J.J Redick is a swell guy. How swell? He knows what Tyler Hansbrough is about to go through, and he’s offering solid advice, even hoping he has a great year and breaks his all-time ACC scoring record.
But no national title. He’s not that swell.

Saturday’s ACC action was limited to the Florida schools, as Miami beat Stetson, 79-65, and FSU got by Cal, 80-77. Former Duke player Jamal Boykin is starting and scored four points and grabbed seven boards.

While we wish the football team had won a couple of more games – and they easily could have – and we obviously wish they had beaten UNC, that doesn’t change the fact that Duke fans should be as proud of this football team as they have ever been of any Duke has had.

The ACC-Big Ten Challenge kicks off on Monday, as Wisconsin visits an erratic but capable Virginia Tech squad. There are five games after that on both Monday and Tuesday, with everyone in the ACC participating except for State, this year’s odd man out.

Next up for Duke is UNC, as the ancient rivalry renews yet again. This year, it should be pretty interesting. UNC was playing incredibly well earlier this year but has fallen off. Duke hasn’t won in awhile but is playing with much more toughness. Thad Lewis is likely to play for Duke, and UNC’s QB situation is in flux. Toss it up!

Duke survived Western Kentucky, but not by much, 59-56, without Jasmine Thomas, who injured her knee earlier in the week. Duke thus moves to 4-1 on the season.

In Saturday’s ACC action, B.C. got past UAB, 83-77, Wake survived UTEP, 82-79, Maryland went down to Gonzaga, 81-59, UVa almost got Syracuse, at Syracuse, losing 73-70, Georgia Tech nipped Jacksonville, 79-76, Clemson smacked Presbyterian, 79-58, and Florida State beat Cincinnati, 58-47.

Virginia Tech bagged an Oak Hill guard, 5-foot-11 Lamont “Mo Mo” Jones, a kid originally from New York, where he attended Rice. Jones is Tech’s fifth recruit.
