Penn State's Franklin Claims Maryland As Home Recruiting Turf

Beaver Stadium it ain't. - Rob Carr

You can't treat a future opponent with this little respect unless, well, you hold them in complete disdain.

Maryland, in search of new rivals, may have found one thanks to former Terp assistant James Franklin. Franklin, now the head coach for Penn State, is clearly irritating some folks in College Park.

Check out what he's said about recruiting in the state of Maryland:

"I know there are other schools around here, but you might as well shut them down."

"...[W]e’re going to treat New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, D.C. and northern Virginia as in-state areas for us in terms of the attention that we put on it. You take a six-hour radius of campus, that’s what we’re going to treat as in-state, then we’ll go other places to recruit nationally to do what we have to do to put our roster together. We’re going to approach it as in-state."

Maryland coach Randy Edsall didn't appreciate the comments and said "talk is cheap."

He also said that Maryland and Penn State could be a good rivalry, but it's hard to get fired up when the all-time record is 35-1-1 in Penn State's favor.

On the other hand, Maryland's basketball record vs. Duke is just 63-110, so maybe there's precedent.

Still, seeking a rivalry with a team you've beaten exactly once in your program's history seems kind of desperate.
