After the Blue Devils annihilated Kentucky in the season opener, a lot of people compared Duke’s freshmen to Michigan’s Fab Five last century (just made you feel old).
Time will tell which class was better but Duke already has one thing going for it that the Fab Five never had.
This article from ESPN talks about how Duke, from Coach K on down, realizes that this could be a special team but that it’s not there yet.
Compare that to the Michigan kids.
After Duke beat them in Ann Arbor and by 20 in the 1992 title game, the Wolverines came to Cameron the next fall talking about how Duke stole “their” championship.
It was a bad mistake because even without Christian Laettner, Duke just stole a third straight game from the loudmouths.
If you read that article, the most critical part is the last paragraph where Zion Williamson says this: “We’re finding our stride, but we still have a lot to improve on if we want to be in that final game and win a championship.”
Any competitive team sport will eventually humble you but the difference between Duke’s kids and the Fab Five is that Duke’s don’t take it for granted and expect to have to earn it.
They aren’t buying into the hype in other words. Unlike the Fab Five, they realize it has to be earned and taken. Nothing will be given to them.
