In 1977, there were three recruits who stood above all others. Gene Banks went to Duke, of course. Magic Johnson went to Michigan State and then on to immortality. The third guy? Albert King, who went to Maryland. As things turned out, basketball wasn’t his dream, and it was just a means to an end. What did Albert want? To own restaurants.

Joe Alleva is getting started down in bayou country. While a lot of Duke fans aren’t really sorry to see him go, judging by our e-mail, he still gets credit for the Carolina crack in this article.

Former Indiana professor and author Murray Sperber has been a fairly harsh critic of Indiana athletics and particularly basketball (and college sports in general). He is somewhat kinder to IU at this point than we would have expected, frankly.

Frank Dascenzo makes the case for Carlos Boozer as an Olympian. Aside from his skills, he’s somewhat obscure, playing in Utah, and a lot of people may not realize who he is – or how good he is.

Although New Zealand still has to qualify, newly minted Kiwi Nick Horvath will play for his adopted country. If they qualify in Athens, he could come up against Coach K in a wholly unanticipated manner.
