be doing, which is pandering to voters who don’t want to see Saint Bobby lose wins as he duels with Joe Paterno to become the all-time winningest coach.
