They just can't get over the hump and after losing to Miami, 75-68, Tech is 12-11 and just 2-8 in conference play.
A lot of people thought that Brian Gregory was going to be canned last year but Tech brought him back.
With a career record of 67-83 and his best players gone after the season is over, both Tech and Gregory are at a crossroad. And you have to think that Tech A.D. Mike Bobinski has his legendary shortlist.
If it's us, our list would have Wichita's Gregg Marshall, Marquette's Steve Wojciechowski, Northwestern's Chris Collins, Providence's Ed Cooley, Utah's Larry Krystkowiak and Dayton's Archie Miller.
Marshall would cost a fortune and Krystkowiak might be happier in the West, just as Bill Self, now at Kansas, prefers the Midwest.
The guy to keep an eye on is Miller.
The former State guard has done a remarkable job at Dayton and there's no question people are going to pursue him. He's an ACC guy though and the conference might be a real temptation. We'll see.
Clemson and Notre Dame have very, very different approaches to basketball.
Clemson likes to take you to the woodshed and punish you. Notre Dame?
It's like George Carlin's baseball, where the great joy is that you Go Home after a lovely day at the park. Sharing the ball! Fast breaks! Three point bombardiers! No guilt!
Something will have to give, and Clemson is never an easy place to play: just last season, when Notre Dame had a wonderful team that nearly eliminated Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, and Clemson finished just 16-15, the Irish won by just 60-58 in Tiger Town.
Notre Dame could do it again, but they'll know they've been to the woodshed either way.
